      @@Rubylove48
      Meryl described Nic as being a stallion, work horse---to have stamina like she's never seen; to hold a high octane scene of emotion take after take, after take---which can go on for hours upon hours, upon days, upon months.
      She describes Nic to be driven with love for the craft of being an artist (which is exactly how Nic describes her relationship to her job). ...to have incredible discipline that has gotten her where she is---to Mastery.
      The fact that Meryl, "One of the Greatest Actresses of her Generation" agreed to present the award speaks volumes.
      Meryl refers, repeatedly, to Nic's range of work as an actress on film and television, producer; and, as a philanthropist.
      Meryl used the term "reckless" in full-circle to define Nic's abandon to self, as she encapsulates the personalities of each new character---as a wild horse stallion cannot be harnessed; but, just goes; driven. ...abandon, as we have all witnessed Nic deliver performances that are uncomfortable, raw, devastating, heartbreaking, scary, exuberant and joyous. She has a wheelhouse of emotions that she brings to every take.
      Lastly, Meryl's words convey awe in Nic's talents, as to baffling even herself---for tools and range she uses.
      I'm not particularly a Kidman fan; but, I've probably seen most of the stories she's told. Meryl's tribute was an honor---one to be covetted---even if all she did was show up and hand over the award. Meryl isn't just "one of the greatest actresses of her generation;" she's one of the greatest actresses that ever lived---in all of history.

    Real talent is not threatened by real talent. That's become obvious to me. Look at Meryl and Nicole. Meryl need not take a back seat to anyone in this field; she's been the gold standard for some time. Yet she really and truly finds inspiration and sometimes awe among her colleagues. Like Nicole Lovely, lovely speech. :)

    What comes across in these speeches is how deeply loved and respected Nicole is.
    She is a beautiful soul and her inner beauty is reflected in the people she surrounds herself with.
    As a woman who divorced a very narcissistic and cruel husband, her story gives me hope that one can heal and find true love.
    I’m happy for the life she has created for herself.

  • @Ozymandi_as

    At the risk of being banal, her execution of these panegyrics she's called on to deliver from time to time is always sensationally good. Not just a list of hollow superlatives, but a vivid portrait with just enough detail to give it substance, a balance of light and shade to give it depth, shot through with humour and gravitas to bring her subject to life. Her pacing and timing is superb, she satirizes her own reputation so as not to overshadow her subject, and the whole thing is elegant and effortless. Who knew Meryl Streep could knock out a speech this well?

      Live your life
      Work hard

      Run your own race
      Serve God

    • @yvonneplant9434
      @yvonneplant9434 6 месяцев назад

      She's great. But, no. That goes to Bette Davis or Katherine Hepburn for Americans. Or a bunch of British actresses who are still alive or one who has died(Glenda Jackson).

    • @Ozymandi_as
      @Ozymandi_as 6 месяцев назад +2

      @@yvonneplant9434 Bette and Kate were great movie stars of their generation, but as actresses, the roles were not available to match the range of Streep; and their style was somewhat declamatory, where Meryl has opened windows through which to see the inner lives of her characters. Can you imagine Sophie played by the grandes dames of the golde era? As for the great dames of the Britain, they tend to a more theatrical approach which can indeed be arresting, but better? Perhaps had Judie Dench not started her film career in her 60s, then she might have challeged Meryl, but Smith is really a briiliant character actress, Mirren is interesting but uneven, Thompson the same, and while Glenda Jackson was undoubtedly a talent, and a better actress than an MP (which is not to say her choice was anything but admirably principled), but her adjacent oscar wins, in the first short passage of her career were something of a fluke.
      I am, as you might guess, British myself, and I have great affection for all these actresses, but I don't think even they would seek to usurp Streep's crown. Superlatives like 'greatest' provide for a diverting discussion, but are of little meaning where objective comparison of like things is impossible. Acting is not the same as Athletics. Legacy might make for a reasonable metric to compare, but it can only be assessed retrospectively, and from a suitable distance; but even then, every era has its distinctive voices. So the exercise is artificial, and should not be given too much importance. So, in a spirit of gaiety, I sayStreep has given some wonderful performances, and has been active and in demand as a leading actress across six decades thus far, which is somewhat unusual for either sex, but unique among actresses. She broke the curse of 40, and for that alone, she will be an icon for the ages. She also elicited a desription as 'the most overrated actress in Hollywood' from a sitting President of the United States, which will surely go down as one of the most idiotic and petty things that even he ever said. Her eloquent and impassioned critique of his moral turpitude was piercingly accurate and powerfully delivered, and it added more lustre to her storeyed career and overall 'rating'. It's got to be Meryl.

