Both made similar statements in an _Ebony_ magazine article a year prior to his dismissal. It's also one of the reasons why Jimmie Walker never got along with his on-screen parents. He didn't even attend Esther Rolle's funeral years ago. Esther Rolle came back for this (final) season only to have written off Carl (an atheist), a higher salary and make JJ more of a responsible character than in the past.

Walker has stated that the Good Times cast was nothing like other tv family sit com casts, where the actors said they genuinely felt like a real family. Walker didn’t really seem to like anybody on the set and said it was a shame that they interacted that way. Although Amos and Rolle may have hated the antics of JJ, it’s no doubt that he was the primary reason the show was such a huge hit and why audiences tuned in. Obviously there was resentment, but he had some of the great 70s tv catchphrases!
