Sabbath was originally a blues band, and this is one of the best examples. Slow this down several beats and suddenly you’re in Mississippi!
Yeah you can tell Iommi is just on the verge of finding his Iconic sound.
Yeah, I had made much the same comment during the live show. They often seem to have a hard time making up their minds about whether they like a song or not when they can't fit it into a neat genre or time period. Personally I would classify this one as "Blues Heavy Metal." ;)
I said something similar years ago. But I was gettin' more New Orleans.
@@sagittarius420cheefie The Mississippi area includes NOLA. It's where it ends or starts.
😄
Bill Ward on the drums, jazz trained and a very underrated drummer.
Very!!!
Underrated? Not at all.
1 of the best of all time!
"Underrated"??? Not from where I'm sittin -- he'd have only John Bonham ahead of him in my book! 😁
Music needs Bill Ward on all the drums
This is a showcase for drummer Bill Ward's magic. He's the wizard of this song....and a wizard among all drummers.
Totally agree. No need for my impending eloquent comment (no doubt). I was thinking of Ian Paice, as another underappreciated drum wizard.
All these years and never thought of that angle. Thanks.
Ward is so underrated. Bonham gets more cred but I always preferred Ward.
This is a jazz drumming explosion on steroids.
On of the greatest that doesn’t get and credit..
the timing is off on the drums for the entire song..!! And yet.. it all works.
This song is not for the average Joe just listening to rock. Bins like Black Sabbath Led Zeppelin Hendrix deep purple. They really for the musically inclined. Because the musical writing is so far advanced that things may seem like they are a jumbled mess, but in reality they’re not
Yeah. Him and Geezer Butler were one of the best rhythm sections in rock. The drumming on Symptom of the Universe is top draw.
Symptom of the universe, hand of doom, NIB, sweet leaf. Just more sabbath in general
I had no clue sweet leaf was about weed until I started getting high myself 😂
Yes please !!! Symptom of the universe is the greatest switch up in music history
@@jordanrhodes929 the bohemian rhapsody before bohemian rhapsody
@@biggusdickuss1179 dude Fr. I fucking love going from that OG thrash type to that soulful ass blues at the end. Ozzy went ham with the vocals
Basically a drum solo with a 3 chord riff grafted on top. Bill Ward is a unique skinsman.
That is Ozzy on the Harmonica. One of my favorite Sabbath songs. Keep the reviews coming, great work.
Snowblind is another great Sabbath track you guys could check out.
And supernaught
@@JawsVader1970 supernaught by Ministry
or 10000 ft mc jesus
Never thought about how the harmonica leads the song. Brilliant! This song is so chaotic.
The wizard is the harmonica
Ozzy Osborne the Singer did the Harmonica
Everyone who commented about the excellent fantastic drumming of Bill Ward is 100% correct and spot on. You can hear Billy Ward giving it his all on drums.
Bill Ward just pounding the drums like they owe money. Love it. The wizards is such a cool song.
By the way Lex, love that shirt you got on
Yes you nailed it when you said, "It's just so... RAW." EXACTLY! This song just freaking rocks.
After The Beatles I'd say they were the most important rock band of all time. They invented heavy metal in one fell swoop, and their influence can be found in every heavy metal band since.
You are absolutely correct Justin Black Sabbath invented heavy-metal in the year 1970
@@YedMan01 I lent him the anvil and the hammer
The Beatles are a joke.
@@juicifer333 Helter Skelter (1968) doesn't sound like a joke to me.
The Sabbath song everyone forgets till they hear it again . . early Sabbath is the best . . .
This is a great tune ,but Bill Ward killed it on the skins.
That whole first album was 'raw' as we witnessed the birth of real heavy metal with its release What you need to do is listen to the suite/jam on side 2. Try this suite: A Bit of Finger/Sleeping Village/Warning. This suite will blow your mind and you will hear Tony Iommi in full fury as he marks his territory and for the very large wake in music history he was creating. Enjoy! 🎸
I would love to see Lex grooving to the guitar solo in "Warning."
@@klaptongroovemaster Me too, The entire suite that culminates with Warning is rock classic and anyone that underestimates Iommi needs to hear it. Up there with the greats, as powerful as any I have ever heard.
I love the way you worded everything...perfection...ROck ON!!
I just bought this album today. The first time I've heard it on a big hi-fi. The punchiness (is that a word?? :-)) of those drums, bass and especially that sound of the guitar tightly together is unbelievable! At high volume, it almost blew my speakers. They were a fantastic rhythm section! Very funky as well as heavy!
Welcome to the world that is Sabbath
You need bigger speakers! 😉
Been waiting for this one. One of my favourite Sabbath songs. So damn filthy, and Bill Ward seems to be a jazz drummer that stumbled into the wrong studio one day. What a monster.
Please do Supernaut!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!
Or, Planet Caravan.
(It's super mellow)
@@gertrudelaronge6864 yes! Planet Caravan and Changes are essential listening to see how well-rounded the band could really be!
