  • What happens putting a powerful neodimyum magnet close to a cathode ray tube television set?
Cathode rays are electrons in movement inside a vacuum tube. Those electrons, being charges in movement generate a magnetic field so they can be lead to the phosphors of the screen with a set of coils that modulate the TV signal. With a magnet it is possible interact with the electrons and distort the image an alter the colors.

Modern Flatscreen does something kind of similar, but you have to throw the magnet at the TV instead.

Did you notice how it seperates the primary colours
    into organised lines..
A prism does this as well..
    Zeeman effect

The black hole is there because the magnet is pushing away electrons that are shot by cathode-ray tubes

I looked this up out of curiosity and entered a spiral of videos like this.

Does this mean magnetism is the key to ftl space travel?

Actually "electron current" interact with magnetic field but, not generate its own magnetic field. This fact is experimented and proved. This is very interesting and confusing behavior of electron. I think, there's still some question marks about "electron".

yeah, don't try this at home. even if you don't have a tube-tv.

I know that it would be wrong anyway, but I am just interested why?

@@nadyamikhailova7527 CRT's are a device originally made to prove what the outer parts of an atom were made of. We found out that it was a negatively charged particle, so the tv has magnets in it to turn it into a beam. Now this would only work if something positively charged is on the end, so CRT's have magnetic phosphorus coating the lines on the screen. If you put magnet too close it may move those phosphorus lines permanently and mess up the lines.

    • @oatmealman1586

Oh, and modern ones use more complex circuit boards meaning they're more susceptible to magnetic damaging since circuit boards use magnets to store the data for their programming. This means that putting magnets too close to an LED or OLED may erase all the data from the circuit board making it just an non programmed screen.

@Plasma Rifle The "static electricity" like stuff on it detects the signal coming from the blaster.

@Plasma Rifle You're correct. Modern TVs typically have too much input lag to display the targeting frames of light gun games at proper times. CRT TVs don't have this problem.

That magnet will not affect the TV's health at all. It only deviates the electrons flow applying a magnetic field.
