  • Part of the model-making process is in trying to keep your meshes down to the minimum number of polygons while maintaining the look of whatever you're making. In this tutorial I show how I alter the meshes of a wheel after texturing each section so as to keep the overall poly count down.

Like all of your tutorials, a veritable trove of very good information.
    Excellent, ...thank you so much.

Thanks. I wasn't sure that they were of help as yours is the first comment. The loco is now finished and I'll be releasing it shortly.

What scale do you use to ensure your models are scaled properly? I've been planning on making models myself and I would like to know.

Essentially the scale is 1:1. This ensures your model is the correct size when exported into Trainz which, again, is 'real world' size.
For units, I use the feet and decimal inches measurement option, just going into metric when I need to work out the distance a wheel travels each revolution.
You select the measurment units you wish to use in 'Customise/Units Setup'. This gives you a pop-up where you just choose which one you want to use.
Once that's done, I scale whatever plans I have accordingly. For example, if the model is 20 foot long then that's the length of plane I use onto which I paste the plan. And of course you have to set the height so that there is no distortion. That's basically what I do in the tutorial.
Hope that makes it a bit clearer.

It applies to everything that you want to make for Trainz regardless of the type of model. You set a wagon which is 20ft long as exactly that, a building which is 50ft wide, 50ft deep and 30ft high exactly the same. You always use real world dimensions otherwise you end up with models that are too small or too big for Trainz.

      @@ing4trainz Ok then. Makes sense.

    Great! Where can get gmax?

As far as I can see, you can download Gmax from this site. You will also need the Trainz Asset Creation plugin from the Auran/N3V site.

As always, make sure you have virus checking turned on just in case.
