Great basic overview for DMX in the film industry. It’s amazing how a tech that’s been around for years keeps evolving but is still essentially the same old 512. I’ve used DMX for everything from DJing, film sets, theater productions, Christmas light displays, interactive experiences, live music concerts, etc. And it’s not always just for lights. You can trigger all sorts of things with relays. To get started playing around with it you don’t HAVE to spend thousands of dollars, there are great ways to use cheap raspberry pi micro computers to build all sorts of DMX tools. The amount of things you can do with DMX is pretty incredible once you dip your toe in the water and start seeing what’s out there.
Grab a 20 buck dmx 512 controller off of amazon some dmx cables and some 3 pin dmx transmitters and some lights. literly all you have to do is go to each light and enter the dmx values.. Check out @dthaxton76 on tiktok to see my setup
Great episode! As a fellow Lighting Programmer, I've known Ben for years and he was a fantastic choice to have on your show! Always great seeing content that gets more people interested and educated about lighting control. Keep up the awesome work, guys! Though I admit I got a chuckle out of the thumbnail, as the Mandalorian Volume isn't driven by DMX at all haha (source: I worked on the show). But hey, gotta play that RUclips algorithm game haha.
Just as a “wow was I lucky” comment, I got to work with one of the inventors of DMX, Alan Symonds, who used to be the TD for the Harvard theaters. He was our theater consultant for our high school’s construction project and I got to work with him designing and equipping the new theater back in 2005 - 2007. Sadly, ours was his last project as he passed away suddenly of a heart attack just as ground was broken on the theater part of the project. He was a wonderful person to work with and in spite of his industry rep, he was very down to earth.
Amazing episode! Nice to see where technology is heading and all the options we’ve got today. I do both high end DMX sets and also a lot of Sidus Link Bluetooth 5.0. Can’t wait to see what’s coming in the future!!
Would be great If you Had shown the Origin of DMX, (the Event industry) and also the "Common Basis" such as the usual 3-pin-xlr connector, simple Boards, etc. Such a system can be build much much cheaper, If you inform yourself about the Basics of dmx
IF YOU SEE THIS WE USE 3 PIN DMX NOT XLR... BRUH DMX IS DIFFERNT BY THE ELECTRO MAGNETICS IN THERE. MY LIGHTS WONT WORK WITH XLR BECAUSE OF INTERFERANCE WITH MY SOUND SYSTEM.
Will the new Quasar Tubes get compatibility with Sidus Link App? Would love to use all iPad control in a single app, but aputure lights only work with Sidus link without separate device.
This takes me back to learning lighting for my high schools TV studio and theater. Those ETC ion boards were annoying to work with. Cat5 cable wtf. It’s any Ethernet cable faster than cat5, cat6a will do just fine Would be a good thing to mention DMX lines are just XLR with more pins.
I think you can start cheaper. Wires instead of Wireless. Use a free software like MA-Lighting Dot2 (512 channels free). Take an Art-Net to DMX Node for about $300 and a router for using the web interface of then dot2.
I even think film is underusing dmx, could be used for almost anything: follow focus? dmx. slider and dolly? dmx. crane operation? dmx. drone flying? dmx.
Not to be a shit poster here but I just helped on an light install for a strip club last month. Had never worked with DMX. It's honestly the most archaic analog system ever. The only reason it's still being used today is because it has been used for so long in these large industries and people in the industry don't want to learn new things. Think about it this way. A DMX cable can only contain the bandwidth of 512 channels in one universe. How much bandwidth could a single Cat-6 cable contain? Definitely a lot more than a DMX cable. And like he was saying in the video would you rather have a guy stand there and manually adjust a slider or have it programmed with keyframes in a software? Chips are so inexpensive these days that lights that contain a chipset to tell the light to do all these things would be so inexpensive and most importantly time saving and easy to install. I think it's time for change!
DMX seems outdated af. Packet bases systems seems to be much more convenient. Specially when you can use whatever programming you want to control parameters. Cable or remotely. Want to hook up lights to Twitch chat, no problem. ETC ETC:
Fun fact: you can at a smaller scale but it is not suitible at a larger scale. DMX-cables are XLR-cables but not the sound type. The cable it self is different, but the contacts are the same.
My theatre world and filmmaking world is starting to combine here.
I'm not sure what dmx is but I've heard tell it's gon give it to ya.
that joke made me lose my mind, up in here (up in here)
This video helped me Stop, Dropped, shut em down and opened up shop.
RIP DMX 😭😢😭

