6th Intervals - Diatonic 5th up to 3rd - All The Things You Are

  • This is a great method to work on the chords to any song in a simple yet challenging way.

    This triadic concept just uses a diatonic 6th ascending or descending between the 3rd and the 5th of each chord. The interval of a 6th is one of the most lyrical intervals both interesting and easy to hear. This exercise is deceptively difficult for most of my saxophone students although my piano students seem to have no trouble with it possibly in part due to the visual nature of the instrument.
    Here I demonstrate the concept over All The Things You Are although it works over any song. After comfort with the interval is reached you can vary the rhythms of the melody or start and end phrases with it.
