For anyone who doesn't know, MI Marbles can be used as a shift register (x1->x2->x3) IF the x side is externally clocked during external processing mode.
@@MonotrailTechTalk there are some really high quality clones out there. I have a Pachinko from Michigan Synth Works. Like many Mutable modules, it does more than you’d expect!

In an unfortunate coincidence, my main shift register- the After Later Audio uO_C- has been sent back to the retailer for repair/ replacement as it is not fully functional. Its Copier Maschine app would be ideal here- but I’ll just have to wait…
Sorry if i missed it, but should the synth voices be tuned exactly the same? Got it now i think, been struggeling with this patch for some reason(maybe a faulty DIY sequencer) also using the step 8. Anyhow beautifully explained, much appriciated!
Hi there! Couple of things are important: The oscillators need to be tuned in the same note, could be different octaves though. The input sequence needs to be quantized to a scale. And the shift register needs to have a very steady voltage output. Glad you like the video though! :)
@@MonotrailTechTalk Thanks, working like a charm now. Using Hermod as a seq into step-8. Hermod has a key-combo to instant generate a new random sequence, its like an endless music inspiration setup, and almost everything sounds great 😊 👍
Now I want to go downstairs to my studio and start playing with copiermaschine in O_c. I forgot how much fun this approach can be for making intricate stacked melody lines.
Hey, thanks! The step 8 is a great module that can do a lot more than being a shift register. The sliders can be used to attenuate each of the output signals. You don't want to do that will 1v/oct sequences, as they'd get all out of tune. But for other things like modulation sources it's great. I did a video on step 8 in detail if you are interested :)
Thanks! That Yamaha really sounds good. It's been on that spot for some time because the sound fits in a lot of times. Now jut need to find more time to practice on it :/

Great Video BSP is essential for me So hands on.... All the Shortcuts for transposition / Scale Mode Change / Key Changes / Real Time Note Input for sequences / Saving / Copying / scene creation I learned maybe 10% of its capacity You may feel like an octopus when your in the zone with the BSP lol
The BSP was my first sequencer, and still love it. Really perfect as a studio tool. Performances. Midi to CV interface, etc etc. Would get a new one instantly if it would brake :)
this is the thing i love about modular. there are so many possibilities that come from one simple module, depending on how you hook it up in sequence. great tutorial as always!
thank you for this detailed and helpful video! loved to see the little wurlitzer style improv with the sequence :) i am currently working with all analog synthesizers and pure data at the same time (though i use them as two separate units). since i get to know these very different styles of making modular music, i am wondering if it is possible to do something similar as you did with analogue modules - i am thinking of something like the buchla 5 step sequencer and a sample and hold or maybe some kind of ‚maths‘ module (serge/buchla/make noise). and would it be playable and interactive in the same way? has someone tried this?
Thanks! Glad you liked it :) Just to be clear, these are all analog modules, the step 8 included. But you could try to break up the functions and use dedicated modules for each functions. Would become a big setup though, if even possible! Making your own seqeuncer is fun though, I plan a video on that. But the shift register part is tricky.
Dang, I'm looking for something with similar function to Step 8 without the high cost and high HP usage. I was looking at Amnis but it looks like that module outputs gates instead of the voltage from each clock cycle. It's a cool gate sequencer but I was really hoping to make those echoing melodies like you demonstrated with your Step 8. Is there anything else like this series of Track and Hold circuits? I see that Doepfer makes something that might work with the A-152 but I can't find much else... Edit update: Oh and the comments come through. Didn't know marbles can be used as a SR. also the makers of Amnis got back to me and apparently i was confused about the differences between an analog shift register shown here and a digital shift register that creates gates like Amnis does. Now I'm curious what Marbles outputs: gates or voltage?
Hi there! Think Step 8 is pretty unique, and very powerful for the size. Also the accuracy is very good, but they make you pay for that :)The A-152 is nice, but doesn't work like a shift register. Some people mentioned Marbles indeed, but I have no experience with that module unfortunately! You might have to read the manual on that :)
@@MonotrailTechTalk looks like Ornament and Crime can do similar things as Step 8 but only 4 outputs. Plus it can do a ton of other stuff so I took advantage of a black Friday sale to add yet another module to my rack!
@@MonotrailTechTalkjust updating in case anyone else wanted to know: intellijel Shifty is kind of like half of a Step 8 in both HP and price and it works very well for some of the techniques in this video. It's like a Step 4. Ppl should look into it and see if it's for them. I've been very happy with my purchase.
