I must have been gone a long time, where did all this hair come from?
Cha Cha Cha Chia!!!!
I was going to say he got a full grown bush on his face. Like God damn lol 😂😂😂
Yo Ace love your videos
What I tell every recruit. "Get ready for lack of sleep and cold dinners."
You hit that on the head my friend!
Long time ago I learned that _the microwave_ was the most valuable device in the kitchen. It has the magical ability to make cold things warm in under two minutes.
Thank God I didn't become a Cop..I wd hate my life I swear!
@@CrazyGamer-nt7nf Anymore the "hate" on police can be a good thing. Just hear me out. It's taking the glory away and only those that truly want to help and serve are pushing through. In my opinion, it's what I am seeing nowadays.
@@The_Crimson_Fucker haha my only friend when I get home at 6a.
Been on nights for 3 years, can confirm 100% accuracy here. What you forgot to mention is when we work side jobs we have to somehow get used to being awake in the morning for a couple of days before going back to night shift mode
That's similar to my nightshift job I had years ago. Except, the difference between you and I, I'm assuming you are LEO, you put your life on the line for everyone, practically
A wise LT once told me.. sleep is for the weak
Been on midnight shift for three years, I think it's great for experience. However, I'm definitely feeling the effects. It's a trade off.
Same here, i have to use melatonin
There was a marijuana addict with a knife that I dearmed before..
I'm actually heading in now. 6pm-6am. Nights sucks, for me. As soon as I get home, my wife heads to work. Nice beard btw.
And if you have a beer after work, people will think your an alcoholic since your morning drinking lol
Can't agree on the beard at all. Too untidy and not sharp due to lack of trimming and conturing.
I'm currently 6p-6a. The positive is I have no wife so that part of it doesn't suck, the negative is working 12s 6-6 makes dating insanely hard. People just can't understand how hard it is to do this shift and maintain a consistent social life that revolves around people who work office hours
I remember mine was 1830hrs - 630 you would legit start to crash at 4 am and then come home feelings like trash
No woman would like that beard. How is he going to " EAT" a woman *ut ?... 🙄
Graves is where it's at!!
I work 4 on 3 off, then 3 on with 4 off + mandatory overtime 6 PM-7 AM.
Love my job!!
Damn. You really did Firefighters like that😂
I'm not a cop, but my kid is. I know I don't have to tell you this, but a cop is never really "off duty". Always watching, always aware, always on guard....always ON DUTY!👍🇺🇸
THANK YOU to ALL!!
That’s what my dad said who was a cop for 15 years. “Son once you put on a uniform you are always aware and always on duty until you retire/quit, when I took off my uniform I finally became my self and got the biggest breath of fresh air”
Yet, people like you manage to keep up with this hectic job and sometimes a thankless job. So, a huge thank you for your service.
The job pays pretty well in my city at least. 50k starting off and within 6 years you will be making around 85k.
@@Johnnyy832 payscale isn't enough for the shits you deal with. It doesn't equate to that. It requires a different mindset all together. There are jobs with a higher pay scale and fewer shits.
@@beastx7152 That can really be said by any profession really. Just look at restaurants, they deal with shit people everyday.
@@Johnnyy832 I have yet to see someone shoot/ stab at my server
@@manywinters You do realize delivery jobs have almost 2x the chance of being killed compared to an police officer job right?
I worked on a ambulance squad overnight for 10 hours. We slept most of the time too, until toned out. My then PD did 8 hour shifts. As a rook I had to do all the crap shifts that nobody else wanted. With seniority I got onto day shift. Now I'm retired & feeling lost. I miss the department
Thank you sir
Thank you for your service Billy. I am a little late in the game at 35 but I’m in the process with CHP now
Honestly don’t think it gets any worse then working at a Constantly Understaffed Jail as a Corrections Officer, so many16 hour shifts, it was rare for me to end the pay period with less then 120 hours
Making bank?
But they paid you over time, didn't they?
