Ah yes, side with the isolationist ethnonationalists who think anyone born outside the Enclave are either hideous mutants to be euthanized or "citizens" that only serves their ruling class. Would you like to be a slave, or conscript gunfodder?
There is a reason their existance ended with Fallout 2.

@@mannhouse8014 I mean you don't need a faction to be compelling to join them in a game, look at fallout 4 every faction is pretty shallow and not compelling when you actually look at them. Should've just been an option since if you're gonna be evil, then join the "evil" faction.

Fallout 3 has it's pros and cons, main narratively. Good start, fairly flexible at first, no real issues to take with it. It then crumbles slightly at Project Purity: James somehow got back in, left some PDA logs, then bailed seemingly just before the mutants got there. It then starts to rush: You get James back, it's all solid enough, then ENCLAVE. Things then seem to rush to the end: Bail to Lyonshood, join them (Whether you like it or not), go to the location where the worldbuilding, script, and general choices all die at once, then onto Vault 87. 87's actually good, but then we just end it with more "Enclave bad", "Eden bad", and then it's the finale. It's like the longer it went on, the less work and effort went in. Hell, that entire Enclave internal politics and BOS civil war are basically nothing, despite being something solid to build on.
3, as a whole, really isn't bad, and I'd unhesitantly say it's better than 4 or Skyrim. Problem is basically every facet feels rushed, undercooked, or just wasted.

F3 suffers from the regular issue with Bethesda open world games and that is a lackluster main story that is essentially just a series of fetch quests and acting as a messenger for different people and groups until it’s time for the final push. It’s boring and repetitive to be forced to go to point A and talk to someone just to get to point B but person in A needs me to go to point C to get something or someone for them and so I have to go to C only to find another person who needs something from someone at A and it just goes on and on and on and it feels like I’m the post apocalypse Sisyphus doing an unending task. And tbf New Vegas has this issue too but it’s offset with a better story and more interesting character interactions than you becoming their errand boy for like 20 minutes.

One of the many problems with the main quest is that it forces you to invest yourself emotionally into the search for your father only to quickly brush it off once he dies as well as the tonal shift where we go from getting accepted into a child's only settlement to introducing a never before hinted giant robot because we gotta have an epic final showdown
And to top it off, before the DLC, we had the whole 'nuh-uh I won't activate the purifier even if I'm immune to its effects, get irritated loser' because sacrifice even if said message was barely part of the story

I've been playing RPGs since around Baldur's Gate 2 and the one conclusion I've come to make about Bethesda games is this:
Companies like Obsidian (and formerly Black Isle), Troika, InExile, FromSoft and Larian make RPGs where the world itself is a living breathing organism and the player is a character in it. They fill a role, a character and move through the world as that character. The sidequests are stories through which the PC experiences the world and extends their lived experience in the world. NPCs are actual characters that exist outside the PC. The world doesn't revolve around the PC - the PC makes a name for themselves through their actions.
Bethesda makes RPGs where the world is a theme park, where NPCs are mascots, sidequests are sideshows and quest items are rewards for completing the sideshows. The worlds aren't cohesive or interconnected. The plots are miliquetoast because Bethesda's goals are seemingly to distract the player with sideshows instead of committing to an actual story. The PC is the centre of the universe and as such is empowered as much as possible, despite lapses in logic and poor narrative execution.

4's story is okay as an outline, but it relies almost purely upon plotholes, things going unexplained, PCs and NPCs purposely making stupid decisions, etc. The story has been dissected a million times and that's almost universally the verdict. 3's plot criticisms usually revolve around it being weak rather than broken in various ways (once Broken Steel fixed the ending anyways)

