Both made similar statements in an _Ebony_ magazine article a year prior to his dismissal. It's also one of the reasons why Jimmie Walker never got along with his on-screen parents. He didn't even attend Esther Rolle's funeral years ago. Esther Rolle came back for this (final) season only to have written off Carl (an atheist), a higher salary and make JJ more of a responsible character than in the past.
@@DavidRichardson95 thanks for the info, I saw an interview with Esther, she said that she didn't like the fact that Jimmie's on-screen character was always portrayed as the village clown, I think she used to be an activist. It's a shame that they never reconciled their differences.
@@ejima74 I guess John and Esther considered themselves to be more seasoned and serious actors while Jimmie had gained fame in stand up comedy. Walker has stated that the Good Times cast was nothing like other tv family sit com casts, where the actors said they genuinely felt like a real family. Walker didn’t really seem to like anybody on the set and said it was a shame that they interacted that way. Although Amos and Rolle may have hated the antics of JJ, it’s no doubt that he was the primary reason the show was such a huge hit and why audiences tuned in. Obviously there was resentment, but he had some of the great 70s tv catchphrases!

Then J.J. caused Keith to suffer a knee injury which derailed his football career, and then he became stuck in that apartment. The last show was about him getting a chance to tryout with the Bears, but I'm not too sure if it mentioned him making the team.
But she was hesitant. Made me wonder if she really wanted to leave ghetto life. Willona turned down a marriage proposal, that could have been her ticket out too. I know it's a tv show but that one always had me 🤔

Then J.J. caused Keith to suffer a knee injury which derailed his football career, and then he became stuck in that apartment. The last show was about him getting a chance to tryout with the Bears, but I'm not too sure if it mentioned him making the team.