@@MidnightThing Not really, more hours meant more deductible taxes, plus for as much money as the county received, they definitely looked at last
@@Gleb-dv7pe they did but OT was and still is mandatory, I could care less about an extra $200 dollars honestly. Plus I could barely function after having to crank out my first 16 hr shift and getting only 4 hrs of sleep
@@edwarddowning7531 that's insane. They should not allow people work 16 hours a day. That's really work-go sleep home-work job.
Glad to see you’re doing okay! We missed you 401!!
welcome back. we missed you 401!!!!!
If you find a large department with a full time SWAT team. It’s pretty much just like being a firefighter. Just saying
You hit the nail on the head my friend
Not true in fl...my swat team works 10 hrs... we do regular patrol with our swat gear in the trunk on call with only 5 hrs paid training every week....only the shield drivers are at base
I’m on a team in Va. part of our team is full time and those guys work 4 10s each week but it is constantly adjusted for operations. If they arent on ops or planning them or teaching something they are training… about the sweetest gig there is
@@d.a.b2374 Then you don't have a full time SWAT team.
I saw a public tv special about the Daytona Beach FL SWAT in the 2000s, 2009 or so. They are all volunteers, no hazard pay or added benefits. No extra notice on promotions, boards. Yep, no thanks! DBPD is not a great PD in general but that's a different topic. I'd add that only about 30% of USMS marshals make it through the rough SOG course. SOG is the elite SWAT/SRT unit of US Marshals.
Interesting point with court apperance..... That would NOT be legal in Norway. If you have court during the day, you would not be allowed to work that entire previous night. Max time at work would be 13 hours per 24hours. Then rest for some hours before you are allowed back. The Dept would have to find someone else to cover your shift.
Kinda surprising the PD would allow it, considering the liability and bad press if you make mistakes after being awake for so long....
Edit: I have also worked the 'Mon, tuesday, friday-Sunday and then wednesday thursday the following week' shift. I hated it. I would rather work one full week, then one week off.
@@ortymdaha3119
Yeah I’m going to Norway too and I’m finding shit on every MF’r I see walking around.
You!!!! Yeah you, I need a day off, you’re going to jail let’s go, get in.

You also attend some training camps and can also go on a three week exchange tour abroad. Third and final year is at the Academy again. The Academy also have a Master degree program and other specialized training courses.
FYI I am not a police officer, but the regulations I mentioned apply to all workers inc cops.
Same in the Netherlands, I usually do like 8 hours a day
Norway stays winning by taking care of their people!
@@MikeIzzle_ Aw yes the classic Norway vs. the US.

Do I really have to tell you how stupid it is to compare these two together? Come on folks use you brain for just a couple minutes
I love your videos! I just took the Civil Service exam and physical fitness test for my local department here in central Texas. Thank you for the information over the past few years!
I am scheduled for 64 hours this week. We normally work five 8s. When the department is short handed or people are sick. The police still have to be there. Be prepared for the hours. It is still a great career, just know what it is.
I can see that. Overtime is a big push. You make 💰 but it can wear you down.
Cops should be sponsored by monster, rip it, bang, et cetera
I just took the civil service exam partially thanks to you. Waiting on my PAT. Much respect and appreciation! I want to protect and serve with all my heart.
Welcome back 401! Say hello to Mrs 401 for me
Love your vids, thank you. I am on my way to academy 17 weeks now because of your motivation! 😊
Starting my academy in 15 days, as a trucker who works 3rd shift for the last 6 years doing 18-20 hours a day I think I can handle the rough schedule and I just wanna thank you for all your help i am beyond grateful for you bro thank you 401💙
that's something I want to do in the future, become a police officer but until then I'll just keep looking at police videos and learn some stuff at my explorer post. Hows your academy going?
How are you liking it
Thank you for sharing and thank you for protect people and other policeofficers .
Would love to see an episode covering the best technologies, such as phone apps, - the “must have” and recommended apps and gadgets for cops and investigators.
