*Warning: Very Loud Audio* Penn & Teller - Don't Try This at Home (1990)

- Thought I'd already uploaded this; guess I hadn't.
1990 Penn & Teller special that I first saw on public access (WGBH channel 2, to be precise). Not too sure where it originally came from.
Relatively obscure, even for one of their older works. It wasn't even listed on their Wikipedia, last I checked (11/01/12) [While that was true at the time, it has since been added].
Again, most of the gags are repeats/repeated later, but it does contain the first video appearance of the 'Invisible Box Trick', and it's worth watching because P&T are awesome.
This video was originally uploaded while RUclips was experiencing a service drop, so the 'Description' section was nonsensical gibberish at first.
Oh, wait, it still is. Развлечения
The reason they did this was, back in the 90s magicians kept doing the same old magic tricks over and over again, never coming up with anything original. They decided that if they revealed the secrets behind the tricks it would force magicians to come up with new ones.
@Show100prd Penn Jillette was friends with the masked magician(Valentino), but there's actually many of them, like 'anonymous'. They are a 'club' to demystify magic so people appreciate it for what it is, illusions, and to revitalize the art by encouraging the ingenuity of the next generation. It is the whole reason for their TV show fool us.
Sometimes knowing how the trick is done leads to the trick being more impressive than if you didn't know at all.
@Show100prd Chill dude. What is wrong with you?
I had no idea what you did or didn't know. All you said was one line... The you lecture ME about how it is rude to lecture. Fuck yourself dude.
Richard Smith idk who your taking to man ahah ....nah but I’m sure you scared him away show100prd u a pansy!!!
A true FORCE. If ya know what I mean.
@@rich1051414 They were probably a troll since I see they either deleted their account or comments
I loved the fact that Penn had to really lift his lanky legs and teller had to have someone stop his tiny body on the Zipline xD
He's 5'9
He's not that short lol
@@jrcumzxd Penn that is 2 meters high hahah
@@RafaAlemm seriously lol, anyone that stands next to him looks short if he isn't a NBA player
jrcumzxd Lmao Yup he’s a big fella, Teller is actually a normal average size for a man! But when they did the “Shaq and Teller” VS. Penn show, Shaq made him look “normal” for once and made Teller look bite size! Bahahahaha 🤣
Penn is 6’6
Teller had slowed down a lot, and that's understandable. But seeing him not using the fake legs in the first trick, and being on a trapeze catching things from a bear trap is just crazy.
Yeah he sure was a little more spry 26 years ago.
He's so good!!!
Yeah but for a guy in his 70s I'd say it's not bad
He still catches things from the bear trap also they just updated liftoff to love to make it easier on both of them
Teller is perfect. I love how he uses facial expressions to add to all their shows. It wouldn't be the same without him.
@Chris P Bacon nope. It would just be P. 😂😂😂
Is nobody going to bring up the fact Teller made a ham and cheese sandwich with peanut butter? That's the most shocking part of the routine!
and he still does that :3
Are you sure it was peanut butter? It could have been a jar of mustard, which would make far more sense.
@@loganfisher3138 That... that was pretty clearly peanut butter... idk what kinda mustard you're eating :s
@@toddtrisdale1850 I agree that it definitely looks more like peanut butter, but the video quality isn't very good, mustard would make far more sense for this sandwich, and there are certainly some dark and thick jarred mustards out there.
It's peanut butter, I've seen multiple versions of them doing that routine, it's actually not a bad combo, same concept as cheese crackers with peanut butter, not sure how the extra stuff would be with it,. Google it. Grilled cheese & peanut butter.
Most of this is magic.
The bee act?
That takes balls.
fake bees
Bees are non aggressive unlike wasps. They probably got stung once or twice each.
Still fake bees.

@@DJBaffler
A stinglesa bee is still a bee.
not really
That blast off song is a treat everytime

Bets you didn't watch it only once ?
I just love the fact that they brought 900 thumb tips and hankies to this show...what a gift!
😱
They could have swapped out Victoria for a log in a blue dress and a blonde wig and no one would notice the difference.
AnOtherChoosenOne She's absolutely crazy now. She ran for a commissioner seat in my county.
AnOtherChoosenOne what makes you think they didn't? :U
+AnOtherChoosenOne I'd notice, it wouldn't be as loud and annoying.
+AnOtherChoosenOne
Margaret Lanterman would notice!
I'd have still hit it.
