Whelen WPS-4004 Nuclear Siren Test - Voice, Alert, & Fast Wail - Cedar Rapids (DAEC), IA
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 5 окт 2024
- For the first Wednesday, Mitchell and I started the day off early with one of the Duane Arnold Whelens. The Duane Arnold Plant is decommissioned, however the EPZ is still active, making these technically nuclear sirens. The city of Cedar Rapids intends on keeping the sirens, but only to use them for severe weather. Enjoy!

These used to scare the crap out of me as a kid. I used to live on Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, and every few months or so they would be doing a base exercise. These sirens would constantly go off until 10pm, and they were the worst sounds to me, especially the one with the wavering tone. Now I kinda like them lol.
Lemme guess, those sirens are Cooper HPSAs. They are scary af to non enthusiasts and are common in air bases of Okinawa. Most are used as Tsunami sirens and do alert and voice in 2 languages. I guess the ones at the air base do wail
@@SirensAndAlarmsOfNorthernIL let’s be honest, mostsirens are scary to nunn enthusiasts.
i live on kadena airbase! they turn them on for like 30 seconds every wednesday at 12. they are whelen wps-2905s
Imagine you live in a city that was abandoned for 100 years and you go outside and randomly hear this siren
In reality I don't think this siren unit would be working even if it never tested
The old voice messages the DAEC system used to have were way better. I lost brain cells listening to the voice on this one. Nice vid
Me too lol
That is one hell of an echo there!
Nice and clean.
Unlike the ones near Turkey Point.
Fast wail at 5:51
When I lived there in the mid 90's, I was off and sleeping in on the day they tested that and it was freaky. The talking and then the different tones used.
The ambience sounds amazing
It sounds like a nature documentary lol
I finna make a beat of it

Imagine when doing a test of the siren, and it’s actually needed…
Happened here in Scottsbluff, Nebraska back in March of 2006. A scheduled test was canceled and at 3pm before school was out a real tornado warning was issued.
why they cancel tests during inclement weather.
@@sunnyqzado3455 because people may think a real activation was the test.

They're finally going back to the old voice message haven't heard the new one in two months at least and the number of activations went down to two
Beautiful WPS💛👍🏻🌟😀💯
That is amazing!
The ones here in Homestead, FL next to Turkey Point look almost identical but the voice is more concise and to the point. This one sounds like someone that thinks my English isn’t too good is speaking to me. LOL
that windup tho
Whelens voice messages have always been awful and hard to understand, federal signals is much more clear. Whelen is cheap and just doesn't get it it seems. at least in my honest opinion.
Not necessarily always. Look at the Whelen WPS-2720 in Rosemont, IL. The voice on that one is clear as crystal.

I still prefer the original voice message. glad they still use it
I’ve never heard the whooping noise if whelen 4004 models before
For the last time, ThEaSe ArE nOt nUcLeAr SiReNs, ThEy'rE SeVeRe WeAtThER SirEnS. Older ones like the XT22, Thunderbolt, SD-10, Chrysler etc. were intended as air raid/nuclear sirens, but even those nowadays are used as severe weather sirens.
Well, really they're both, I can't exactly recall the year but sirens were strictly meant to warn the public of an impending nuclear hazard or something, in later years they were used for tornadoes and other life-threatening emergencies.
Judging by the fact that these sirens are in close proximity to a nuclear power plant, I'm guessing these sirens were originally intended to be used in the event of a serious radiation emergency.
Nice Echo
Nice video👍
this one looks fairly new, i bet it doesnt now, this was taken 3 years ago 😂😂
Ah yes I live in CR nothing like waking up to the sound of the sirens on the first Wednesday of the month 😂, I always thought the were ment mainly for severe weather tbh
Also I always thought the sirens rotated and guess I’m right 😂
I never understood why whelens would whoop until it’s able to finally wind up
they activate it 3 times
Some systems, like this one, are activated multiple times to ensure all sirens in the system receive the activation codes.
They send out multiple activation codes for redundancy. Everytime the siren gets a new activation it starts from scratch and starts the cycle from the beginning.

dwoop!
Why does it sound like it was sounding in whoop the beginning of alert?
Yeah, and the fast wail doesn’t want to continue in the start
It’s due to reactivations probably to make sure all the sirens are running
Several identical activation codes were sent out to ensure all sirens in the system activate. With how Whelen sirens work, if one has activated for an activation code and another one is received, it stops what it’s doing and starts a new cycle. This also applies to identical activation codes, where it simply “restarts” its cycle.
Hi can anyone tell me why the announcer reads the script in a choppy way?
i think it's because of the echo
