My Attempt at Bark Grafting - Building Better Apple Trees | Dream Farm w/ Bill Winke

  • Bark grafting is the method by which you attach a cutting from a tree you really like to an established apple tree that produces less desirable fruit. I am far from the expert on this, but I have hundreds (maybe thousands) of wild trees on which to experiment. I use this method to graft commercially grown apple tree cuttings (called scion wood) from Enterprise, Gold Rush, Honey Crisp, Fuji, Arkansas Black and Hawkeye varieties to my wild apple trees. The goal is to create trees that produce better tasting apples for human consumption. The deer seem very satisfied eating the wild apples, so it is more about adapting some of these many trees for our use. I believe I have converted about 20 trees so far. I will know soon enough whether this worked. Maybe I will be selling apples some day!

    It works, my dad was a professional at this, we would get two or three different types of fruits on the same tree and he did it to all of our trees. You did everything the right way.

      That's the way we looked at it. The scion wood is pretty cheap, all things considered. And we have maybe thousands of these little wild trees, so it might end up being a really cool thing if we can get it figured out. Thanks for the comment.

    Grandpa used some kind of, "grafting tar" his words. I wish I hadn't have been such a dumb kid. I could have paid attention and learn these things from someone who, in my eyes was an expert. He would graft two or three inch long pieces with one bud. And if my memory serves he was always successful. Fun video thank you

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  3 месяца назад

      Yes for sure. My method has evolved a bit from that first tree. I have done maybe 30 trees now and I use the electric tape to firmly hold the graft together and then spray the sealer on it. That seems to produce a very tight, clean bond with less time. I will know in a few weeks (when the sap really starts flowing) if this works.

    Nice work Bill. This should work. It looks like the bark was slipping when you cut the inlays (a good thing - it means sap is flowing well). It may be a little early to be grafting - I learned the hard way that it's better to graft a little late (as leaf-out is just underway) than too early (when a hard freeze seems to kill my grafts). You may consider keeping some scion wood in fridge wrapped in plastic wrap and bring out for more grafting once the apple blossoms buds start to swell. A couple other things I like to do - I avoid skin contact with the exposed cambium and cuts (our skin oil can interfere with the grafts), and I apply a sealant or grafting wax to the exposed wood on the top of the scions. I'm quite confident that you will have a bunch of success with your approach - the above are just things I do to try and optimise graft success. Looking forward to the updates on your channel! Fun projects!

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  3 месяца назад +1

      All very good advice. I did about 100+ grafts and my method got a bit more refined. I would also soak the grafting end of the cut scion in my mouth so it was clean and moist. I also got better at securing the grafted pieces on the tree with electrical tape and then spraying the sealer. I got away from the plastic wrap that way. I will check in a week or so to be sure the sealant is working. But I didn't seal the open ends. I should have done that but I am guessing they dried out and kind of sealed off on their own. I will seal those in the future.

    • @OdocoileusFullDraw
      @OdocoileusFullDraw 3 месяца назад

      @@bill-winke - Nice! Yes - they will seal off on their own. You have 2 to 3 buds on each scion anyways, so worst case the top of the graft dries out and might lose the top bud but the others will be ok. Your successful grafts may hold fruit as early as 2025 fall so lots to look forward to.

    Bill, if you hold you knife upside down at the length of the cut you want and just push a bit will go in nice and easy and be a lot safer. Then just twist your knife and the bark will pop right open. If you’re using electrical tape just make sure you slit it open after healed up, it’s too strong for the tree to break it open.

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  3 месяца назад

Last year was a bumper crop!

      Michael, I do like the fact that these wild trees don't need any maintenance. The apples aren't awesome - a few trees are OK, but they are 100% hands off. These new grafted trees will need more maintenance, I fear, but they will produce better tasting apples too. Have a great day and thanks for the comment.

    Two points buy a grafting knife for about $25 and leave one limb on your tree to feed the tree for your first growing season .Graft that limb next year .I use a staple gun like you might use on a shooting range for making the bark hold tight to the scion .I have done lots of bark grafting onto seedling fruit trees that did not produce fruit large enough for deer .It needs to be heavy enough to drop and not just feed tweety birds .

    Giving me anxiety attacks over here!😂 If you don't mind me giving you a few tips, cut and peel the bark, less deep than your Scion will be inserted before cutting the Scion and move fast because your fresh cuts dry quickly. Then use your electrical tape and wrap it super tight. Then finish with your grafting paste or your fancy aerosol spray can you have. I use multiple grafting methods and bark grafting yields my highest success rate.

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  3 месяца назад +1

      I started to "keep" my scion cuttings in my mouth while cutting the bark and peeling it on the host tree. I then slid the scion in while it was still wet with saliva. Then as you say, I taped it tight and sprayed the sealer on it, skipping the plastic wrap step. I guess the only question now is whether saliva carries anything detrimental (I have seen this done often) and whether these cold temps we are getting now will do something to freeze off the scion. I am still learning for sure, but I did about 30 trees so I should learn a some things in a few weeks when the weather breaks for good. Thanks for the tips. I appreciate the comment.
