Divine Meditation [Dhikr] on the Supreme Name: Allāh

  • The mystical practice of the remembrance [dhikr] of God [Allāh] - Divine Meditation - is central to Islam as a spiritual tradition.
“O you who believe! Remember Allāh with much remembrance.” [33:41]
The Prophet ﷺ said, “Keep your tongue moist with the remembrance of Allāh.” This hadith indicates the outward meditative technique of the tongue while other narrations indicate the inward techniques of the mind. But the basic premise of these spiritual techniques is that they are the means by which one strives [jihad] to draw near to the Divine Presence, ascending into the spiritual station of ihsan, which the Prophet ﷺ described as "...to worship Allāh as though you see Him, and if you cannot see Him, then indeed He sees you". Divine meditation is the vehicle of Enlightenment.
In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ revealed regarding Divine remembrance that Allāh says, “I treat My servants as they hope that I would treat them. I am with them whenever they remember Me:
if they think of Me, I think of them; if they mention Me in a gathering, I mention them in an even greater gathering. If they draw near to Me by a hand’s span, I draw near to them by an arm’s length; and if they draw near to Me by an arm’s length, I draw closer by a distance of two outstretched arms nearer to them; and if they come to Me walking, I go to them running.” This narration has many dimensions of understanding, one is that it is describing the journey to Allāh as an exponential ascension.
In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ said, “Remember [mention] Allāh abundantly, even until people accuse you of being mad and of unsound mind.” For, as he ﷺ said, "The Hour will not rise until 'Allāh, Allāh' is no longer said on the Earth" and "The Hour will not rise on anyone saying: 'Allāh, Allāh.'"
The Prophet ﷺ revealed that Allāh said, “So remember Me, so that I will remember you.” And this leads to the realization of the Qur'anic statement "...truly, in the remembrance of Allāh do hearts find bliss, satisfaction, rest, peace, tranquility, contentment, fulfillment." [13:28] Dr. (Shaykh) 'Umar Faruq Abdallah explains regarding this that God is the universal ground of pure Being, and so the more you meditate upon God, the more your own individual sense of Being feels real because you are actualizing in the Real.
This touches on another narration of the Prophet ﷺ where he says, “Indeed, the dhikr of Allāh is Akbar (enables one to experience Akbariyyah - Absolute Magnificence)!” Opposite to this, he ﷺ said, "The likeness of the one who engages in the dhikr of Allāh and the one who does not is like that of the living to the dead.” And so, when we do not awaken into the reality of Allāh, then we become alienated from the ground of our own Being, we have become forgotten as an existential state in which case the nihilism of Satan settles within. Deprivation and distance characterizes the heart that is devoid of the meditation on Allāh, and they live trapped in the illusion of the trickster.
To this, the Prophet ﷺ warned humanity, saying that “Satan has placed his mouth in the heart of the Children of Adam. When the Child of Adam engages in the dhikr, Satan moves away from them. But as soon they enter into a state of heedlessness and illusion (ghafla), ceasing the remembrance of Allāh, Satan swallows their heart.” And so Divine Meditation has been described as the greater jihad because it is to strive on the most fundamental and existential levels against the forces of nihilism and deprivation and absence.
Imam al-Ghazali writes, "Allāh is the Name for the true existent, the one who unites the attributes of divinity, is subject of the attributes of lordship, and unique in true existence. For no existent thing other than Him may claim to exist of itself, but rather it gains existence from Him: it is perishing insofar as it exists of itself, and exists insofar as it faces Him..."
Shaykh Ahmad Zarruq writes, "For the gnostics [‘Ārifin], knowing this Name brings about annihilation; for the spiritual aspirants [muridin] it evokes reverence, exaltation, awe, and intimacy, and drawing near through forgoing base desires and loving the Master [al-Mawlā]. This cannot be soundly aspired to save with a heart that is singularly dedicated to Him, with pure and unmitigated oneness that is divested of all else, which includes divestment from all states, stations, and miracles..."
And finally, the Prophet ﷺ said, “The mufarridun have gone forward [ascended!]"
To this, his companions asked, "Who are the mufarridun, Oh Messenger of Allāh?"
He ﷺ replied, "Those who are devoted intensively to the remembrance of Allāh. The remembrance of Allāh reduces their burdens [they are purified]. Hence, they will come with a little burden on the Day of Gathering."
[The mufarridun are the meditators, the gnostics, the ascetics, the spiritual travelers.]

It is from the Qadiri Sufi order. I believe this particular dhikr session was lead by Shaykh Abdul Qadir as-Sufi in South Africa.
