I CHEAPED out with the Ryzen 7 5800X3D... and it was AMAZING!

- PC Gaming on Ryzen 7can be done with the BEST value, and today we find just that, coupling the Ryzen 7 5800X3D with a $25 Cpu cooler, 3600Mhz DDR4, b550 and then putting it to the test against the i5-13600K and fitting both outfits with an RTX 4090. Intel vs AMD hasn't been this good for a long time in the tech space. Though do you really need to spend that extra with either outfits? (also sorry for late review today).

the 5800x3D represents the pinnacle of AM4 for gaming. upgraded my 3700x for it a month ago. And DANG. it felt almost as tangible as my upgrade from a 1070ti to a 3080 two years ago. A fitting sendoff for such a legendary socket.
that's exactly what I wanted to hear! I am also contemplating replacing my 3700X with a 5800X3D and now I am jus waiting for a good deal 🙂
is it actually that much of an upgrade?
Im also thinking about replacing my 3700x for the x3D
honestly just waiting for the price drop to hit here so I can make the upgrade as well.

Im basically just waiting for the price to drop a little more, but im also very curious if its that much of an upgrade like people tell me it is.
I put a 5800X3D into my Asus X470F the other week, and whilst I expected it to do really well in sim racing titles, I was still blown away when I ran the benchmark in Assetto Corsa. At high settings @4k with graphics enhancing mods, I was getting ãn average of 60FPS with my 2700x, with the 5800X3D I got 145FPS! And it showed me (despite being 4k) my 1080Ti was bottlenecked by the 2700x, it is now the GPU that is the bottleneck. Roll on 7900XTX!
Wow I have a 2700x and 1080ti too. I'd love to see what results you get from other games at 4k with the 5800x3d VS the 2700x. I'm also planning on getting the 7900xtx. I might have to make some videos myself when I get the 5800x3d and 7900xtx to see how much more fps I get VS my 2700x. UPDATE: I went ahead and bought an rtx 4080 because I started streaming on twitch and the 7900xtx has those thermal junction temp issues witht he vapor chamber design. My friend bought a 7900xtx and got a replacement and still had the issue. He returned it and got an rtx 4090!
@@DigIntoGaming The biggest uplift is in Sim titles, VR and other CPU intensive games. That is where you'll get the full effect of the stacked L3 cache.
@@DigIntoGaming I upgraded from 2700X to 5800X3D as well and I have a 1080Ti. Spider-Man RM, Uncharted, GTA V, Tomb Raider all running smooth 60FPS with high settings. I have it locked to 60 as the TV doesn’t have gsync or free sync and it’s 60hz panel. The bottleneck is the gpu now and not the cpu.
@@Hellknight27 oh Ok that makes sense. So like Arma 3 and farming simulator 22 too? Overall from the benchmarks I've seen the 4090 definitely bottlenecks the 2700x, like 40 fps less on the 2700x than the 7950x at 4k and no doubt the 7900xtx will too. Definitely don't want to miss out on that performance and it's definitely a cheaper upgrade than ryzen 7000 series lol
My CPU frametime halved in AC in VR going from a 5800x to 5800x3d, so I can only imagine coming from a 2700x!
Excellent review as always, its awesome that you revisit options that are reviewed and put aside after release.
The fact that the cache is so massive means if you skimp on the RAM you have less of an impact on performance. Also the fact that it doesn't overclock (mostly) means you can get away with a basic motherboard that only has the features you need and nothing else. Then you can take any money you save and put it towards a GPU.
I mean cache can't really make up for ram
@@bluelantern5241 Faster cache means less data needs to go RAM to begin with. These chips have been tested in all sorts of conditions with all sorts of hardware. Faster RAM has a much lower increase in performance vs the non 3D version.