Another point about overnight shifts, it could be a slow night and all of a sudden, you get a hot call an hour before the end of shift.
There have been times where I was scheduled until 6am but wouldn’t get out until 10
Sit Wait and Talk. You might kit up and then stand by for 6-14hr as a suspect gets tired, drugs wear off, gets a meal 🍽. Some PDs and sheriffs have SWAT/ESU do high risk warrants or arrests of fugitives. That keeps them trained, alert.
I love nights. I did dayshift for 4 weeks on FTO and am very happy I got put on nights. It actually works for my family life better than I thought it would and I hate waking up early. I'm a night owl. We do that panama schedule. I will say by Sunday night I am ready to be done lol
Hey Officer401, I start on Monday as a Police Officer with my local PD. I'm pretty nervous but also really excited!
And honestly I feel the 3 days off every other weekend is way better than 7 straight days on and 7 off
The department where I live works 10 hour days. And that’s the department I want to join. Thanks for the video!!
Ahhh a video that hits home for me. Officer 401 reminds me so much of my dad. Leaves for approximately a lifetime and then comes back as if nothing happened. Welcome back sir ❤️
Maybe it's just me but I don't think those crazy working hours are the best thing for someone responsible for making life or death decisions in a split second.
Thanks for sharing so much of your career with us!
@John Spartan defund?
Same here
It's not..... yet, I have Officers working 18 hour shifts every day with only 8 hours off in between shifts. When you break down the drive time, eating, showering and so on that's MAYBE 5 hours of sleep after working 18 hours and then back on duty for another shift... it sucks and it's dangerous.
You would be absolutely correct felixG83! The truth is, Law Enforcement is the epitome of what's called a "Toxic Workplace."

Love how police and fire fighters make fun of each other, LOL!
Felt like a lifetime since last upload...
A salute to all the brave Officers 🌟
The department I volunteer for has patrol on the 2 week schedule. We have 4 shifts, 6a-6p 6p-6a 10a-10p and 3p-3a. The 6a-6p, 6p-6a flip every 4 months. Shifts are rebid every year (so seniority get first pick), but you can not bid for the same shift as the previous year. And they can not work more than 16 hours in any given 24.
*( It's a pleasure to see you back and doing well. Stay safe, and thank you for what you do for the all of us in GA )*

The firefighter roast had me ROFL lol!! Awesome video 401, really informative! Your videos are super entertaining and educational.
I Just became a police officer. I always loved your videos. Going to midnight shift soon after my fto training is finished. It's taking some getting use to wearing the badge. Reports suck but it's all in a days work 😅
We work 11.5 hour shifts 4 days on 4 days off makes 161 hours every 28 days. We have permanent shifts: days 0600-1730, evenings 1330-0100, and midnights 1930-0700. I worked 5 years on mids and loved it and have now been back on eves for a little over a year. This schedule is nice and once you have 5+ years on you pretty much only get transferred to a different shift or station if you request it. Rookies get moved where needed…
You are absolutely right about working nights. I also work the 1st watch , that's what we call nights. You forgot to mention mandatory overtime due to manpower shortage that some departments have to work including mine..👮♂️
I worked the schedule you described at the 3 min mark. We worked 5 -5. It was great. Our town was small enough the courts would usually work with us unless one of the attorneys pissed the judge off. I miss those days. Great people and we had a very strict department where the chief had high expectations. People who couldn't fall in line didn't last long.
Did you shoot any black kids?
I remember an ex-cop telling me that when it comes things like snow-storms, unlike the rest of us who call in, they have to go in. So there's something else aside from shifts. God bless them for doing it.
Very informative! Thanks for the intel!
Here in Colorado most police departments work 4/10, while sheriff's work 12's. I work for a federal police department and I work 5/8, 11pm to 7am. Overtime is available.

would you be open to making another k9 video on things to expect? im an aspiring k9 officer, and want to know more ab it from someone who's been a k9 handler. keep it up man!
