- Yes, that Chip Ganassi. Car #10, can't recall where he started or finished. Many other more familiar names from the Kingdom of Kent as it was expressed here (on slicks, of course!) in the US. In 1980, guys like Dave Weitzenhof and Bob Lobenberg were certainly more familiar to the fans than Chip was. ;)
Dave Weitzenhof is a legendary SCCA driver. He's won 7 national championships. A great driver, engineer and car builder and also an all around nice guy.
Chip Ganassi behind the wheel, David Hobbes behind the microphone. Legendary.
+Nicholas Peters , Thanks! I have to admit, these 1980 Runoffs vids are my favorite. I found the original masters back when I worked for Turner back in '91, and dubbed them to VHS. Funny thing..I only started the channel to "file host" those videos for a buddy of mine's Facebook group dedicated to pre-chicane Road Atlanta. Someone saw this one and posted up at Jalopnik. I came home one night and discovered the damn thing had a thousand views. It was a real WTF moment! Logged on to FB later on, someone at Grassroots Motorsports Magazine had seen the FF race on J'lop, and found my Showroom Stock A video while looking around to see what else I had. They posted *that* one up over on FB. I went to check YT again..500 views. And people had started subscribing! I just started uploading really random stuff, and folks loved it. The internet is a funny place.. :D
@@oldsccaguyyah9901 I think I was at that race. Ganassi has come a long way since then.
wow awesome race thanks
I remember these days with FFs and the Runoffs at Road Atlanta. Lots of familiar names in the field, and I’ll never forget the red clay getting on everything! Thanks for posting.
Found this video while trying to find Senna's formula four or ford races. Did not hear or read anywhere what's the track but did race road atlanta in skipbarber on iRacing about 15 years ago and only the second last corner is of what i was racing. Was 3 tents of from world record lap and in a race, my internet connection cut me out while on lead from pole and "never" raced again online.
David Hobbscap, my fave! That's awesome that he called amateur races. This validates everything I've done with his commentary.
Wicked video!! Thx for the upload!! I wasn't even born in 1980, but those were some crazy races back in the day!
Raced karts against Dave Knapp in the mid seventies. He was fast in karts as well.
Great stuff! Interesting that they allowed a huge obvious spoiler, replete with winglets and Gurney flap, on Lobenberg's car. Like duh, yes, 1980, that's aero.
Fuck me, Ganassi nearly decapitated himself on that ambulance @ 28.30
AWESOME race! Thanks for uploading!
Can't find the full results of this race anywhere on the SCCA website. Do you have them? Thanks for posting. Excellent stuff.
Was pitting with Merlin in 1980 could not make the Atlanta. Just seeing for first time . Fantastic Currently Photographing VSCDA AND this season SVRA..... CHAUNCEY MORAN
If you have any of the 82-84 CSR or 81-85 SuperVee races PLEASE post them! I've never seen any of my Dad's runoff wins.
Holy crap, I guess I just wasn't paying attention. Chip got the bronze? I wonder if it hangs in the trophy case next to all the CART & NASCAR stuff.
Mike, I can't find complete results. The website's laid out a little weird, seems just to have recorded which drivers have won National hardware, and you have to know a driver's name to see if they've won one. Not the best research tool in the world (especially when you see a car you remember and say, "That's..uh...WHATSHISNAME!!!"), but at least something's out there. I don't really blame the club..it's tough to archive stuff when there's something like 70yrs of it. :D
That ADF...years later it or one of its kin was still showing up at Cal Club events and running up front.
I found a promo vid " 1980 SCCA Runoffs " on the channel " bakersugar "
Great racing ... but I can't believe no yellow was called, and then they had to pass the ambulance at full song! (28:20 into video)
John, that's just how it was done back in the day. It's done differently now.
And the camera stayed on the race!!! Love it.
Gawin Grimm , that's the reason I love raw footage when I can find it.

Drank a loooot of beer there.
That sounds dangerous lol. That really steep road that connects the turn 5 spectator area to the front of the track along the esses is scary enough to walk sober
@@QuattroZack1 We liked to sit up at turn 5. Ine day it rained and we had a fun time getting out. It's a lot nicer now, and the pits have been changed.

Interesting, iconic movie! I subscribed your channel Cheers, Fabrizio