i like how you show the struggle of putting in work . great job man.
The Ryzen 7 5800X 3D I think is kinda like the GTX 1080ti of CPU's, truly ahead of it's time when it comes to raw gaming performance (Considering it is punching above it's weight vs DDR5 CPU's while using DDR4) and on AM4 (An almost 5 year old socket on it's last leg), I personally went with the i5-13600K because it's more recent and I stream while gaming so the e-cores will help a bunch there and for video editing etc. Buying into AM5 would've represented a bigger investment and Idon't have that money, people say oh 13th gen is on a dead socket already but I don't upgrade every year, in fact my current cpu is the i7-9700, I have an RTX 3060, it slightly bottlenecks the 3060 performance at 1080p, but the main reason for upgrading is because I stream and it's struggling to deliver decent frames in the game I play since it's CPU bound.
You can play videos on monitor 2 and game no issues on a quad core hex core or 8 core.
If you want to encode and game its best to have a 2nd computer. Streaming a video from you tube is no big deal for most cpus. I can do it with a 10 year old hex core xeon or newer. Sounds like you making excuses on upgrading.
@@Physics072I think he meant he livestreams while gaming
@@ohnobro3770 Yea he was not very clear on what he was talking about.
Yeah, I bought mine about a month ago. Prior to that I was on a 5600X from day one. I've gone thru 2 gpus, Vega 64, and 5700XT. I am now on a Sapphire Toxic 6900XT LE. It was good with the 5600X, but the 5800X3D was a generational uplift in my games. Just like you've shown very close or beats current 7000 series cpus in gaming. I will be on AM4 for at least another year. I am waiting to see what Zen 4 3D V-cache brings to the table and at what price.
Great thing about the 5800X3D is that it's not affected by lower IF clock as much as the other ZEN2/3 variants thanks to its massive cache. So ZEN/+ users can probably just swap the CPU and enjoy higher fps without worrying about upgrading their DRAM.
I can maintain in all games i tested all core at 4450, max all core, with a PBO -30 using max 105W. For gaming, is an upgrade to anyone with CPU´s from 1 year ago, especially VR and SIM´s.
I bought an 5600x around 3 months ago and i'm really happy with it. I change my ryzen 5 1400 for The 5600x , My Best change since forever XD. Got the 5800x3d on my x370 Crosshair VI Hero. An 2017 mobo, and I have almost top of the notch performance in gaming paired with a 3080. AM4 was absolutely an AWESOME platform.
From 1700, to 3800x and now 5800x3d, gains were just huge!
Thanks for another interesting video. I like how you point out; that with a bit of patience, you can put together a great gaming pc for a lot less.
The 5800X3D is the last upgrade for many early AM4 adapters. It's the 3rd and last CPU in my current rig that I've build in 2017. The best thing is that it performs just as well on an old x370 board, hardly any difference with newer, much more expensive boards. Think I paid 160 euros for my Asus Prime x370-pro and it's still going strong. Crazy value!
Same Asus prime pro X370, I had the 1800x witch was really bad a single threaded performance to a 3800x and that was like a new pc, going to be getting the 5800x3d soon as prices are now below £400 and that gets rid of the split L3 16mb latency penalties I have on the 3800x (factorio and other games quite sensitive to it)
3000 and lower have half cache available as advertised, 5000 4-8 core is full L3 cache available as advertised (5900/5950x is again split L3 cache but isn't any slower then a 8 core part due to IPC improvements on 5000)
Can't justify the price of the full system for 7000 thought (5800x3d keep me going for another 3 years I guess)
I had 2 of the Asus Prime x370-pro fail on me both times the memory controller since 2017. Moved to gigabyte happy since, will never touch asus in my life again because of that piece of crap Asus Prime x370-pro.
@@GoofySmuf I can only run my ram at 2933 on that motherboard
With which CPU? First generation ryzen had some serious memory issues and I couldn't get my kit to run stable on the xmp values either. The 3600 I had worked just fine, same for the 5800x3d. 3200 mhz is the max limit of the board though, so I am still using the same sticks I bought in 2017. It's the G.Skill Ripjaws V F4-3200C16D-16GVKB kit, for completions sake.
@@jadedrivers6794 It was paired with Ryzen 1700 and DDR 3200, the memory controller failed both times. The second-generation Gigabyte Aurus board resolved the issue. The first failed out of warranty and I purchased a new one. When the second one failed I did a RMA and got a the gigabyte board.

What a way for AMD to finish off the AM4 line!

