Hey guys! Just wanted to let you know that my new book, Things That Matter, is finally here. I put my heart into it, and I can’t wait to share it with you. You can pick up a copy at www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/676394/things-that-matter-by-joshua-becker/
The tip about donating rather than getting stuck in the "I need to sell this and get some money back" really, REALLY resonates with me. I have donated thousands of dollars of stuff in the past few months in my decluttering journey, but I still have a huge mountain of bags of stuff my brain deemed "too expensive/valuable" to donate. I need to just get rid of it and not look back. With 30 years of near-hoarding possession-collecting, I will never recoup that money, I just need to get rid of it and avoid spending it in the future!
Decluttering is more emotionally draining than I expected it to be. I find watching one or two of your videos in the morning very motivational in keeping the momentum going.
What has helped me at times to further declutter is remembering all the stuff I've gotten rid of over time and not missing any of it. In fact, I have to think pretty hard to remember specific items. No regrets.
Yes! It takes time but it is so worth it. I used to hold on and think 'I'll sell that one day'. The one day never came because I was so stressed from holding onto things and not having a clear space to live and breathe. We donated the lot and we are finally free! The peace that came with that. The time that we now have for one another and what we enjoy. It's priceless. We still have toys for our youngest child but they are things she loves and plays with daily. Plus, I can see this mindset works beyond our tidy home and clearer lifestyle...our son regularly offers things he's enjoyed or used for years but which no longer bring him joy or purpose and asks to donate them! 🙌🏻
I definitely prefer the "low hanging fruit method!" Trying to do it any other way has never worked for me. I've been doing that method for only the last 5 weeks and I'm so encouraged by my progress. Yay!
Great tips! We are donating everything that leaves the house that someone else could use. For us, we really don't want to be tempted to buy more things with that money; we want to learn to live with much less consumerism and more charitable giving. Many thanks for another great video.
I completely agree about the donating tip. Trying to sell items takes time that you could be making more decluttering progress. It also keeps things in your house longer so that your progress is less visible, which I find discouraging.
I am 3 years into decluttering. Things in the beginning I thought I could never let go I am now ready to part with. I so love the feel and the look of being minimal that I actively declutter daily. Even if it’s only a mental process of “ do I still use/ need that” as I go through my days. Best decision I ever made !
Selling items costs you....what I mean is a yard sale takes SO MUCH WORK. Just donate the items or give away. Bless someone else, and you will be blessed!💕
I came home tonight determined to tackle decluttering before I got too tired. I listened once and will repeat a few times. Great motivation and much needed. Thanks for this one today especially!
I like your videos. I decluttered every day for a month. I watch The minimal Mom and Erica Lucas. I watched videos while I decluttered. I got rid of at least half my stuff. I am not done but I have to rest my back for a few days. I got rid of three pieces of furniture and two tables outside on my balcony. I am so happy I decided to do this. Thank you.
I love Erica Lucas’ expression “Minimal-ish!” She has a lotta, lotta stuff in her house still bit her progress has truly been phenomenal! Minimal-ish recognizes both her progress and her knowledge that there’s a long way to go yet. And also - it enables her to get on with her life, without beating herself up over what’s still to be done. Her story is beyond real and relatable to a lot of us!
I loved the donation tip! I was getting so stressed out until watching this video right now, because I could not sold everything I tried to sell... Thank you very much for this tip, I'll be looking for a charity.
1) Clean Sweep: grab a box, walk around your home and put stuff in it 2) Set a deadline 3) Donate more (don't try to sell everything, it adds burden and stress) 4) Ask for help (trust a friend to help you) 5) Leveling : if you're not sure about items, but them in a box and write a date on it. Put the box away. See in a few months if you still need it. 6) Tell a friend (more accountable) 7) Intention is not action.
@@potbellyfatguyfromnewyorkcity That's fine if you're just starting out, but waayyy too late for those of us who've been accumulating stuff for decades. 😛
Yes. Donate or give to friends or leave out for homeless people. I speak from experience trying to get rid of my clothes, mostly new because of addiction to buying 😅😭 and other from family members. I tryed selling online and for almost 1 year still had some left, all that stress one day I decided to just donated or trash it. Now improved and only have the “essentials” . My daughter also learn that it is okay to not hoard items.
Josh, you have hit home with what you just said, I have just moved and unpacking all my "stuff" and I liked the open feeling that was present in the home we were selling when we staged it and now that I'm un packing all my stuff it's just overwhelming and 3 plus trips donating items and I'm still overwhelmed. But I will get there in time and get things cleared in time like you said it takes time. Enjoy your videos, keep up the good work!
Love your videos and advice!! They don’t belittle for struggling to let go or “level” off some items. It’s hard to make decisions and live with them. Thank you 😊 please keep making videos like these. Simple but so helpful to remember it’s a journey not a one-size-fits-all.
Thank you so much Joshua for your wonderful guidance and encouragement. I have felt almost hopeless after years of accumulating things, and a long season of illness. But you have made me feel I can do it...one step at a time.
