I'm just into the first 40 minutes of the story, but I'm liking it. I have worked with young adults with autism who were similar to Jonah. While most were ok with being touched, they did perceive touch differently than you and I might. It is true that some people with autism feel discomfort (not sure if pain or something else; the people I worked with were non-verbal) with simple touch. One thing that bothers me is when people think that children with autism are undisciplined. This is rarely the case. Meltdowns are not temper tantrums. They can often be the result of over stimulation. Sometimes it's extreme anxiety. They can happen more often if there is difficulty or inability to communicate. I wish more people could understand autism. It is a wide spectrum. There are those who will always be dependent on someone and will even need constant supervision. There are also people who function quite well, and even excel (Elon Musk). Those who are high functioning can still have sensory issues (high sensitivity to touch, sound, textures, etc). Many higher functioning people tend to do a lot of masking, but they should not have to. It's ok to be different.
My nephew is autistic . Joanna is a very realistic portraits of a young person's struggles with autism. Great job. Thank you! I loved listening/ reading all of your other Amish novels as well.👍❤️
