I think it is the trauma of David's mind he sees Ector everywhere like what Polkadot man said about his mother in Suicide Squad 2. He was saved from the Lab but not from the trauma. Becoming a soldier only gave a way to direct it. The AI just doesn't do a good job of expressing the shift in pov and emotional mindset in the later parts.

A six year old victim of experiments and torture suddenly became a 30 year old genetically modified super soldier and a scientist alien lived somehow after managing to escape from a planet that was destroyed, on a ship that was also destroyed, and then managed to get repeatedly killed but survive, and somehow the amazing earth forces after destroying the bad aliens did bugger all for decades and allowed the bad alien to continue doing stuff whilst dead. Have you ever heard of something called a coherent narrative?😂. This was awful 😖
