Thanks Pete! As a diehard Wheathead, I’m always delighted when my favorite band gets some love. But I agree with you: it would have been better as a live retrospective- after all, Kansas is one of the best live bands ever, and it’s why I treasure Two for the Show. I saw them 8 times in the 70s with the original lineup, and I’ve never seen better shows.
    I appreciate your review Pete!

This just increases that anticipation. Thanks once again, Pete, for these weekly new product review shows. May not order this since rebuilding the whole catalogue of the band but appreciate your review and enthusiasm on the weekly new product episodes.

So I have been throwing around the idea of getting what appears to be a great compilation album from Kansas.. I was sad to see ‘ Lamp light Symphony’ didn’t make it on the list among others as well.. Again great video thank you for taking the time to do this video.

Yeah, I hear you about the final years with Walsh, short concert, the same 10-13 songs. I was actually glad he retired, with Platt, they started doing songs they hadn't done in years/decades, and longer shows too. The band still kills it musically ( Phil Ehart astounds me, in his 70s and still great)

Kansas 1 through Monolith are absolutely necessary in their entirety.
Nice packaging as always. But I'm sure the music is another remaster-disaster victim of the loudness wars. I'll stick with my first Japan CD pressings that sound like the vinyl, only better. Nice to see that some Kansas product is out there to generate some interest with some younger people. Truly classic records, those first 6.

My favorite Kansas song is never on any of their collections: “The Pinnacle.” That tune totally rules! Be that as it may, like most greatest hits/collection packages, there are both good and poor choices here. Hopefully, the inclusion of three tracks from the vastly underrated Somewhere To Elsewhere album, will guide both new and old fans to that slightly unknown release. “Distant Vision,” from that CD, is in my top ten tunes by Kansas. The whole tranquil middle section in this mini-epic, with vocals from the late - and much missed - Robby Steinhardt, is like a manna from heaven, nourishing my soul each time l hear it. Prog, hard rock, boogie, country, acoustic music… Kansas do it all, AND do it very well indeed. Indubitably!
Cheers from Noo Yawk, ova heyah!

Agree with everything you said, but I am responding because earlier today my wife and I were discussing 'Christmas in Connecticut' (1945). In the film, Sydney Greenstreet utters the word "indubitably" twice. "No one says that anymore", said I.
      I was wrong.
Incidentally, Kerry Livgren's solo work is indubitably excellent as well.

The Pinnacle is on quite a few collections such as The Best of Kansas reissue, Playlist: The Very Best, The Ultimate/Essential Kansas, and all the box sets. Although it excludes Myriad and Byzantium, it's good to see that this new collection has a well-chosen selection of tracks from Somewhere to Elsewhere. "Distant Visions" is one of my Kansas favorites too.

@@bookhouseboy280 ~ “Holy wrong track listings, Bookhouse Boy! You’re correct and I’m wrong!!” To err is human and to forgive is divine. I guess even the great ones make mistakes. Bummer, dude. And l have my Sail On boxed set right here, nearby me! Doh! 😣 Darn me and my crazy, hazy, lazy American ways!! Thanks for the heads up.
“On The Other Side” 😉 of things, Somewhere to Elsewhere WAS a fine point on an inimitable career. That is, until Stevie retired and the band reconfigured, rejiggered, and reformed with the truck driver, Tommy Bee & the dude that now split. At any rate, Prelude is cool & Absence may be even better… but l still prefer STE to both of the newer albums. That’s mainly due to the song quality and, of course, Kerry Livgren’s wonderful wordplay and songsmith skills & style. And don’t forget Walsh and the late, great Robby Steinhardt as well. It’s definitely my go to Kansas release from the past thirty plus years.
      Onward and upward!

I'm sure that Phil Ehart had something very specific in mind when he compiled the track list for this set... but I don't know what that specific thing was. It's a really weird selection. Then again, it's Phil's band, and not mine. I already own everything here with the exception of the one re-recorded track. But as you say, not a bad starting point for someone discovering Kansas for the first time.

I'm a Kansas fanatic... but only so many times/ways you can repackage the old catalog and re-sell it... they already did this with "The Greatest Hits" and the CD Anthology back in 1995... adding a re-recorded classic song is "cool", but it is a worm on the hook for the casual fan... that being said, Kansas is one of the best live concert experiences you can get this year... go see them, you will get your tickets money worth and more.

I know that I'm in the minority, but I would have bought it if all the songs were re-recorded with the current lineup. I enjoy those kinds of releases where the current lineups of classic bands re-record their songs. I have such releases from Journey, Foreigner, and Styx. The Styx one(Regeneration) is interesting. For one, Damn Yankees High Enough was redone. Also, Lawrence Gowan used a vintage Hammond B3 organ as one of his keyboards

And I currently own no Kansas discs. But maybe I will pick up that 3-disk set to perhaps see what I've been missing. Comparing the track listings on Discogs it looks like the Europe version has the five Steve Morse era songs House On Fire
Rainmaker/Silhouettes In Disguise/Secret Service/Three Pretenders whereas the US version doesnt - wonder why? - replacing them with just three from Monolith to Drastic Measures- Fight Fire With Fire/Curtain Of Iron/Angels Have Fallen. As you say great intoduction for a new or casual fan, but as I can put it all together bar the new Can I Tell You - and I'm not going to shell out just for that - I think I'll pass.

Overall I liked the set because I don’t have their later CDs, so I liked that you get the best tracks from those releases. I got the US version, and didn’t realize there were 2 versions. What’s with that? I was very puzzled and disappointed my version didn’t have any songs from Power & Spirit of the Age, and it had too many tracks from Drastic Measures & Vinyl Confessions, 2 albums I definitely don’t like. I haven’t heard Power or Spirit of the Age in decades. I was disappointed with Power when it came out, but I wouldn’t mind hearing stuff from it now. I liked Spirit of the Age, and certainly would have like hearing songs from it now. I don’t get this 2 versions thing. They should have 1 version with 2 tracks per album and have every studio album, with a few live things. So now I’ll have to look into getting the other version, which sounds like it’s more the one I want. This is definitely 1 time if I had heard your review before ordering the album I would have saved money.

As another poster mentioned, kind of a weird selection of songs. There are some cool choices here, but other selections just make me think of better songs off those albums. For someone who thinks this is the best of or biggest hits of Kansas, it is neither. No Lonely Wind, no Pinnacle, no Lamplight Symphony. All of Leftoverture could have been included, I actually don't like Magnum Opus that much. A lot of wanking and not enough actual song. Sparks of the Tempest is the worst song off point of Know Return, not as good as Closet Chronicles or Hopelessly Human or Paradox. People of the South Wind and Reason to Be made the charts, not here, as did Got to Rock On., as did Right Away , as did Chasing Shadows ,as did Everybody's My Friend, Perfect Lover, Power, All I Wanted and Stand Beside Me.

Wow... the track list is really poor... they're skipping a lot of really great songs for lesser ones. "Loner" instead of "Got to Rock On," which had actual radio airplay (Audio Visions)? A lot of the other tracks are odd picks as well. Also skipping "Bells of St. James" off of "In the Spirit of Things," when that is by far the most emotionally-impacting non-schmaltzy songs on the album....
