  • Hogan's Heroes is full of great scenes, but this scene is one of the funniest ones! It's from the episode, "Monkey Business", from Season 3 Episode 29.

Burkhalter just leaving him with the gun which is what he was so furious about is the icing on the cake.

This may be the only appearance of the M1 garand on the show. It's also interesting that they gave him one to shoot with instead of a german rifle.

One thing to note is that during the capturing of Aachen over 5000 allied weapons were recovered from a depot, most were Enfields and Garands.

This show also has a German guard carrying a Thompson quite often in early episodes. It wasn't too concerned with historical accuracy lol

@jax1580 Shultz main rifle also was a Krag Jorgenson rifle which ironically would be given to rear line troops like Schultz and border guards

@@jax1580 Actually in reality, it would not have been out of place for rear-echelon troops to be armed with foreign weapons, as Germany made extensive use of captured vehicles and weaponry, with a whole system, the "Beutewaffe" (loot weapon) initiative, devoted to the gathering of captured weapons at Sammelstelle points for inventorying, categorization under the Waffenamt designation system, and shipment back to rear-echelon units with any necessary captured ammunition or parts. It was a useful way to shore up any weapons shortages on the front-line by freeing up some of the need to devote the standardized production of German weapons to units where supply needs were not always so immediately pressing and tenuous. For instance, the Thompson M1928 would be issued under the Waffenamt designation "Maschinenpistole 760(a)" (a) for American.

There were a couple times they gave SS troops Thompson submachine guns (American), which I find absolutely hilarious

That's why Burkhalter's staff car needed twin rear axles.... 🤣

Apparently Hogan’s Heroes was a big influence on Recess. They even had a gag in one of the episodes. To be frank I haven’t seen one single episode of Hogans but just looking at the lead American POW I can tell where TJ’s swagger came from.

I heard that Bob Crane got an offer to do The Newlywed Game at the same time and had to choose one. And Robert Clary's best friend on the show was Werner Klemperer. In real life Klemperer was married to the actors in the show who played Axis Annie and the baroness who played the daughter of the the general where Lebeau and Carter break into his study to steal plans.

Not much else was historically accurate in this show, why should the rifles be? But it was a fun show and still is almost 55-60 years later.
