Kitty S In nature, there's always competition and conflict, and each one has it's enemy. In the case of Homo sapiens, that includes the flea the rat and the coyote. They are not inconvenienced by human development, quite the opposite, and are too large a predator to be skulking around residential areas. You are too naïve.

What have we given back to this planet? Even a tiny shrimp cleans and purifies the water.... we just love to take take and take... and not just what's needed, but in enormous amount. I live in Eastern Montana, land very scarce of humans and very full of mother nature's creatures, I'm a very avid outdoorsman, lucky enough to have a job that I get to spend every day in the field and every weekend on my personal time my dog and I spend it hiking, snowshoeing, camping everywhere I can... I've had encounters with every living creature under the sun and stars... Being mindful of our surroundings and having a respectful relationship with our surroundings is healthy to our soul, it's a balance to our existence and the existence of mother nature's creatures... I'm not against wildlife management, I'm not against farmers, ranchers protecting their investments... But being educated in how to coexist together and being humans that we are.. Were the ones that have to manage ourselves and the environment around us... Were the only creature to have this type of intelligence and we decide how we use it... I chose to live among mother nature and I chose how I react in my environment, I chose to coexist with my surroundings, it's my choice to do the right thing or the wrong thing, upset the balance of nature or live in the balance of nature, its my choice... I choose to be among nature and try my best to leave this earth with as little guilt as possible....

They're some of the smartest and adaptive animals anywhere in the world.There's so many of the them that all you can do is try your best at keeping your animals safe.I live on PEI , Canada and we're 6-8 miles from the mainland and they would walk across the ice to get here.I swear it's the only animal that looks both ways before it crosses the road lol.

Hey! Fellow Canadian and half Islander here! My mom's side of the family is from Bedeque near Summerside and we cottage there in the summer
Coyotes are part of the natural environment and need to be respected for the good they do in maintaining the balance of our delicate natural environment just as the wolves in Canada. The lesson learned in Canada was that wolves were needed to help preserve the ecosystem re preventing over grazing by deer. Coyotes serve a purpose and we need to look at what that is rather than trying to wipe them out completely only to regret that decision years from now!

You don't like the transgender pandering Nat Geo. Showing children that haven't hit puberty that it's normal to believe your something that you biologically are not.
Chesapeake Wood A person's personality, interests and biology not aligning with social expectations is one definition of abnormal. I think a better definition of abnormal pertains to rarity. When you look at only the numbers, these kids are not abnormal. According to the UCLA School of Law, approximately 9 million Americans identify as LGBT. That's roughly the population of NJ. I wouldn't call that rare.
A person not fitting-in because their personality, interests, ect. "doesn't align" with their biological sex is a lifestyle many people share. In the past (and still today), these individuals have been killed, tortured and exiled simply because they are perceived as weird. There is literally nothing wrong with them other than a possible identity crisis or state of depression imposed on them by the influences of others.
Isn't it time we face the facts and accept that these kids aren't the ones that are misaligned. What's wrong with Nat Geo showing everyone that "transgender" kids are as normal and human as anyone else? What's wrong with showing these kids that they aren't alone?
David S. What I meant is that this is the type of content that the channel should air, National Geographic was founded to show and educate about nature trough documentaries and photographs. I just think that sociology is not for this channel unless you are showing some particular tribes. I'm not arguing about whether or not all the genders discussions is "right or wrong"

You cannot get rid of coyotes, because when you hunt them they go into colonization mode,and have bigger litters and more frequent, they can thrive in packs but if pressured they disband the pack and spread out into breeding pairs have more litters. Hunting them in the west is why they're in all 49 states now. Hunting has the opposite effect
This is a great education, Coyotes are now in my urban area, hazing works, they eat rats and mice, and dear. which are over populating. So thanks NG.

These researchers seem very intelligent and balanced. I think this kind of behavior is needed with all the current issues, like refugees, climate change, and so on. A balanced view, where the points of both parties are recognized, instead of siding with one party and insulting the other one - that will just result in extremism, and everyone will lose.
I kinda wish all people are like this; balanced. I myself don't love coyotes the way I adore wolves, but I don't want them exterminated either way! Like some of the sheep herders on this vid, I don't wish to outright kill them, but make them understand that they're not welcome in human habitats.
This really seems to be a problem in today’s society. Nobody’s willing to take the time to try and compromise. We’ve developed an extremely harmful “you’re either with us or against us” mentality.
The predator "problem" is about money. The only human that needs animal agriculture is the rancher to make money and they want to do it as economically as possible. They have herds bigger than they can manage and protect. As far as not wanting to kill, you only have to search through youtube to find exuberant coyote hunters.
How foolish. What do you eat every day? I make enough money to sustain my stock and feed myself. Too many coyotes here. And when they trespass the hammer will fall.

Coyotes eat naturally similar to what wild wolves eat, yet they are more like opportune scavengers. Rabbit, birds, carrion... etc. They don't normally hunt in packs unless tricking big game or wolves/dogs with one acting as 'bait' leading them into a trap. I've done a lot of research on wolves so I know a thing or two about coyotes. This video was a nice information bonus! :)

Zach Serino This looks like Montana or Wyoming It's the only place I have been where I have seen ant envelope. Hen I lived in Tucson, in the foothills north of town, coyotes were killing pet cats.You let the pets out for a few minutes in a fenced backyard, seconds later the animal was gone. Coyotes are everywhere in the West, even in the LA basin.

