  • This presentation by Mohammed Zakariya describes the art and technique of Islamic calligraphy. This form of writing was used in both secular and religious manuscripts, which Zakariya explains. He then demonstrates the production process of a single page of a calligraphic album, describing the materials used, their origins, and the various components of text and their meanings.

I wanted to learn this form of calligraphy script since the 80’s. It has always fascinated me.
Ironic the old Islamic avoidance of human/art~but the calligraphy scripting on these books and more as well as Mosques, is totally A R T in every sense and definition of art. ✨
Ps. A true Artist and Craftsman. Absolutely Exquisite! I looked up more videos and websites featuring him and am completely hooked on the art of this gorgeous calligraphy. Outstanding!

For what is the magnesiumcarbonate. Does anyone know?

The paper after being dyed and processed can't hold the ink, the Mg carbonate is used to connect the ink to the paper

Sometimes the paper wont accept the ink, so magnesium carbonate, or baby powder can be used as a substitute, is spread around the paper. This method only works for ahar paper (milled paper specialized for arabic/islamic calligraphy)

It gives you some kind of sense of how historic Arabic medical manuscripts were written
