"Household Gods" by Harry Turtledove and Judith Tarr, was a "be careful of what you wish for" based on that idea. In short, a woman who worked at a law firm had one of the worst days of her life. As she got ready for bed, she placed her hand on one of the busts of Liber and Libera and "Believing the past to be a better time" she made a wish. The Roman deities, elated someone had "prayed" to them granted her wish...
5. In Snow White, another fact that was missing is that the evil queen didn't try to kill Snow White once but three times, the first was lacing her corset too tight and the second was combing her hair with a poison brush. The first two the dwarves were able to save her from but not the poisoned apple. Additionally, Snow White was awakened from her "slumber" when the prince's people accidentally dropped her casket on the stairwell hoisting her casket up the stairs which caused the piece of the poisoned apple to dislodge from her throat. 4. In Cinderella, the step sisters had their eyes pecked out by magic doves and were forced to live their lives as blind beggars for the rest of their lives. 2. In Rapunzel, the evil witch cut off her hair and sent her to the wilderness due to finding out the affair between her and the prince. After being blinded by the bushel of thorns, the prince wanders into the wilderness when he finds out Rapunzel had twins, she cries into his eyes, he is able to see again, they head back to his kingdom and lived happily ever after. 1. Actually, Sleeping Beauty was awakened when one of the babies suckled the splinter underneath her fingernail from the spindle she pricked her finger on which woke her up. Overall, amazing video! 👍
The version I remembered had the bit of apple being dislodged when the Prince up and decided to make out with Snow White’s year old corpse. Because that’s a normal thing normal people do. “Ooo! What’s this? A strange woman’s dead body? LET ME SNOG IT!”
The Little Mermaid is another. In the original, she must endure pain as if walking on knives after giving up her voice. She fails to win the heart of the prince so dies in the end.
Excatly she turns into foam onto the sea which symbolises her going to Heaven, some people might argue that is a happy ending because she goes to heaven however I hate the original ending.
The story of the Pied Piper is where we get the saying 'paying the piper'. And something to make the Pied Piper story extra spooky? It may very well have been based on true events. Hamelin IS a real place and at some point in the 1200's something did happen that took ALL the children. There is a stained glass window made in memory of the event, on top of that, in the town records, going back to as early as 1384 is a record that says 'It is 100 years since our children left'. Something did happen to the children of Hamelin in the 1200's, something that seemingly took ONLY the children. But we have no idea what it is (or at least nothing that could be agreed upon).
He has no conscience because he killed it within the first 30 pages hahahahha Also at least the story makes a bit more sense, since in the disney version Pinocchio isn't really bad at all, he's just naive, which makes sense considering the fact that he was born yesterday, but in the original story he actually has to learn to be good
None of this surprises me, my mom had a philosophy about children not being overly sheltered from the darkness of the world, as long as there where a adult to consult and comfort you after seeing or hearing something scary. So she read me these versions in the daytime, and something much more fun and light at bedtime.
More parents should do this so that kids don't grow up thinking that the "real world" is fair and just but very complicated, dark and there is rarely a happy ending. But these stories also help get kids through the bad times so....
@@SerenaSilverMoon it has indeed guided and supported me in my life, i was never told that a pet went to a farm or life was going to be all roses, i grew up feeling safe because I knew the dangers and therefore how to deal with them

I had heard most of them, but those I heard had some differences from these: Sleeping beauty: In the one I heard it was a prince that found her, but as in your version he did the same thing and then left her. She gave birth to 2 children, and here it's different again. Because she does not wake up when they start to feed, but when one of them see the thorn stuck in her finger and remove it. At the same time the prince have now become the king, afraid what would happen if someone found out what he did, he went back to sleeping beauty to kill her. But when he came back, he found her awake and feeding her children. Seeing that, he could not kill her, and instead took her back to the castle with him and married her. Sow White: I think I heard the same version here. The only thing that it also mentioned was that the girl was only 9 years old.....