I'm not surprised at all about how the rtx 4090s sold out so fast, as there are other buyers besides gamers and miners. For example The 3D industry which was accustomed to quadro cards slowly got around to using the 3090, which is a powerhouse for 3D in a relatively cheap price. I'm sure a lot of those studios unhesitatingly upgraded to the 4090, time is money, and those cards double their performance over the 3090 in 3D rendering.

I'd like to see your temps and cinebench scores at -5, -10, -15, -20, -25, -30 on the PBO curve. or at -20mv steps to -120mv using normal offset. very nice CPU and a valid option to the currently high priced AM5 platform to keep things going for another couple of years. best move by AMD to demo their 3D cache and give AM4 a really good send off. and recent price drop as well.
But you should also change PPT TDC and EDC. I´m using 105-80--95
You have no PBO ot overclock option on 5800x3d. You can only undervolt by traditional way by manualy offseting voltage in cpu menu.

Here in Canada, you can get the cheapest B550 MOBO for about $150, but they come with VERY cheap VRM coolings. If you want to opt for a decent b550 mobo, they are just about the same price as a B660 intel mobo.
I'm using my 5800X3D in an Asus Prime B450-PLUS mobo and all the components are running cool and fine, and has no performance issues.
You should test this again using the 2600x and 2700x as well as the 3600x and 3700x, also against the 5950x. With black Friday deals coming up it might make more sense for the extra productivity performance the 5950x offers to go with it instead of the 5800x3d. I'm just worried about the 7900xtx or other future gpus bottlenecking my cpu even at 4k. I currently have a 2700x and I'm looking for a drop in upgrade to get the most out of my 7900xtx I'm getting in the future.

So is 5800x3D that much better than i9 10850k?
@@TheKelz - Yes it is. I have a 120hz monitor, and the 10850K struggles to maintain a consistent 120fps in many of the games I play, but the 5800x3D does it with no problem. I recently bought a Ryzen 7 5800x3D paired it with my B350 Tomahawk with a 2666 MHz ram, insane performance uplift, I upgraded from Ryzen 5 1600. TOTALLY worth it. I would recommend it, this CPU is just a BEAST.
Get some 3600 or faster ram and you will be absolutely blown away by it bro
@@Cr0frog dude he have MSI B350 MOBO he can't up to 3600
I upgraded my 5800X w/ PBO2 to a 5800X3D which can't really be OC'd. With a 3070 Ti at 1440p, Horizon Zero Dawn ultra setting, DLSS Quality, went from 112 FPS to 138 FPS (Now runs at 150 FPS out of the blue but I did just upgrade the GPU driver and pushed my 3800MHz RAM to 4000MHz and set FCLK to 2000?) Shadow of the Tomb Raider with Ultra settings and RT shadows only went about 8FPS to 123 avg FPS. In both games, I used the built-in benchmark.
Bryan, I used brake clean and WD40 on my old B85, brought back a dead memory channel.
going to sell it on soon.
I this combo 4090 and 5800x3d. Very happy
I was blown away by the 5800X3D even upgrading from 5600x
What specifically impressed you?
@@selohcin fps in literally every game. it was around 40% more frames.
I just got this CPU and paired it with a 3070 ti ex 8gb and 32gb of 3200 ram and a 1tb nvme ssd and I have zero complaints. I can play every game on max settings with close to 200 fps or more at 1080p 165hz.
It's a remarkable CPU. I believe it performs well for database workloads as well.
LOL RUclips just learned I installed the 5800X3D today...and your video popped up haha. Its paired with my RX 6800! Fuck I love this CPU 2x 2TB Samsun 980 Pros, 32GB (2X16) 3600Mhz RAM my computer is now a beast. Mother board is a Aorus X570 Ultra paid AUD$519 NEW for this little beast
I agree, the cost of platform really lends to AM4. I got my 5800X3D on sale, a used B550 (carrier over Ram & storage, gpu) & away I went. Perfect used combo.
i have sale in my country and it CPU was cost more then all his cheap ddr4 platform.
@@saint9487 Ouch, perhaps there is an international seller that has a better deal. If you can, hold out. I'm amazed that I held onto my 6700k for as long as I did. Bought it new when it 1st release (2014).
@@MrMoxes i build my pc in 2014 i5 3470 so yeah no chance to upd, even i go in other country what i heave neare me it will cost 20% lower only, no i can`t but it and from DHL bc we have EU limits 200euro box and in you buy something you will pay 50+- % of cost.
@@saint9487 Ah, so you know what Im talking about. I suppose you could wait until the price comes down, or buy it at 20%. Hard to decide.
Better use the PBO Tuner v2 for the X3D. Getting 14800 in CR23 multicore with -26/-26/-28/-28/ 4x -30, reduced wattage from 138W to 113W.
currently have a 1700x and waiting for for the 7800x3d that is hopefully gonna come out early next year
Greetings from Spain. Great video. Would you rather perform a curve optimizer instead of this 50mV undervolt? I find these two ways to tune this processor and don't know wich is better.
Ive just upgraded from a 3600 to a 5800X3D and wow it felt like a whole new pc.Absolute beast of a cpu
Huge leap right!??? That CPU is a BANGER!!!
what GPU are you running?