I start my first police job Monday. I’m 26 with 3 kids under 6. My wife’s pregnant and giving birth anytime. I’ve been binge watching your videos trying to learn as much as possible. I don’t do academy until January so just FTO until then.
My career began in ‘68 and we rotated eight hour shifts weekly on a five on, two off schedule. Throw in court and it was tough unless you were fortunate enough to be in court on day tour.
Thank you for letting me know
It sure is good to see you again! Wishing you hot dinners and considerate judges.
Be safe, always.
Thanks to you officer401 i have decided to apply to the LAPD im in the process passed my Essay and multiple choice test. Waiting on my ploy, psyche, and interview, Its a longshot but i really want to be the first Police Officer in my family i have been the first to do things in my family and this is will be my greatest accomplishment in my life. Thanks again for your videos. Thanks again for all your help.
How did everything go?
Could you make a video on how State agencies assist other departments? I’ve noticed down here in Texas when crime gets high our city and county agency will call for trooper to assist with direct patrol in those high crime areas. I’m curious on there roles when they’re in the city limits.
We go off of a 6 month shift bid and it’s based off of seniority. The most senior officer gets to pick his shift first and the newest guy picks his shift last. So as you can imagine, day shift is full of old heads and all the rookies are on nights
May not be law enforcement currently (hope to be within a few years) but I do security and I know how shifts can be. Had to do a 16 hour yesterday then right back in the next day for an 8 hour (thankfully)
Ive worked an agency where i worked the panama rotation day shift and on my "off" days i had to cover the night shift on my opposite rotation.
Random question, how do you find out if a department has a good reputation? Especially as a civilian interested in entering law enforcement. Thank you in advance.
I thinks 10s are the best. The shift over lap is awesome Thursday-Sunday for the busy days. Plus 4 on 3 off is amazing.
I have that “trumped”with changing every 7 days to another shift. Midnight, afternoon and then Day shift “Then” your 1 once a month weekend.
That's why it's important to have good leadership on certain shifts especially night shift. I had a captain who told us if we worked the night before and then were in court all day, not getting any sleep, and then had to come to work that night, to take a one hour nap at the division in the secured area.
Here in Australia,we have 3X8hr shifts,Day 7am-3:30pm,afternoons 3:30pm-11pm & nights,11pm-7am, times are approximate but that's basically it,sweet!
ive been on night shifts 2 and a half years now and my shifts are 10:30pm to 6:30am so thankfully i do get a little time to sleep but often i just wind up having a lot of crap i have to do after my shift and wont get to hit the bed til 6pm
My recruiter with Highway Patrol said something about the long week and short week schedule resulting in us working like half the month. I think you should do a segment on what kind of side jobs cops do to make more money. Thanks for the awesome show 401
Yes sir cause that check ain’t cutting it

Damn that firefighter joke in the beginning of the video lol. Also 401 does look like a Mexican Viking, minus the poncho turkey leg, patrol car door, & a Viking helmet.
I WILL TELL YOU RIGHT NOW THIS TYPE OF STUFF NEEDS TO COME OUT IN THE NEWS MEDIA THERE'S NO REASON A COP SHOULD BE PUT THROUGH THAT AND THEN WONDER WHY HE HAS A LAPSE IN JUDGMENT
I'm in the coast guard and the "panama" schedule is the standard schedule for land units.
I work for a non sworn campus safety department and we have 4/10s, they are nice, having those 3 days off is like a mini vacation
My agency does the Panama shift full 12s and we rotate days/nights every year unless you can exchange with another wanting your shift
I will be starting the ohio State Highway Patrol soon. Your videos helped me a lot.
I applied for police cadet training but I didn’t get in. You definitely inspired me to take my first step tho
Hey love the videos! Could you do one on police reserves? I’ve heard little about it but am super curious! Thanks!