You don't get rid of Coyotes by killing them , because the female will produce MORE pups IF the numbers are low ! That's one reason they howl , It's a roll call, if all of them don't report , female will produce MORE pups !
I believe it's pronounced ky-o-tee. At least that's what we call em in New Mexico where they're native to. That aside, nice video.
It varies from area to area, "Coytees", is from the S.W. Indigenous peoples, then the Spanish picked that up when they settled those territories. In our area, unless people were brought up on "Roadrunner" cartoons It's Coyote, with the silent "e". I've lived all over N.America and it's variable as to the pronunciation. Both are acceptable to the areas lingua franca (common speech).
Craziest thing i ever seen coyote wise was a mother denned up inside the cavity of a dead cow on the back of the farm🤢 the puppies were covered in rotten slop. Still cute af.

Coyotes help keep down the feral cat menace. Feral cats are the greatest nemesis to majestic birds of prey.
Great Pyrenees are great at keeping the coyotes away... Just know they're gonna do it by barking. A lot.

Maybe introduce wild goats? It could give the coyotes prey, so they're not focusing on the sheep - I don't know. I'm no expert, but I don't think bounty hunting helps the issue.
It's not really a lack of prey. Its more that the farm sheep/goats are Easy prey. Large herds? Check. Always in the same place? Check.
That's why a lot of times ranchers do send alpacas or dogs with them to help haze the coyote off of this prey. We want them going after harder prey like rabbits or even deer herds.

I live in California. I have two coyotes living in the field behind me in my residential neighborhood. On the other side of the empty field is a farm. One of the coyotes got into the field where the farm is and the great Pyrenees dog patrolling the farm chased the coyote off. It was amazing to watch. I was hoping the dog didn’t harm the coyote, as well as the coyote didn’t harm the farm animals. It all turned out good.
The trick is to stop enslaving those poor sheep. Problems solved.

I have never seen a live Coyote, but Foxes will look at you and run away. Exterminating any animal is absolutely wrong, but controlling the population maybe a good idea. Control yet protect.

The real issue is Humans have so successfully separated themselves from nature and yet deem themselves above it. We have also spread into every wild space and over burdened the natural habitats so only humans, their cattle, pets and the species that have exploited human activity--all other species are expendable.

Since this video was produced, donkeys have become much more popular for protecting livestock against coyotes. They have a lot of advantages over dogs.

If you have livestock on the land, you should have cowboys/ shepherds/ sheep-herd(er)s out there with them. Can't just expect to have an apex-predator-free healthy ecology

I live in a big city and across the street from a pack of coyotes. I like coyotes. Unfortunately, they eat pets in addition to pests.

They did this experiment in Yellowstone. Results have been catastrophic. They set off the ecosystem so much that within a few years rivers disappeared!

@@goneridin2 Any eco-system is naturally (not typically) upset by the introduction of any foreign living creature in it (humans are just one example of living creature).
My point was: if they introduced wolves with the intent of limiting the population of coyotes, that wouldn't be the only result, wolves will change the balance of the ecosystem in many other aspects with many other not necessarily desirable results. It's something that have been tried before and it failed so that's not the solution to reducing coyotes population.
@@robertoprestigiacomo253 I think we are referencing the same point. I was trying to clarify your meaning which seemed to be a bit vague or confusing to me. If people would stop trying to ‘manage’ (poorly, I might add) nature, it would eventually balance itself. Rather than killing animals or artificially injecting another predator (which incidentally also hunts livestock) it would be better to buy some llamas or Newfoundland or Great Pyrenees (not sure which breed does best) to protect the livestock and encourage the coyotes to hunt other wild prey.

For many years farmers and ranchers knew how to keep the numbers manageable. Then people started to move onto many acreages in rural areas. The new population of people actually fought against what was going on and did not understand the reality of it. They do not understand the threat of an overpopulation of coyotes. Would you want packs of feral dogs roaming the area killing everything in sight. When they start to roam in packs is when the trouble starts. They will take any thing that is in their area when in packs. If they can take down young horses , cattle, deer and sheep , they can easily take your dogs, cats, kids and people.
People don't understand how smart and adaptable they are. We left them alone until they started to run in packs and then you have to thin them out or else. When they get high enough numbers in cities you will be in trouble. When they start to run in packs people will die. They go after the easy kill first and move up the chain.
You need wolves, to balance the population.

In areas where coyotes are a real problem, trap some of the local resident coyotes, expose them to virulent strains of canine distemper and/or parvo, turn them loose to return to their packs.
Won't get all of them but it will wipe out a large enough number to make a difference. Especially if it is done when they have dens and litters.
That is incredibly cruel and inhumane.

They are just too cute for me to kill. They look too much like dogs. if they were killing my sheep...maybe I'd change my mind.
The finding of the research, as I understood it, is to haze or scare them off (it’s easy to do) so they will stick to hunting wildlife rather than domestic animals. Place alpacas or llamas(?) or domestic dogs with the herd of smaller livestock to deter the coyotes interested in the livestock. It seems pretty simple. I know people who have reportedly done this quite successfully.

I always feed the yotes...LEAD! And I like them more than all the other animals cause they are worth 50 to 60.00 a head. Got some or too many? Send them to Roy's Coyote Care Center...I will give them all they deserve.