Just ordered the 5800x3d to replace my 2700x. Going to try the under volt when it comes.
I have similar, FE4090, 3200 CL16 ram, Asus B550 board, and swapped out a 5800x for the 5800x3d. Though I do have it on a 240mm AIO.
I also used PBO2 Tuner (software that lets you unvervolt per core) and got -30 on all cores. In Cinibench R23 it pegs each core at 4450Hz and gets over 15k score.
I had the same gobsmacked result in the Tombraider benchmark and other games.
Cyberpunk is not much faster in top FPS terms but two things I noticed playing it (1) it is a lot smoother (2) you get much more fps in crowded areas
The 5300x3d run cooler than the 5800x and with teh 4090 the whole system is a lot cooler than my previous hot-box 5800x+FE3080
I did this so I can remain on my existing AM4 setup and wait a year to see the14th gen intel or Ryzen new 7000 x3d.
In the meanwhile, I just have to get rid of the 5800x :)
Thank you for the VIdeo. I just got my 5800x3d. Undervolting for tmep reasons at least till i can get a new Aio or Air cooler tbat can handel it.
Shadow of the tomb raider is a very good memory benchmark, so what its doing is using the huge vcache probably storing the whole benchmark in the cache or close to it. Ive been able to get a 5900x up to 295fps with ddr4 3600 c14, and more recently 350fps on my 7950x ddr5 6000 c30
wait for next 7950x3d it will be beast crazy...
I have a 5800x3d right here. I am just waiting for my new cooler to arrive before I can install it.
You forgot to mention that it's a drop in upgrade even on old 300 series AM4 motherboards. That is it's main strength, squeezing out one more upgrade on your old hardware. I put one in my Asrock X370 Taichi that i bought on Ryzen 1700 release day. It have served me well through many years and multiple CPU upgrades!
I have an old MSI x370 board that I thought about dropping a 5800x3D in and grabbing one of the new AMD cards. I'm worried about the PCIE 3.0 slot for the GPU bottlenecking any of the latest high end GPUs.
@@jeremyz6911 You will not lose much. 1-2% at most if any. 3.0 x16 is enough.
I have a X370 MSI with a ryzen 1700 - good to know, I was wondering if it will work... xD Any downsides?
@@MntRprznt None. Just make sure you flash your bios to the version required to enable 5000 series support before swapping cpu's. And some people report the 5800x3d running "hot". While I had no such issues, maybe re-evaluate your cooling solutions.
@@MntRprznt Not really, the 1-2% you will lose will not be noticeable, 1700->5800x3d is a MASSIVE update. I haven't seen any downsides at all except not having PCIE 4.0 but i can live without it.
Just make sure your board have support for it before you order the CPU. All major manufacturers should have an upgraded BIOS but you never know until you check.
Also update the board with the Ryzen 5000 supported BIOS before you pop the new CPU in, otherwise it won't boot.
Just bought this along with a 6950xt! I know there are new gpus but this will be enough for my 1440p needs
Bought a 3080ti a while ago, which I was running with my 3700X. Recently swapped that out for a 5800X3D and the difference is just Amazing. Really happy!
How big of a difference did you notice in what games? Do you play at 1440p?
TechYesBrian voice of reason!;-)
Im fighting the urge to upgrade from my 3600 then this video shows up.
I went from a 2700x to 5800x, when sending it out for RMA i could tell how slow the 2700x was. I'm only running a Vega 64 but even that got an fps boost especially in unlocked fps gaming.
I bought 5800X on AE using summer sale, for about $250 and it was amazing
not as good as 5800X3D but I don't think it is worth upgrading yet