Thank you for this advice. I have a beautiful clutter free spacious living room that I managed to create after moving to my apartment however all the moving boxes are in my bedroom. I start decluttering and putting things away but I stop every time with certain items because I don't know what to do. The idea of putting them in a box with an expiration date is brilliant. This will give me time to declutter the things that need to go while not having anxiety of wondering what to do with the "keep but has not home" items. Once my bedroom is livable then I can tackle the remaining boxes. I feel my anxiety just went away when I watched your video. Thanks again.
the concept of leveling is brilliant!!! and definitely donation is more rewarding than trying to sell everything. We can talk by experience that donating can really save tons of time )and time is money) and also you can actually help other people by doing that.
I am working on my stuff. Sometimes just one section at a time because otherwise I get overwhelmed and then just stop. Minimalism is not my goal at this time, but definitely something more like manageable-ism.
Sounds like you have a lot of stuff. Try the mins game. Day 1 get rid of / donate / recycle something, Day 2 - 2 things and so on until you reach day 30. Then start again. I did this previously - it worked like a dream. Less is more. Good luck with your journey.
working on things I have kept for many years, thanks for your good advice - wish I had got rid of things gradually through the years.... but I am seeing a light at the end of the tunnel
This couldn't come at a better time! I'm in the uncluttered course and have been doing really well, but thinking of some areas to tackle has me overwhelmed! I need all the help I can get right now!! Thank you!
When we moved from the Oregon coast to eastern Washington we did have a friend who helped my wife get rid of stuff. Wow it really worked. Thanks. We have been downsizing for years. We now live in a 1 bedroom senior apartment.

I really decluttered my desk and drawer after watching your videos, it really makes me feel refreshed and way more easy to work on my desk now. Thanks a lot 💜
A timer helped me aswell, its a kind of deadline. Perfect when you have some minutes during the day. Also love the tip of setting boundaries. I can keep only the things that fit in this bin/ drawer/ box... And I love the 30 day challenge! First day one item, second day 2 things...it counts up till day 30 where I got rid of 30 items at once...You see big changes that kept me motivated! (Sometimes i was so motivated I got rid of things for 7 days at the time...in the end its more challenging, because the number gets higher...) I feel so much peace now Good look!🙏
Yes. I did this one time. I had not finished unpacking from a move two months before and my spare room was full of stuff, and I had company coming. I set me timer and guess what I got the whole thing done that day!
The box is a great method. We use and used NSpire and Hope House for many items. We used to have them come every 2 weeks and then every month and pick up what we did not use. This made it easy to give since it is a charity and they pick it up, time saver. Thank you for this video!
I am still clutterd...but I found out, that If I can THINK of something that can go, its much easier than putting the Item in my hand and make the desicion. But when I made it up in my head before, its much, much easier.
I want to open my front door, toss everything out on the curb and call it a day😟😷😃 (Update) I left several things out on the curb but my next door neighbors are like vultures and they've taken just about everything in sight and I'm not fond of them. Apparently, they like my stuff and I should be happy because it's going fast.😊
I placed an ad after a big clean out....”Everything on Driveway FREE”... all gone within 5 hours except a few tiny random things ... That went straight into trash ( which is where they should have been in the first place.). Was a wonderful experience.
I loved your Power of one video. Reduced my possessions by capping my articles of clothing. Donated most of my clothes. Garage clutter is next. Edit: Love the leveling tip. I’ll have to use that.
I do the clean sweep once a week and it's so easy to do!!❤❤❤ And finally am where I need to be but now I still do this once a month and changing my mindset on how I dont need new things and there will always be something new and pretty out there. Lol
Oh Joshua, I am going to give 'levelling' a try today. I have this thing for my books. My deadline is midnight today. Already feeling motivated that things will move today.
Tip #3 for sure! I've had countless clutter in my garage waiting for me to take pictures of it or waiting for people to pick it up and they bail. I realize not to sweat the little things that could get me 10 or $20 here and there. Even though we are trying to get out of debt and I know that money would be helpful. It just causes me more stress than I feel like it's worth
Thank you for another great video. It keeps me inspired. I especially liked your idea of putting items aside and then coming back to them. Of course, the moment you give something away is when you need it :)

I declutter my home at least once a year. I used to think that I could sell a lot of the stuff, but it takes time and found myself storaging it in boxes until it was sold. I needed it to leave my home so now I'm putting it in my car and deliver it to a cancer charity store in my hometown. Love the fact that my clutter = money for such a good cause 💛
I put loads of stuff into boxes in the attic. When I looked at it after 3 months it was like going shopping but with no spending. So glad to see the stuff again!!! Intention is not action. Sooooo true. I have actually started de cluttering and it is slow but it is happening.
My dad had 3 garages of stuff plus his household. He was living with us so we could take care of him. My daughter and I attempted to start going through stuff but were overwhelmed.
