I used to have the majority of my holdings in ETH because I listened to all the “influencers” who said that eth will outperform btc. Now thanks to this channel I’m 100% in BTC.
I can't believe I used to be an eth maxi. I was really taken in by all that nonsense about Ethereum being Internet 2.0.
great video Matt, the depravity goes deep with ETH. It is unfortunate that people fell for such a ridiculous proposal. There is no way that a classical computer could simulate quantum computing (we would already have results if that was the case). We are currently no where close to having enough quantum bits to crack SHA256 -- there are estimates of needing 1.9 billion qubits to solve within 10 mins. Google is meanwhile dealing with instability issues around decoherence and a host of other errors using 70 qubits. Even if they succeed a hard fork of BTC would be inevitable and a switch to SHA3-256 on the cards.
Admittedly, I don't understand quantum computing as well as I should, but I don't see how cracking SHA256 mining is even possible. Breaking ECC seems reasonable (and also a much more concerning threat, as pointed out at 3:29 ), and going from a SHA256 hash to a matching input also seems reasonable. But there are a virtually unlimited number of valid inputs for every hash output of SHA256. It seems like a logical contradiction to say that one could go from a hash to a valid input block, when there are a virtually infinite number of valid (from SHA256's perspective) inputs for a given hash which are invalid blocks from the perspective of Bitcoin's consensus rules. Does anyone know of some literature on how quantum could be applied to cracking Bitcoin mining difficulty specifically (as opposed to just generating some random input that goes with a given hash)?
ETH should have been considered a security AGES ago. Even when it was under POW.

0:42 you forgot your add that after conversion from work to stake model the fees stayed insanely high to benefit the premined insiders even further. Look at all other ETH forked stake chains their fees are 100x lower or more.
I really enjoy your videos! At some point could you make a video about cashu, ecash and enuts? How it works and maybe the usecases and differences to lightning. Or also about some technical things in lightning: like what is a macaroon or hex. I can´t really find good info on that which is easy to understand as a non IT person ^^ Thank you! :))

Matthew, what are the implications of a coin becoming a security? Is it that the issuing company gets sued and the coin then becomes a security of said company like a stock? Or is there more to it? I've heard a lot of people talk about how these shipcoins are securities, but I still don't understand the larger implications of this. Basically, what happens after the SEC wins these cases?

WHATS YOUR OPINION ON TOKENISATION OF REAL WORLD ASSETS ? what my opinion was ethereum and solana are trail and error to test how work this technology because backed by nothing but tokenisation of real world assets backed by real world assets , stocks, T Bills, real estate but there is lot of hurdles whats your point of view ?
This might be a silly question, but shouldn't multisig be able to protect you from quantum computing? At least it should be much harder to get your funds that way.

the people who moved to PoS so they could centralize their power and make more fiat are the exact type of people running the FED, and the greedy, self centered type of people i want to avoid in my life. ETH moving to PoS was actually my true orange pill moment, so thank you ETH for pushing me 100% into Bitcoin.
How ironic that Vitalik sought to abstract essential hardware computing functions of quantum into software. He did the same thing when he moved essential hardware security functions in Eth from PoW to PoS. The only difference is the failure of the former was readily apparent to everyone much faster than the latter.

I wonder if you could make a video about seed phrases? Is it not possible for someone to just pick any 12 or 24 words from the BIP39 list and if he's in luck the list could be the same as the seed phrase of an actual wallet?

Its looking like Consensus is going to fight like hell in the courts to get Ethereum labeled as a commodity. I think they might actually be successful in getting it done. Especially since there is already a futures ETF for Ethereum. So as much as we hate all these scammy proof of stake protocols, I wouldn't put money that this is going to go down like Bitcoiners hope. Just being honest. I think the government slept on this too long.

Everyone that really defends ETH say the same thing,
"Its not as good as Bitcoin, but it is a technology that can do different things that Bitcoin can't do."
Last time I checked, ALL technology companies are registered as SECURITIES. But for some weird reason if you attach a token to it and call it "crypto", then you can spin up a coin, pump it, dump it, and wash rinse repeat.
I don't really know what quantum computers can allegedly do beyond Shor's algorithm. That algorithm won't transfer to SHA-256. It's a factorization algorithm for large numbers. So it is a threat to RSA. I don't know about ECC. I imagine bitcoin will adopt a more powerful encryption protocol than secp256k1 used for bitcoin wallets.

Matthew the medium page you linked to had a video of 19 year old Vitalik explaining quantum computing, elliptic cryptography, hyperbolic topology etc, reminding me that he is a genius worth investing in.

Off topic but why did Satoshi decide on 51%? Why not 85%? A simple majority is more likely than say 85%.
As for the SEC, I am not so sure because Hongkong has approved an ETH ETF.
It's not that Satoshi explicitly chose 51%. That number is a side effect of the network choosing to write the block to the chain with the most hash power.
It's just how proof of work works. In practice, you need a lot more than 51% of the hash to pull off an effective 51% attack

Really appreciate this video. I never bought eth something always seemed off and to tell the truth, i never understood it. BTC makes so much more sense to me as a store of wealth and its been a great ride. Its also exciting to know with the capped supply BTC will be going up infinitely through time.

It seems Vitalik has made it his life's mission to be the fungal-sludge on the back of the Bitcoin. You have to admire the fact he realized Bitcoin was important early on, too bad he couldn't figure out how to leverage that in an honorable way. Even if ETH , SOL , etc. are Securities. Why does it matter ? There are thousands of ETFs that hold Securities.

I've always thought ETH was a titanic. Slow, weighed down. Defeats the very idea of forward innovation which should be fast, low cost, secure. ICP seems to be a much more realistic framework for development built for Web Assembly, reverse gas model etc.

A quantum computer could bring down the entire US banking system and government servers and nuclear launch codes first. Only early BTC addresses are most vulnerable. If we see Satoshi's coins move, you can assume that the world now has a quantum computer

I don't particularly care about eth but I notice you always frame price charts right after a giant pump and say "look how much it's gone down in value". That's pretty deceptive and Bitcoin isn't immune to the same type of cherry picking. Besides, why are you so preoccupied with price action if you think it's a revolutionary technology?
My chart is sized to include the November 2021 top when ETH moved to proof of stake. Not trying to cherry pick, but it's undeniable that the move has been bad for ETH

Everytime I've checked a chart you show you frame it way to close.