also got X570 PG4 for $60 so that was W
Still plenty for gaming for years to come
@@ismaelsoto9507 yes and actual cores are the same, so you are just paying for 60MB or so cache, I might be buying newer CPU wjtn 3D-v cache tho
@@petertrex I see, and Zen 4 with V-Cache sure will be a beast for gaming
Yea its down to that now and would be an amazing start to a new build. I thought about picking up a 5700g because i just wanted to mess around with an amd apu and its really dropped in price. I fill like amd is probably selling more last gen cpu’s than the new stuff mainly because of the price cuts and cheaper motherboard’s and ram. And last gen was more power efficient. I use a 5950x and 5800x3d and I’m waiting on 7000 series 3dvcache models or model.
@@ChadKenova 5700G is good one too, but man you rockin' 5950X and 5800X3D? Got nice and juicy performance there....
I'm so jealous of the used parts prices over there. I can barely find a decent b450 for around 55 dollars in my country. Same thing with memory and other components.
$55 is pretty good actually
Me too I upgrade from an r7 3700x and I can tell that it’s a massive jump in term of FPS for 1080p 240hz 🎉🎉🎉
Just upgraded from my 3600 to this today. Fallout 4, in downtown boston (a notoriously CPU-intensive area thanks to bugthesda optimisation) I went from 45-60 fps to 120-144. A great upgrade for 350 pounds.
You at 1080 or 1440 bro
a320m-k incoming!! beast of a motherboard, did cost me 20 euros here in germany, and kicks ass so hard :D
that b550 is a steal for 50 usd used. I run my 5800x3d on the b550m and it also has zero issues with the 5800x3d. 120w max power draw is pretty easy for a board to handle so it makes sense you don't need alot for it. I will suggest using pbo tuner 2 in windows. Most 5800x3d chips ive seen can do -30 on all cores but make sure to test with core cycler and other programs. as its easy to start getting performance degredation or clock streching in ryzen but still be stable underload.
Just got one and it runs so cool just looking at Radeon 7000 series to change my 5700xt for
yes but if you go the 13th gen intel route that was reported to be the last path for that socket. The 5800X 3D is great for people already on AM4 and AM5 still has ways to go with regards to price cuts but the platform should be good for 3+ years.
If you upd system in next 3 years yeah it make sens go am5 but if not, you will better stay ddr4 , udk in my country only 5800X3D Cost by self 525$
That Wovibo looks like Assassin King 120 SE from Thermaltake.
I honestly did this same thing just last night(undervolting). Did pair it with the more 'spensive RAM though 3600mhz CL14.
Can you do another one of the extreme budget pc’s like $100 or less. With the drop of gpu prices and launches of new platforms there some great prices for older hardware.
ebay has a bunch of what was once considered mid tier pcs for around $400. I really dont think $100 is enough for anything.
I have a 6900xt paired with a xeon e5 2690v1 on a x79. I think it's time to upgrade. That 6000 multicore point ain't cutting it. I do love the smooth experience and the high 0.1 -1% lows but i'm doing mainly productivity tasks...
Nice video though hoped to see more info on temp during。But anyway do you think with a mesh case a master cooler hyper would do a decent job keeping it cool enough?
The 5800X3D is my budget upgrade path for the future. Just buy a used B450/ 550 mobo with a Ryzen 2700/ 3600 these days and max it out in like 2-3 years and still get a respectable performance!
To do a similar trick with Intel it would mean to buy a 12100/ 12400F these days and go for the 13600 or even higher in 2-3 years.
