Geoff, I can honestly say, I don't watch absolutely all of your videos, but some of the things you said in this video were genuinely thought-provoking, great video, one of your finer pieces, in my opinion,
It made me rethink what it means for an anime to emotionally impact me through visuals alone. I used to simply put the animation up to the collective efforts of a studio, but I can see how some animation sequences carry the sole emotion of a single lone animator somewhere out there. It's an art onto itself, how a single frame can carry the signature and emotion of an animator. How even if that someone works in a different studio, with a different budget, you can still somehow tell that the animator whose emotions once touched you are trying to do it again.

For question 2, each member of a production committee is ranked based on how much they invested in the anime project, and the returns are proportional to their investment. So the first name on the list, the one leading the production will most probably get the largest slice of the return.
Of course circumstances vary between each production, depending on marketing, merch and events (there are a wide variety of revenue sources for an anime project) but my impression is that it doesn't stray too much from the above. From the outside there's no way to know the exact proportion between each member however.

Shinji Hashimoto's sakuga work is top tier. That scene in the third episode of FLCL where they are on the school roof because of that alien that is controlling Ninamori while Canti comes to the rescue is so beautifully made. He also worked on my favorite animated film, Tekkonkinkreet and that sakuga work was also stunning.

What a brilliant video! You succinctly put into words something I've always loved about anime, that I couldn't find the words to describe myself. Sakuga truly is core to what makes anime so magical, because, as you say, they can make the worlds and characters of their series tangible and believable in an artful, human way that lets not just my eyes, but my whole mind believe the impossible for a few moments. Other animation styles can evoke something similar in me, but rarely in such a personal way - in my opinion.
When Luffy uses his Gatling punches on Rob Lucci in One Piece's Enies Lobby arc is a moment that's gonna stick in my mind until the day I die. The desperation, the up until then seemingly insurmountable odds, the insane pressure of the situation and how that moment releases all of it - the animators made sure I felt every fist impact in the very depths of my soul.

as someone who is kind of backed into a corner and needing to animate something for school, this video did wonders and made me think back to a lot of separate pieces of anime I have seen over the year. I hope when I do get my shit together I can honestly take all I have seen during this video into account when making the animation I need to. My favorite sakuga is the sequence that plays as kyons final instance of deja vu hits at the end of the endless eight

I like this deep dive into the power of animation! I know you tend to stick to the land of the rising sun, but I would LOVE to see analysis of the art western countries bring.

One of the first anime I watched was your lie in April and just seeing a snippet of that scene instantly made me tear up. I attribute a lot of my love of anime to your channel and the deeper examination of the shows and moments that I knew and loved for some reason. Thank you and keep up the good work!

Some animators have twitter accounts where they put some of their individual work. More people should check that stuff out

Indeed. Both Okiura, Toshiyuki Inoue, Takeshi Honda, Mitsuo Iso, Tetsuya Nishio and other realist animators just ain't human for animating such astounding and high fidelity detailed sakuga animation. Their realistic character movement that can be easily mistaken as rotoscoped like Jin-Roh and their effects and everything are so volumetric and what blows my mind is the dragon in Maquia i think was animated by Inoue, it's just how well animated the hand drawn dragon is from the volume and shading that others mistakenly think it's CG. Even Inoue posted the gengas of that scene on his Twitter account but you can spot and rewatch it again on SAKUGABOORU.

I agree with your statement, that growing up, what i didnt understand back then were sakuga were what grabbed me most about watching anime. Gradually, as i started becoming a fan, i started appreciating authors, studios, directors, actors and learning their names before the animators who many do not know even today. Unsung and underpaid, but such is the life of artists, as history has shown. I hope this video is the least we can give them as thanks for many great and inspiring memories.

So, Sakuga is the Anime equivalent of "spending your Special effects budget on one big episode per season", while using stock footage the rest of the time.
Just instead of money, it is time budget. And the time is split more across episodes, the focussed in 1-2 episodes.

Pretty much, and the other animation style is basically the same as video file compression, if 2 frames are 90% the same you only need to store the data for what changed and reference in from the previous frame. Of course this realistically means make a copy of the last frame in photoshop and edit it slightly. I'm sure there are tons of tricks, like drawing transparency regions and place the clasic anime blury line background from the stock vault behind it. All to save time so you can draw every detail in that cinematic final battle, or every pore on that hideous monster.