      @@Rubylove48He didn’t “bring her to Hollywood”. She first gained International fame from the movie Dead Calm. That was a great movie & yes, that’s where Tom said he saw her BUT, back then he didn’t have the clout to just say, “This person is doing my movie, no matter what you say.” I worked in LA for 20 years (mostly as an agent but I dabbled in casting, management & post production) & I guarantee you that Nicole had to do the full rounds of interviews & auditions before she was cast in Days of Thunder.

    • @Ozymandi_as
      @Ozymandi_as 6 месяцев назад +1

      We wouldn't be having this conversation if she would just get on and win an Oscar or two. But you know Glenn, always the bridesmaid ... and seemingly fumbles the catch every time she is tossed the bouquet. The floral posy has been bundled into her hands several times, only to slip from her grasp somehow. Sadly, that can only happen so often before others are selected for preferment. If Nicole exemplifies multiple ideals of equine breedstock, as Meryl rather oddly suggests in her speech, then dear Glenn seems fated to be fêted as - and I mean this in a kind way - one of the also-rans. The aswer to a supplementary question, the nominee not bolded, the face whose name is just out of reach, the asterisk (see footnotes) in any history but her own. It's a little bit sad really, but perhaps the people who decide these things will at some point yield to pressure and give her a participation prize, in recognion of a lifetime of punctuality on set, and sometimes turning out better than expected. The presenter of her 'achievement' award, however, will definitely not be Meryl Streep, who is likely to have a prior engagement that day in any case, for which regrets will be sent promptly. La Stupenda, as she's affectionately know among her friends at the Academy, is contractually limited to honouring A-listers only, lest she sully the value of her own brand. Which is not to say that she isn't fond of Glenn, because she is, very much so, and always has a kind word for her when their paths do occasionally cross; but Glenn's behaviour can be a liitle tiresome in these encounters, so Meryl's people discretely see to it that they are never to be found in the same WhatsApp groups, or seated at the same dinner tables. It's just easier that way. In her heart of hearts, Glenn knows that the upper tier is beyond her, and with her plain featured face set in a mask of grim resignation, she silently accepts her lot. But it is undoubtedly difficult for when she hears idle chatter about her ungarlanded career, which out of kindness, we should all keep in mind.

    It's unfortunate to know she most likely has an ankle monitor on. A room this size of people knowing the darkness that is Hollyweird.
    That is what they pull from. Seeing and knowing what is happening to our children underground and behind the veil.
    Time to AWKEN to this disgusting energies that come together idolizing themselves and each other. I USED to really enjoy Meryl, but not now after know what they ALL know and refuse to speak out on because of fear of their life. Well then what is life worth living for keeping those secrets that will allow us to heal as a collective.

    Good God. Actors and musicians never miss a chance to garner an extra pat on the back for themselves. The ones getting these awards are VERY well paid for playing make believe in front of the camera- it's not exactly like they're curing cancer or the like. A little bit of humble pie goes a long way.

    This AFI worth nothing really. In the past they didn't give it to John Wayne, Olivia de Havilland, Charlie Chaplin, Norma Shearer, Cary Grant, Maureen O'Hara, Burt Lancaster, Joan Crawford, Robert Mitchum, Jean Simmons, Charlton Heston, Deborah Kerr, nowadays they haven't give it to Sylvester Stallone, Shirley MacLaine, Mel Gibson, Glenn Close, Kevin Costner, Sophia Loren, Richard Gere, Sally Field, and there have been recipients who mean nothing to the history of the cinema like Clooney, Roberts, Martin, and now we can add Kidman to this infamous list. Gosh, it's a pity

      I get what you’re saying- but at the same time- it’s Interesting that Meryl bring that up, brings up that phrase- during this speech about Nicole. She goes on to say some things about Nicole that we don’t often hear her say, which I find intriguing. Regardless, it is true- that Meryl IS incessantly called the best living film actor- she’s heard it a lot, we’ve all heard it a lot. So in a way it was nice to hear her address it. She’s said before that “there is no such thing as” that, too.