I feel like the whole fire eating sexual euphemism thing kind of flew over the audiences head. Nobody reacted to his fire going out and her having to re-light it. Got a chuckle from me at least.
Like when they laid down all slouched on the couch? C'mon!
I don't get it. Could you (or anyone reading this) explain?
@@markd2797 The act is a funny sexual/romantic metaphor/play. Penn serves them "drinks", they look at each other lovingly as he goes down on a stick of Fire, then hands her her own. 19:34 they're both lit up together, and they start getting closer and closer. 19:52 she swallows the fire, seductively, and they both lay back on the couch, "tired". Then they go again, and even lick lips at each other. This is the funny part, at 20:34, his flame goes out, but hers doesn't, indicating Penn is done at this point, but she's still up for more, so she relights his fire forcefully. And again! After that it's pretty much setting up for the final cigarette trick, which specially during the 90s, "a cigarette after sex" was very popular imagery. And so the act/trick is complete :)
@@GarudaPSN Thank you so so much for the detailed explanation. I hope you're doing well during this period of quarantine.
@@markd2797 Sure thing! that's what got me on a Penn n Teller spree xD
I tried this trick at home and killed 14 people
That's hell of a big family you have got sir.
Had*
Just 14? Whatever girl.
You haven't read the title of the show, did ya? Rooky mistake
the marshmallows one?
*Rooky* mistake huh....
Teller used to teach high school. His students probably had no idea how lucky they were.
You can tell he was a teacher, he looks like he was born old.
His students are probably dead by now
@@BonelessBBQnugs Wow! Grab a flashlight, kids; we're going to some dark places today....

Oh my god a whole audience of 900 is doing a trick like it's the most inane thing ever and I'm sitting here dumbfounded. What is happening.
Willem Maas fake thumb tip
Willem Maas tissue stuffed in plastic thumb cover
it's harder to see with the low quality of the video footage of that time. They did the same thing in fool us and you can clearly see the fake plastic thumb on most of the audience.
It’s not fake because he never puts thumb in whole to put on and off
VelyMania Yes you're wrong
the first 4 years of the 90s were basically the 80s
agreed
First three years of the 2000s were basically the 90s DLC expansion pack.
Wow isn't it crazy that cultures don't just magically transform on cue as we enter the next decade.
The last twenty years were still basically the back end of the nineties
@@thetman0068 meanwhile the 2010's started pretty much in 2011
Lmao when they just started destroying the tables

@@TheMartinbomber watch the video. It is in the opening, do you have ADHD or something.
@@theblackbaron4119 yes I have A Dick that Hangs Down
Could that lady be any worse of an actor? Holy fuck.
I wonder if they set any kinda record for most people doing the same magic trick at once with that opening. lol
I watched this back in the early 90s one night that I stayed around my nan and gramp's house. I can still remember the night vividly and makes me miss my nan dearly. Rest easy nan. It's also the night I became hooked on P&T :P
Since posting this my gramp died too, pretty shitty year but still happy memories of perfect evenings at the grandparent's house :)
Gamer Nick I’m really sorry to hear that. My condolences. Did they watch it with you?
I've watched many Penn videos but Teller is just phenomenal he makes the show with no words. This guy would dominate silent movies and still feel ready to take on more
Fucking epic entrance with the mirrors and zip lines. That should be their entrance on every episode of Fool Us. But, they are probably too damn old for the zip lines now.

this shit is so good man. i love penn and teller.
its hard to believe this is almost 30 years old.
Almost.
One year left bud.
Say again?
2020!
We did it boys!!!
I love that the entire fire eating bit was... I can't think of a word or phrase... A visual euphemism? Ah whatever, they were fucking.
+logandh2 Yep.
+logandh2
The funny thing is that Teller talked on his blog about Penn teaching him fire eating, and doing this exact routine together.
yeah its a little too much lol
yeah its a little too much lol
It was porn
I'm not usually into magic shows, but I absolutely love these guys. They know how to put on an entertaining performance.
I was at the filming of the truck running over Teller and the most shocking part of the the night was Teller speaking during the setup. I have seen him speak since then but at the time I wasn’t sure he could speak.
the truck was pretty easy ... if you look when they do the shot from the back look at the middle of the tires at the rear ... there i no gap ... yet the otherside has a gap ... the tires on the truck that were to run over Teller were arctic soft tread tires ... designed to NOT CRUSH stuff under them but support heavy loads ... that is why no gap .. the weight is dispersed more broadly thus reducing the weight on teller ... all he had to do was inhale and keep his chest puffed out ...
