Here we go! Chester, PA. We start with William Penn. The landing was along the Delaware River. You were standing alongside the Chester Creek while at the Ethel Waters park. My mother lived the next block up when she was a little girl. They lived across the street from the Belgrade family. Marcus Belgrade was a horn player who played on Motown as artists, etc. Alex North was my grandmother's cousin. He was an Academy Award winner and made music for movies such as Spartacus. The store that was Burgers was a plumbing supply company. Next door was Delaware County Hardware and Supply and the other side was Delaware County Tobacco. The reason that I know this is that my family owned a grocery store in the 600 block of W 3rd St from 1920 till 2002. Please let me know if you have other questions. Also, the cemetery that you were standing next to has 2 signers of the Declaration of Independence buried there. Regards and thanks for stopping by Chester!!

Hey Captain. Greetings from Oslo, Norway. Morton's great-grandfather Martti Marttinen (Swedish: Mårten Mårtensson, or Morten Morteninpoika) was a Finn with roots in Rautalampi, Finland. Then a part of Sweden. So, he was at least part finnish! Which I might be as well (My Norwegian family comes in part from Finnskogene an erea of Norway settled by Finns in the 1600’s). And Mårten is the Swedish version of my name Morten (In Norwegian and Danish of which I am also partly, yes I’m a real Scandi/Nordic mix). But even as Scandinavian as I am, I love my baseball and that is why I started subscribing to your channel. Cheers from Morten 😊

Yeah, so I'm 7 or 8 years old in the 2nd or 3rd grade so what do I know? My teacher in Philadelphia teaches the class that Christopher Columbus thought the Earth was flat and was risking his life sailing off to the West. I find out later Columbus knew the Earth was round and this fact was hundreds of years old in 1492. Besides Lief Erickson was here long before Columbus plus Columbus never set foot in what is now the continental US. I always figured Columbus didn't discover anything. You leave Europe and sail towards the setting sun long enough, and don't hit land, you have to be the worst sailer that ever lived. You mentioned Betsy Ross, she was reburied 3 times. The original Cemetery was a Quaker cemetery on north 5th Street, this land was very valuable so it was bought by the city. all the graves were moved and she was re-buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery. That sight is still well marked. In July of 1976 she was moved to her house on Arch Street. When they dug where they thought she was in 1976 they found nothing, they dug over a few graves and found some remains and moved those to the home on Arch street. Betsy Ross may still be at mount Moriah Cemetery or under some huge building on 5th Street.

Philly Captain, thank you for your history lesson about William Penn. You’ve cleared up many falsehoods about the founder of Pennsylvania. Living in New Jersey my whole life the only thing I remember being taught about William Penn was that they built his statue on top of Philadelphia City Hall so that no other building could be taller. Haha, Comcast. I think NJ should focus on dumb issues like pork roll vs Taylor Ham and corruption, most of my state. Thank you for your continued hard work on teaching the true history of Philadelphia. Let’s go Phillies.

Berger Bros. Hardware heating and plumbing
supply store. Closed early 1980's. That entire block was all businesses. You had Delaware County Tobacco (suppliers of tobacco products, candies and other small things to retailers.) Next to it was the Sandrose Trophy Company and of course, the post office.

The post office there is pretty cool inside, had to go there to pick something up once. My band has a rehearsal space on the other side of Chester on 24th street. You’d probably dig the place. It’s an old mill from the 1800s

Actually my teachers didn't lie to be about William Penn, they omitted it totally. Learned about manifest destiny, war of 1812, underground railway, chris columbus - that bit was a lie... vikings were in canada long before Columbus. Was told i am an American [from the Americas] also which blew my young mind. My new us history professor, The Philly Captain, Adam the Woo handles Geography.

Venture down a few miles more to Historical New Castle DE where there is a statue of Wm Penn setting foot first in American soil October 27, 1682. There is a statue and marker commentating the event a block from the Delaware river. Evidently Oenn governed Delaware prior to Philly. New Castle is a miniature Society Hill with numerous historical homes and graveyards from the era. Worth the trip with ample pathing unlike Philly. BTW, were your history teachers Parochial or Public?
