I watched this movie for the 1st time when I was like seven and I had the same nightmare for 2 weeks straight, and there were other times where I imagined hearing the tripod horn outside my bedroom which kept me up almost all night.
I had the same experience. I saw it from behind the couch while my parents were watching it, and I was supposed to be asleep. I was fucking terrified, but mesmerised at the same time. For several weeks I had nightmare after nightmare, I couldn't stop thinking about it. We lived near an airport, and when turboprop planes are taxiing on the runways it creates a deep, loud buzzing noise that can be heard for miles away, and it sounds similar to this. When I was outside during the evening, I heard this and just about shat my pants. I was frozen in place, I couldn't move or do anything. I new it was just the planes but it reminded me of the tripods and it terrified the everlovinh shit out of me
the gunshots stopping and the ending of alarm broadcasts have to be the scariest thing for me, knowing that we've lost not only the battle, but the war as the entire human race.
Eh with the tripods being pretty much killed off due to the alien pilots not being able to stand up against the bacteria and such, I'd say Godzilla would live, but would be very VERY torn up in the end.