1:45 You can hear some clapping, someone noticed.
Penn gives an intense WWE promo to his rivals
That introfuction with glass shattering was really neat. I loved it!
hmm at 19:19 the glass is half full but then magically becomes full again. They really are good magicians!
No, they're optimists.
No shit! ;)
Eddie Marz NICE
Eddie Marz was a shit part to the show as well i thought. was boring and in no way interesting.
Eddie Marz I was in no way looking at the glasses.
The moment they showed the truck I thought “fake tire”, great show I’m just really proud that I knew that right away, I wonder if anyone was fooled?
Did he just really draw out the same trick for ten minutes with a beautiful woman
it's more of a perfomance rather than a trick
Yup
Actually a brilliant scene
Love Teller. He so the best
Anybody else spot the guy in a white shirt and tie tasting tellers fake blood at 16:25?
I would give anything to see these guys live.
They don't seem to come to the UK often though.
@Chris P Bacon this is what happens when they give a theater your name
that fire model thougg
apparently she got a tumor, became a hunch back and gained 70 pounds which forced her to quit modeling and she went on to start a successful pet product company. i looked her up though and found a 2 year old interview and she still looked pretty fine in it. carol perkins
Also, seeing their animal trap routine evolve over the last decade or two is truly an inspiration to any future magicians. If you find something that creates surprise, suspense and applause, you've got something unique, and that'll give you motivation to keep it that way
What a cool find! *I love Penn & Teller!!* I've seen lots of their shows but I've never seen this episode before. Brings me back to my childhood, growing up in the good ol' 1990s, when this type of entertainment still existed, and when cable TV was still good. Haha!
35:24
The 1990's summed up in 2 names
Wonderful. Fire eating scene was beautiful, almost moved me to tears.
I was also impressed, with few elements, the set, music and choregraphy create a very powerful atmosphere
Gave me a boner
thank you SO much for uploading this. this was my introduction to P&T, which my mom showed me when i was young.
TMA2
You're welcome!
wow... they gave a great door gift right at the beginning and taught the how to do it!
15:45 - OH NO NOT THE MARSHMALLOWS NOT THE MARSHMALLOWS OOOOOOH THEY'RE IN MY EYES OOOOHHH AAWWWALWH
I regret wearing earphones
That bee act really brought up my anxiety levels jesus christ.
Yeah seriously. Why bees?!
Squishosaurus nothing wrong with bees. They’re soft little angels
The 90's, when television events were worth watching
I'm from Chile and here we have never heard of this duo... Right now i'm on a marathoning every Penn & Teller I find here in youtube.
These guys are amazing! Their shows are timeless! But somehow I feel bad for being 25 years late for the show
the myth busters of the 90's
I miss the 90s.
I couldn't watch this in the 90s. Bum ass internet.
This first trick is the one I most vividly remember from my childhood and I've only seen it once. Been trying to find it online for years with no luck so thanks for uploading this
They did it on an episode of Muppets Tonight. It was one of the later episodes that aired on Disney Channel after ABC cancelled it
Thanks for the upload, this is great!
+Cole Trickle
Glad I could provide! Thanks for checking it out!
Now that's what I call a hot date.
immediately guessed the Truck trick. I was a little surprised when they had 3 instead of only 1 tier running over him though.
This is one of my favorite show. I watch this so much I think I have everything memorized.
I've watched this video 25 years after it was made and still I saw stuff I've never seen before in my life. I'm totally amazed. And I consider myself a big fan of magicians and illusionists. Penn and Teller are geniuses.
Wait a minute. I'm in love with Jane. She's always so cool. I forgot how much she kicks ass. Cleanest lobes in the biz.
Man I love these guys... that scene with Penn and the lovely woman doing the fire stuff, just so good.
ive watched this a few times in my lifetime.. i keep watching it again and again because its a good show
this was awesome. UPLOAD MORE!!! Penn and Teller are one of the best acts ever!
Teller so cute
This is what got me hooked on Penn & Teller
I remember watching this is a child and was fascinated by these two.
Especially where Teller produces the bees etc.
I would give anything to see them live.
Somehow Teller reminds me a lot of Art Garfunkel
It's the fivehead.
I’ve always thought that!
It's probably his hair, I've been thinking about this a lot as well.
Gotta be the same person.
