I was waiting for this, Richard. Thank you very much. No need to be apologetic/bashful about down booties, I get “cold feet” in cold weather as well. I like your cooking stove, I have seen some tiny ones that looks like it will bowl over when a breeze blows through. This is a useful video. Very much appreciated. Stay safe. 😀
Greetings again from Singapore! I will not ever climb those mountains you did, but this is an absolutely interesting and informative video. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you Richard.
Awesome review! I'm slowly buying stuff for mountain hiking too and your video showed me I don't need to blow top dollar on gears. Totally agree Uniqlo Airism & Heatech are great & inexpensive and light! I also love Head brand. Got a Head puffy jacket (synthetic fibre) in Hakodate, Hokkaido for SGD20+ IIRC... Super light and warm enough with Heatech underneath. Decathlon stuff are also inexpensive and good quality. Not the lightest gear so it's worth buying their better stuff like that Forclaz Air Structure which I have too. Will look into the Merino wool stuff and see if they catches my body hair. Have saved your video since I'm currently tackling 2000m+ peaks until I rebuilt my strength. Have gotten fat and flabby after COVID-19. Was able to tackle Mount Ijen 2700m+ but recently Mount Batur 1700m+ was much tougher. May do Yushan but only till the lodge.
agreed that taiwanese really eat damn good at camping , like a feast, but they dont hike that explain why you have so many things in the bag , for hike/camp purpose
Great video! I am currently planning a hike to 雪山 (3 days/ 2 nights) but I am a bit worried about snow or ice as I haven't done long hikes under those conditions. Aside from the spikes do you have any recomendations? Also you intruced your newly acquired satelite phone, do you know whether it is possible to rent one? When I clicked through the permit application it mentioned that solo hikers are required to take extra gear (helmet, rope, gps, satelite phone) do they check for that at the trial entrance? I hiked 玉山 in the beginning of April 2020 but there they did not check for any gear.
A trekking pole really helps in those conditions too as it can act as a third leg, but if it's really bad snow or ice then I will turn back (if I'm alone) as I don't have too much experience in those conditions. As for the Garmin, I don't know of anywhere that rents that kind of stuff - although there could be. For snow season permits, you need to fill in an extra form about your experience as a kind of disclaimer for the national park, but they will not physically check for these things at the trailhead (as far as I am aware). I recently did this for an upcoming hike.
Hi Richard, maybe you forgot to mention hahaha.....a roll of toilet paper, wrapped in a supermarket plastic bag to keep it dry and a bar of soap to wash up at the end of the day before tucking into your warm sleeping bag....hahaha. Could you tell us how much your entire bag weighs on the average for a overnight trip . thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. see you again next week
There's something so absolutely wonderful about your videos. Thank you for this trip and the many others that I have experienced. :)))
This episode is both educational and entertaining . Man, it takes a lot self confidence to wear those bright red pants 😄

You can get feet that attach to the stove to make it more stable, but I usually find a flat rock or something to put it on.

Thanks for the recommendations , Richard! I am getting into knives. What brands/models do you use?
And I agree, Decathlon should sponsor you!
I just have a Victorinox Swiss army knife. It's nothing special. Apart from that I'm blade free.
