What does John Longstreth really have going for him besides speed and endurance? All of his fills and patterns consist of very basic straight sticking, even though he does do good at making that 1 dimensional approach somewhat interesting. Seems like people would rather be a wannabe Gene Hoglan since he mixes things up more in ways that enhance the riffs and make the songs more memorable. Like his work with Death for example... On a side note, I wish Richard Christy and Sean Reinert were still playing extreme metal. I'm not hearing anything close to that these days.
Haha, very astute assessment! Sean Reinert is one of my favorite drummers of all time! He reminds me of Carter Bouford in so many ways! You seem like a very intelligent person with, in my opinion, excellent taste in music.