Dude the writing in these vids is so good! "Greater good beware, I give myself to thee" is an awesome line. And I think 17:46 is ur best joke since u called the snipers in Operation Anchorage "crispy rangoon" hahaha
It was a great game, not as good as New Vegas but better vibes. NV kinda feels too safe if yk what I mean. Super built up towns, a huge city with big neighborhoods, fresh food, clean water and wild plants. Don't get me wrong NV has a great map and places like Jacobstown are really kewl (real snow!) but damn even seeing living trees in Oasis is just mind blowing. There's maybe two or 3 actual decent towns, and raiders and stuff around every corner. The kind of gritty setting I like~
Far as the story goes it's pretty good but too short, and like you said you don't get as much choice as you should. This is the same game where you can hit people with the mind control ray and sell em into slavery, and also blow up Megaton, why can't u side with the Enclave? I'd love to be able to take out Autumn and president Eden and become the new president taking a fat hot steaming shit all over your father's dream. On the plus side tho you do get to meet Fawkes the best companion of all time. Speaking of, who's the robot companion you showed at 45:53? Musta missed that one when I was playing

The main quest is TERRIBLE but I still love this game. A lot of it is nostalgia, 2008 was an awesome year for me and Fallout 3 was a small part of that. Fallout NV is clearly a superior game but unlike Fallout 3 I can't vividly remember specific special moments. Like standing on the balcony of Tenpenny Tower the first time, looking out over the wastes listening to that haunting/calming ambient soundtrack.

NV was fun at First, but after. 200 hours the waste land is incredibly empty/ Underdeveloped in terms of exploration and the replay value is just not there. It's main story quest is praised, but house is literally the only logical option. Main story quests, regardless of how many options are by definition linear So I'm not exactly sure why they are praised for replayability. The spawn points for enemies are predictable and many of the models are just reused from fallout 3.
Fallout new Vegas Has a few things Going for it and that's the crafting /weapons modification/ ammo selection...... Aside from that, fallout 3 is much better.

So I agree and disagree with the ending of your video (side note I have agreed with almost all of your FO3DLC videos) when you talk about being unable to make different decisions. Looking back at FO1&2, while you can side with the Master, you will always get a game over because it's not how the developers wanted the series to progress. If they did, FO2 would be a bunch of super mutants dipping across the country. You CAN eff around for 150 days and run out of water and lose the game. Nothing is stopping you from that, but the devs wanted you to succeed. Siding with the enclave+eden kills everyone. Every super mutant to scavenger that drinks from the rivers will die. Even vault dwellers will die, and they've been exposed to the fewest RADs comparatively. The argument could even be made that and rain falling in the CW could contain MFEV so captured rain water would be deadly, it sounds like the same conundrum a FO1/2 dev would run into. You lose the choice to join the enclave because then they can't continue a story in a later game (Deacon/McCready in FO4) all I'm saying is, every story, even an RPG needs a plot. They can be a sandbox, but a sandbox can only be so fun without a story. BotW would not be as fun without the stories. I think about Just Cause 2 and how it's just a mindless shoot em up blow up the red barrels game with a story duct taped on. It's designed as a sandbox where you make your own fun. However, the plot doesn't matter when you're ziplining baddies off a mountain. So yeah, it is a choose your own color to color in the coloring book (use big guns, or unarmed to clear a dungeon or speech check to skip it) but every single RPG is just another page seeking to be colored. From Pokémon, to Zelda, to Fallout 1-4, there is a path you will need to eventually follow to finish the game. You can't set up mini nukes around PP and blow it up before finding James. You can't tell LP to football it off the map. Nor can you hop in the alien space ship and blast raven rock before it's discovered. Having guard rails preventing certain actions doesn't make it a bad role play game by default.

Beautifully crafted? I dunno, the world doesn't look like it can function. There is no food, and no, tins of spam don't count, that runs out. Like there's no farms, crops, livestock....It's so bleak nobody should be alive, nobody. I guess they get it from the traders, but that's hardly sustainable. Everyone should have starved. There could be hunter/gatherers, but I doubt that in such a hostile world. Our ancestors didn't have to contend with undrinkable water, irradiated air and overpowered mutant beasts.