I always thought he reminded me of Paul Simon, and Penn of Art. Simply because of the height similarities :p
Teller: *throws a truck on a table* Oh shit, this one's styrofoam. *scratches head* *waits a little* *turns around and leaves*
It's crazy to think that there are people who were in that audience that are dead now
I remember seeing this when it came out... Loved it then, and I still do.
Coming back to this after lift off got retired. Always gonna be my favorite trick.
sFor those wondering, it was first on NBC. Hence Victoria Jackson.
Teller looks so young
i remember watching this years ago and was completly blown away by penn and teller and the next couple years of their magic
This is soooo 90s, thank you lord for this bounty.
Spoiler alert: Teller survives.
Oh good, I was wondering how they would get three seasons of a TV special out of a corpse for the CW.
Wow, thanks for ruining it, dick
P.s. calm down it’s a joke
Why is nobody talking about the million bees act? The monologue is comedic and so is the performance.
Ok the fire breathing act was finally an example of Penn’s carnie training in action, that I haven’t seen before. Excellent.
Im just watching these old shows bc of the quarantine
That was the hottest magic trick I've ever seen.
Many thanks for this upload! Nice to see how they did some of these acts all the way back in 1990. I saw them 7 years or so ago in Vegas and they are great performers, lots of interesting gimmicks too that intrigue the nosy observer from the moment you see the stage.
The tune they play during the bodyparts in boxes act though, it get's annoying after two minutes, let alone decades of shows. Give some young talent a chance and make something better :P
Great show, thanks for uploading it.
Very high quality, thanks!
YEAH!!!!$€$€$£$€$£$#$$£€£•€?
wow 1990 I feel old, I mean really old....
meh i was close with the truck. i was thinking soft tires.
this is great! thanks for the upload
still doing the same sets today and they're only better now. Those guys are geniuses.
So, after watching this I can't help but think if they were to do this special today it would be more or less exactly the same, on a somewhat larger budget, but there's no way in hell Victoria Jackson would have been there. For a multitude of reasons. That'd be the only real difference.
That's very likely true. Their more recent incarnation of Lift Off/Rip Off shows that it has been upgraded in budget.
I actually think that this special has the best version performed of
Lift-Off/rip-off because Penn is more in sync with the music, all the other performances of this trick, that I've seen, doesn't seem like it's performed as well, It seems a bit rushed
the doors - moonlight drive, comes to my head at 16:50
MarathonInfinityHalo YES! Was also thinking Erik Satie.
Holy crap this was 23 years ago..... I feel old now.
dude, i love you. i wasn't able to find this ANYWHERE for a time. I have vague memories of watching it as a wee lad (given its date, I must've been at least 4-5 y/o) after my mother recorded it for me when it had originally aired on TV, minus the erotic fire eating, which was understandable parental guidance on her part. you've provided me with media to potentially stimulate submerged memories and relive a tiny piece of my youth. i cannot possibly thank you enough sir.
19:20 I think they did a cut here cause the fluid in the left glass is completely different when they change cameras. Bugs me
+David Richmond it's possible the tray was rotated so the fuller glassed switched places with the other
+AbbsJr without a camera cut
+David Richmond
I see that too. That is strange. It is full when they switch back as well. I wonder if they did a composite cut from another nights performance or filmed before the show and dubbed in the audience applause.
Nuckelhedd Jones someone else commented it’s a different clip from like 18:59 - 19:19 roughly. You can tell also by the curtain change right behind him. That pink curtain is folded out at the edge during the clip and then it goes straight
So... Many... Effing... BEES!!!! D:
That fireshow was just amazingly beautiful. It told a story. Fantastic!
Teller looked so confident spreading his legs out in front of the tire like that. Shit I wouldn’t do that even if I was assured I’d be safe too.
Holy shit its been almost 25 years!!
And These's kick ass motherfuckers haven't aged a bit!!
AWESOME!!! :D
Penn did gain a little weight though
lmao
Bart Eikens
Hahaha!
He is starting to lose some again, at least at the time of this comment.
Everyone sees it differently I guess. I was actually thinking how much younger they look! Sorry to be disagreeable!
Doug Hi we all age
To everyone complaining about the magic , just enjoy the show its not just magic it’s also genius comedy
I remember this the first time round, a great show, I used to watch it every week
Man... the 90s was a weird decade
I bet they did the truck trick with flex tape
No
6:24 Matt Damon, before he was famous ;)
The music is supremely 90s sounding. The nostalgia is unreal.
If you watch the blast off trick now you can see just how much they keep improving their tricks