If you've ever read the original story of Mary Poppins, it is a very dark story. Disney changed it. In Travers's semi-autobiographical book, Aunt Sass, released in 2014, she says Poppins is based, in part, on her austere great-aunt Helen Morehead or "Aunt Ellie" who had a "tall, gaunt, graceless frame, a grim face with a long upper lip that curled at the corners when she smiled, and a voice like the Father Bear's
1.Even as a kid I always remembered the hunter part as *always* being a part of the story and was weirded out by the exclusion in some versions. I saw it as the Queen being so evil and narcissistic that she didn't even consider that the hunter might have a conscience and wasn't totally ok with murdering an innocent girl. 2. The sleeping beauty one is just plain *horrifying* tbh
hey matt you made a huge part of my childhood, i would watch you when i was 8 or 9 now i’m 17 and found you once again from my watch later. So many memories came back from seeing you. glad your doing fine matt
I don’t know if this is true but: The Pied Piper may be about the Children’s Crusades, during the Crusades alot of people would decide to go and try to reclaim the holy land before the actual Armies with soldiers did, one such was made up of children, they were unsuccessful, they ended being enslaved by North Africans. Speaking of North Africans they relied on slavery so much that one of their countries Mauritania was the last to abolish slavery in 2007.
The version of the Piper (Rattenfänger von Hameln - rat catcher of Hamlin) I heard as a child had a mountain open up with the piper leading all the children through the crack. All except for one who had a crippled leg and wasn't fast enough so the mountain closed before the child could reach it. It weirdly made you feel bad for the child that was left behind to tell the tale. It's also said that the story has a real life background but people are not sure what actually happened (a plague, the children moving to other parts of the country, military recruitment).
grew up in Germany and heard many of these gruesome origins. Yet even as a child I didn´t find them bad because they happened to the bad guys and us children we felt they deserved what they got!!! Btw you left out the "frog king" where originally the princess didn´t kiss the frog but threw him to the wall whereafter he transformed back great vid. though
In the Snow White story, I remember hearing about how the jealous Evil Queen who tried to assassinate Snow White wasn’t her stepmother; she was actually her own birth mother! And, Snow White was even younger in the original story than in the remakes. The Snow White we knew from Disney was about 14, but the original Snow White was around 9 or 10.
The original sleeping beauty has such a terrible message. It's OK to take advantage on an unconscious woman. I'd be angry if I woke up giving birth to babies knowing that someone did something while I was unconscious.
I'm so glad to be watching these again, they haven't been coming across my feed till recently. Please do nursery rhymes next if you haven't already. @lissie was correct on how scary they can be

Fairy tales were not originally meant to be what they are today, They were meant to actually scare children to teach them the horrible lessons of life. I'm one of your older subs who grew up with as they called them 'old-world' grandparents (meaning grandparents of Europe before WWII) so never heard the sweet fairy tales till I went to school.
Hey budd, hope you're doing better than back after you moved. I can only try to understand the pressure you might have been feeling trying to impress or fulfill people only looking for immediate endorphins. Mental health is so important and you gotta take care of yourself sometimes before you can take care of business or anything else. they will appreciate whatever you can do. You're blessed, just keep that in mind.
The Pied Piper tale is actually more messed up by the fact that it was likely based on a real story. While not much information is known, there is a entry in the Hamelin’s town records dating back to 1384, which states “It is 100 years our children left.”
I knew all these facts lol and it still didn't ruin my childhood cuz I had the Brother's Grimm version. In Snow White, it was her own mother that wanted her dead and she choked on the apple (dead) that was then dislodged from her throat when the prince found her. In Repunzel, she had relations with the prince and the witch found out about the pregnancy that caused her to push the prince, she also told Repunzel that in order to regain her beauty, she'd have to kill the prince.
When you stopped RUclips, I removed the subscription. YT just dropped this in my feed today. So happy to see you back. Now, if you will excuse me, I need to go catch back up.
when i was a kid, my mama told me a story i think about 'the little mermaid' something about her trading her fins for legs, but it felt like walking on glass and nails or something along those lines... ya guys heard of that one ?
Yes, in the original story every step causes her pain. She also fails to get the prince to fall in love with her. He marries another princess. The Sea Witch promises to change her to a human if she kills the prince. The mermaid can't bring herself to do it. At the end of the story she is turned into seafoam. The original tale was a lesson for children to not be too ambitious. Stay in your place and do not try to climb up the social ladder.