Totally complicated and I love every bit of it. X gon'give it to ya!
Omg yes!!! Thank you for this video- much needed- mailman analogy was great (:
Thank you so much for this, it is not an easy subject and yet you've succeeded in making your video accessible
Amazing episode! Nice to see where technology is heading and all the options we’ve got today. I do both high end DMX sets and also a lot of Sidus Link Bluetooth 5.0. Can’t wait to see what’s coming in the future!!
Well, first he stops, drops, and shuts 'em down. After that, DMX opens up shop.
Woah, woah that's typically how Ruff Ryders roll.
@@mikekazz5353 The best part is, if you ask for something, X will give it to ya'!
@atd8vii Sounds like what happens when Damien is working his shift. I try not to shop when he's on the clock cause he always gotta Bring the noize.

Great video dude...
I'm only here for the DMX rapper jokes in the comments.
Fantastic information!
I like these technical stuff 😍
I learned a lot today Thanks 😊

not even XLR with more pins, it's literally a stereo XLR, it's used for stereo everywhere.
@@sorcierlegrand7259 I’ve never seen someone run stereo XLR on 1 line but makes sense
Thanks for you kind information ❤️😉
Would love to see the Quasar Rainbows supported in Aputures SidusLink App
I guess you could say X going give is gonna give it to ya lol good video.

512 channels and still nothing to watch.
Onyx from Obsidian control systems have 4 universes for free. Also has built in pixel-maping and media server.
I even think film is underusing dmx, could be used for almost anything: follow focus? dmx. slider and dolly? dmx. crane operation? dmx. drone flying? dmx.
You should do a video on virtual sets if you haven't already
Came for the rapper...stayed for the jokes
Guess that's "Whatcha ya real want"
Second part will feature 50cent
Any chance you could give me a list of what you used to get started wirelessly
I could pay off my house with all of those ARRI SkyPanels. 12:30
"Where my dogs at?"
Ruff Ryders!
Hence proved that 512 is important number in this class😎
How's the wireless router able to control lights just by being connected to the hog?

Rest in peace DMX
I wanna see part 512!
Next topic: what is the funtion of DIGITAL IMAGING TECHNICIAN ???
DIT's have the scariest job on set....safe guarding the footage.
I work on live stages. Did not realize that movie people use DMX too.
512 part series. That joke large byte of comedy.

Two mins in and you drop another ad?
The Sidas Link App is a godsend after seeing this video!!

Depends on the lights. There are 5-pin DMX cables
X gon' light it for you.
higher density MIDI data
GRRRRRRRRRRR
It's hard to believe that Earl Simmons invented DMX in Yonkers New York in the 1970s.
phillips hue for the win
My DMX isn't working any more
Fun. But I’d say this vid is about seven years too late 😂
I was the 666th view 🙀
Step one go to the hood
This is confusing...It’ll make u lose yalls mind...up in here UP IN HERE!!
This video should be called "How *not* to set up your microphone." You're talking into the top and your gains are off.
Lovely lovely dam it I am to poor :(
Rapper.
Wish is would just work with Sidus link…
I have no idea the dude’s a train wreck
Gon give it to ya!!!
seems overly complicated
Rip dmx
This channel has evolved from guerilla filmmaking to high budget stuff. It's good content just not realistic at times.
It’s just to understand what these things are
PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A ADVANCED SETUP NOT BASIC AT ALL
The least indy thing ever haha.
