One of the greatest science fiction movies of all time... The fantastic adaptation of H.G. Wells novel, the iconic Martian War Machine design, the incredible special effects and unforgettable sound effects!!!!!!!
The green pulse weapon was used heavily for the photon torpedo sound in the original series. It was also used for when He-Man transforms Cringer into Battle Cat in Masters of the Universe among many other uses.
After these sound effects were created, they became part of Paramount’s library and were frequently reused, so you definitely heard them in “Star Trek”! This movie should’ve won the other Oscars for which it was nominated, too! Always terrifying and satisfying! Peace.
These sound effects have been re-used in other productions so many times, it's hard to count. Most notably the hovering sound effect is probably best known as the Star Trek phaser sound, whereas the heat rays were used for quite a number of individual laser blasts in the original Star Wars trilogy (along with effects newly designed by Ben Burtt).
Star Wars did not have "Phasers" it had Blasters or Blaster rifles, and the X-Wing "Laser" sounds were first recorded by Lucas as hitting an electrical utility pole "guy wire" with a hammer. I saw that in a 'Making of Star Wars' documentary. (Will add a reference here if I can find one...)
My German Shepard stops what ever his doing and Literally stares at the TV during the attacks of Mars ships on Earth , A stare of Confusion I guess. That darn sound is eerie scary
It isn't just the sound effects that are amazing. For a film from the early 1950's the visual effects are impressive and still stand up better today than some of the CGI effects from more recent films
Tied for the best movie with the original "Invaders from Mars" that came on my black and white TV every Easter Sunday at 2am before "My Friend Flicka" at 4am.
I spent a long time finding out where the original Star Trek sound effects came from and here it is. My dad said that was a way of the producers saving money while producing the original Star Trek TV show. Clever.
I still love this movie. As a story it has the 2005 remake beat. And when I was little and first saw this on video these things gave me nightmares: they were ferocious, unstoppable monsters. Now I'd like to see one of these fight one of the Tripods! It kinda sparked my love for sci-fi and technology, this and Star Trek.
I think they forgot how to make scary movies after this one came out. The sound effects are absolutely terrifying, and the ships even worse! Great movie and one of the most memorable of all time!
Forty three seconds in and we beging to hear a starfleet hand phaser slowly coming up to full power. A full minute later and the photon torpedoes begin to fly. It's amazing how many times these sound effects have been used over the decades, whether in altered or original form. They hold up.
Totally awesome! I needed the sounds for the Tripod as stuck him in a game and then cut sounds into clips for the various sounds in game and the results are mind blowing as you know how loud it is. Thank you for your time and love for The War of the Worlds.

Some of the sound effects were used in other films and TV shows from Paramount studios. I'm waiting for a local restored movie theater to hold a showing of this masterpiece on the big screen. Halloween is perfect! Some years ago a group of us late 30-somethings were watching late in the evening of Halloween, smokin' n' drinking. Everytime i see the streetlights in my city i remember these alien starships making this very same sound, and it's still creepy like 30 years ago when i saw this fantastic movie on TV when i was a kid.

The movies that have tripods have always made me laugh because, why do those mechanical legs have so many joints? Each joint is a weak point in terms of engineering. You want to reduce weak points, or at least add some external cover to protect them. But no, gotta have a bunch of articulated joints because...crickets. Plus, tripods aren't the most stable if you want them to be mobile as with each step, the machine is perched on two legs and can be easily knocked over. The most stable would be a pentapod where you could easily step with two legs off the ground and three still supporting the cabin.
the fx crew initially wanted to show ray particle "legs", but it was too costly and cumbersome. a little of that shows in some of the initial footage, i think (i'll have to check