Loved 3rd shift hated having a court notice in my mailbox. Plus I lived 45 minutes from the center I worked at and I didn't leave the metro area. The drive home was always the worst part of the long night into sitting waiting to see if the cases was going to trial or in most cases they work a deal because they have 3 other cases and they bundled them all on your time. But you did get court pay 😳
Love it, got recommended this a week after it was uploaded. Thanks RUclips
Make that 13 days after 🤦🏼♂️
Worked nights on patrol for nearly 13 years. Gas station food, staying up all day after working to attend events, having to go to court after working all night, attending training after working all night, trying to manage a healthy lifestyle in general was a major challenge. Definitely makes for low quality of life. Props to all Leo's who pound pavement on the graveyard shift. It's rough after a while.
Been a night nurse for 7 years. It is all true. Fatigue is the worst. So glad I do not have to appear in court between Shifts. Stimulants (caffeine and energy drinks, nicotine and other things) complicate the problems associated with night shift. Diet, exercise, and a good days sleep, and one cup of coffee maybe two will serve you well. To all of you on the job, Thanks, stay safe, especially all my 🧛♀️ 🧛♂️.
Great video!
i felt this so muchh.great video
Thank you so much to our police 🚔 ❤️ ♥️ 💙 💕
7:11. Thanks for the information.
The benefits of working graves, is less admin out, and the first part of the shift is usually when all the good calls come in, then after around 2-3 am it slows down so you can take care of reports, swing shift, you are usually busy the whole shift, and 90 % of the time you have to stay over shift to either finish reports or help out with calls if its really busy, i felt the bad thing with swings was that it felt like you didn't have much off time, but the good part was that you did stay busy so your shift felt like it flew by. In my career I loved graves, I've always been more of a night person anyway, so for me it was more natural. When your new or just coming up the seniority ladder, sometimes you just had to take what's left during shift bid, and the majority of the time its either swings or graves, most of the senior officers will take days, so they can have the mostly regular hours, unless your department just does a full patrol rotation, then you get to work all the shifts during the year, depending how often the rotation cycle was.
For any of you thinking about LE, its a great career, I enjoyed my 21 years, and for those on the job, stay safe, everyone goes home at the end of shift.
Keep up the great work
I wasn't law enforcement but security for the local university PD. We were around the clock. I worked 11 pm- 7am for 2 years. It sucked. But at least we chose our shifts each year so I was locked in for a year.
Edit: I never really got used to sleeping during the day. I did however get really good at functioning with only a few hours of sleep. I'm a teacher now. I don't miss shift work at all.
Here in Sweden it’s normal to work 3 shift with rotation. Some time you work night and then evening.
Outstanding video
Started out on nights and it was brutal! We do work 10 hour shifts. Day shift is 0600-1600 , afternoons is 1530-0130 and midnights is 2000-0600. Afternoons is the best! A lot of action and the best with sleep. Court is pain in the ass with midnights especially when you get done at 0600 but have court at 0930…. Be done by like 1100 to then go home and return again for court at 1430 to then be done and go back to sleep again 🤣 nothing is worse then broken up sleep!
Traffic Division here I work 4 10's and 3 Off Monday-Thursday and off all the weekends.
Finallllllllly! Hahaha welcome back good sir!
Thankfully our court secretary gives each shift a set court for each month. So when you give a summons or make an arrest you just put down that day. And it's always a day we already work.
Warrants are the only thing we may have to stick around for, if your on nights.
The Panama schedule is the best I love it.
hope you doing well mate much love from down under
I work for the Georgia Department of Corrections and we work 12+ hour shifts just because of how short staffed we are or what happened the night before if inmates fault each other. It really sucks.
I work in teletype and on night shifts, granted im sitting and not having to patrol but nights can be crazy
In Chicago we have 3 shifts. And a special 4th shift. The special shift is only 10hrs. All the other ones are 8hrs. I can’t wait to be a police officer. Right now as a civilian I work overnights. Hopefully I can stay overnight
i work 8 hour days, with a massive department we are able to have 6 different shifts that all overlap each other. and our court always has us on call due to the extremely high amount of cases it sees everyday.
Do you enjoy it ?
