    To your information, you have to set the Superscale to 2X (2x2) for HD to UHD, not 4x. The 3X is for 6K and the 4 x is for 8K.

    Studio 17 paid version. I admit I have been changing my timeline to 4k without doing the upscale. I can see my clips are larger by 25% when I select 2X so we shall see if my end product looks better and functions the same. That said, I also convert the clip to HDR and make edits post with green screen, sizing, fx, etc. Hoping it sill lets me do all that with this so I can improve my content. Thanks for the tip.

    Actually I think you need to choose 2x
    1080p footage is basically 2K. You want to change it to 4K, you double it (I know it's a bit confusing because you think it's 4x as many pixels, but in resolve I believe it's 2x =4k, 3x=6k, 4x=8k)

    Still useful! :) The reason why 4x doubles the output (and not 2x) is if you double the X and Y resolution the output image becomes 4 times larger. Some apps would still call that 2x though, but Resolve chose the more technically correct label. Thanks!

    I think this is insane I will check it out. I think for a person like me with three Sony cameras (1)A7III and (2) A7SII it's perfect because in wedding videography you can't shoot in 60fps without making a decision on Framerate or quality. If you shoot everything in 24fps you can't slow the footage down but it's better quality and going 1080p allows 60fps or even 120fps for cinematic footage but downgrade the quality. I think as filmakers / content creators we grade our quality harder than the client ever will.

    Thanks, I've got about 2 hours to learn how to upscale but I've made a HUGE mess of this project I've been working on. Total amateur videographer & editor here - just trying to capture better video for my music & synths channel.
    Thing is, I shot my newest ambient music video on a wide range of stuff - from Blackmagic 6k RAW to 1080p cell phone footage and stills... and I've been such an idiot about Renders in Place, project & timeline settings... everything... it's just a huge mess. Add to the mix the insane frustration of Da Vinci Resolve crashing over and over (despite my insanely specced-out workstation) and I just want to be DONE with this project. I'll never made a video this complicated again... it's keeping me from focusing on the music.
    Only thing is, I feel so annoyed about putting in the investment to getting 80% of my footage in 4k to 6k RAW and it seems stupid to only render the finished product in 1080p.
    Eventually I just kind of compromised and I think I'll render the 1080p then upscale it to 4k using your method. This feels like a pretty stupid workflow, but I'm out of patience for this project. If it looks "good enough" at the upscale, then I'm gonna go with it. Otherwise a solid 1080p version is my fallback. Thanks for the tips, I think it will work for me!

    Thank you Eric for this insightful tutorial. Question though, with programs like these that are able to make your 1080p footage look like 4K, do you think this could substitute shooting everything in 4K? What are the benefits to shooting in 4K versus shooting in 1080p, up scaling your footage, and then sharpening it in AI programs? I’m deciding right now between buying a camera that shoots 4K120p versus saving money and buying a cheaper camera that’s able to shoot 1080p at 120 fps. This video is very helpful.

    • @travel9to5
      @travel9to5  2 года назад +8

      What I do: I shoot 4k, then edit on a 1080p timeline. Allows you to crop in if needed and rearrange… then upscale for output.. so in short: def buy a 4k camera, it’s the future

    • @Solaris501
      @Solaris501 2 года назад +4

      Kind of naive to think this is a substitute to a 4k camera. It’s like asking why shoot slow motion when you can just slow down in post? Software And fixing in post ALWAYS has limitations.

    • @peepo19
      @peepo19 2 года назад +6

      @@arielhernandez6560 Actually a good question. If you shoot in 1080p and upscale you're using an AI algorithm to fill in the pixels, the detail is just "guessed" by some sophisticated algorithm. It might look convincing for some scenes but it is not real detail, it will make the video look cheap overall. That being said AI is getting better at faking it, but it's always more valuable to have real detail. If you can afford it AND need 4K (there are many applications where a good 1080p looks better than 4k with bad HDR) then go for it. Otherwise there is some very good value in good 1080p cameras (for example the BMPCC original you can find second hand).

    • @travel9to5
      @travel9to5  Год назад +1

      1920 divided by 750 is ca 2.5 and 1080 by 576 ca 2. So try 2x and above 2x to see what looks better

    What if I want wo use 4k footage applying >2x zooming in a 4k timeline? Do I have to export in 8k and reimport? Or how do I make sure the superscale version will be used?

    • @travel9to5
      @travel9to5  11 месяцев назад +1

      You need to set the timeline to 8k

  • @Triro
    @Triro 8 месяцев назад +1

    Honestly, not really needed if you're just scaling your video to 2k from 1080p.
    As its way more time, for less of a result. scaling from 2k to 1080p is kinda unnoticeable. So I'd say a AI is useless, though 1080p -> 4k might have a greater difference sense the pixel count is way more.

    LOL the render time will annihilate my computer? This is NOTHING compared to what I do when using Owl3D to render normal movies into 3D ones. Yes, I'm gate-keeping but on average it takes 14 hours of frame interpolation followed by 2 days of 3D conversion FOR A SINGLE MOVIE, using an i9 13900KF and an RTX 3080. 8 hours is a piece of cake.
    Thank you though, great video, especially since the (misleading) tutorial I watched before this stated that all you had to do was change the timeline resolution to 4K and then click "quick export".