I agree. Changes is a must.
Also charles bradley's version!
They need more artists like
- Charles Bradley
- Alabama shakes
- st paul and the broken bones
Thanks for spreading the magic. Rock on!
hand of doom....
Bill Ward is a trip, he pretty much does a whole drum solo through out many early Sabbath songs.
He had big shoes to compete with, with Bonham being around at that time...I know that they both were friends to one extent or the other. But honestly I think Bill was better in many ways.
@@yearginclarke Bonham with his feel, style and most of all his drum sound I would have to pick him but Ward was awesome as well.
It’s like blues but sped up
And heavy…The groove is there. Bill Ward is a phenomenal drummer and together with Ozzy on the harmonica…never gets old.
From the era when the musicians decided what songs they'd write and perform and record. This was a "deep track" that ended up becoming pretty popular.
Man that drummer killed it. The harmonica was also a nice touch. Nice sounding sound. Love it 👍
Bill Ward's syncopated drum beats are perfection on this one.
Black Sabbath truly is one of the all time greats. If you like the this you'll love everything else by them. PLEASE DO MORE!
Panterras "walk" is an ode to the wizards riff
Definitely do The Warning from Black Sabbath. If you liked this one, you’ll love the Warning.
That's a great track and a killer cover as well.
Yeah The Warning and Sleeping Village.
Oh please God play "sweet leaf". Won't regret it
I've always interpreted this as:
Wizard = Dealer
One of their best yet so under rated. Bill on drums totally kills it and Ozzy on the harmonica is pretty cool.
Lex is super! I love how she immediately reacted to Bill Ward's great drum fills and flourishes. She kills me with her vocalizations of all the instruments. An innate sense of music. She should take up an instrument. She would undoubtedly pick it up quickly, but more importantly, love it.
exactly !!
Ahh Lex! I figured you'd love Tony Iommi's incredible guitar riffs in this classic from Black Sabbath's first album. And that harp! Heavy Metal at it's finest!
This song is so Damn funky!!! Love how raw and jam session like with all the Sabbath Sound! Bill Ward killing this song.
you will be hooked after listening to the wizard after a few times...i wish i was just now discovering black sabbath for the first time.
Lex, that shirt! I had that shirt when I was a teenager. My mom hated it so much, in protest she refused to wash it. Love you guys. Keep up the great work 👍
You guys should react to…
Black Sabbath - Children of the Grave
🎸🤘
My favorite
Agreed 100%. Great song
One of my favorite songs ever.
So raw and I love a good harmonica.
Was a teenager in the 70's. There was nothing better than getting stoned and listening to Sabbath, Zeppelin, Floyd, etc.
This is a fire Black Sabbath song. Builds on you over time. Very underrated.
Man I appreciate you listening. Seriously dude. Cool stuff
When I was drunk and high I would crank this song all the time.
I was 13 the first time I heard this song....had just bought the 33 earlier that day....wasn't long till the door swung open and mom yelled.....turn that down! No headphones just an old phonograph but Ozzy still sounded GREAT!
Ward and Butler: Bill Ward (drums), Geezer Butler (bass). One of the greatest rhythm sections in rock. Both jazz fans. They are so syncopated. When Bill swings, Geezer plays straight. When Geezer swings, Bill plays straight. They take it in turns to swing it about. Just once in a blue moon do they ever swing together. Great discipline and being jazz fans helps.
One of my favorite songs, another great one of this same album is “The Warning” or NIB the ones I always go back to, I think if you liked this you’d definitely vibe with the instrumentals on The Warning.
Yes!
WARNING is a great tune but it's too long and meandering for a "reaction", if you think about it and know what I mean.
@@jhamler1 I can see how it may “linger a little too long” from other peoples point of view, but no doubt, instrumentally it’s a really mesmerizing song with a definite story to it and is for sure one of those songs for anybody who really digs the raw bluesy sounds of the band with a very jazzy twist, I only threw it out there because of her interest in the odd time signatures in the wizard, but I do see what you’re saying.
@@seanmellert7329 Yeah. I personally think that song is the highlight of their first album but... for a reaction channel to handle it? Probably not wise. Besides, Sabbath have plenty of other (shorter/catchier) gems to discuss.
@@seanmellert7329 Still too long and progressive. Let them hear Planet Caravan (just to get the hippie groove of BS for a detour) and then hit them with Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. I dunno. I'm still dying for somebody/anybody to react to THE WRIT, for chrissakes.
How lucky and blessed were we to grow up with music like this? Wouldn`t want to be young these days!!
I love Ozzy and this song!!!
Crazy I was blasting this song on the way home from work just this morning
Brad was glad that the wizard walked by
One of the best rock drummers of all time! Ozzy always finds amazing talent.
Ozzy didn’t find Bill, Bill and Tony found Ozzy. This was before ozzy went solo.
Geezer and Bill are a jazz rhythum section. This Jazz- metal at its inception!
The guys in Black Sabbath were from Birmingham, England--a tough steel factory town. Guitarist Tony Iommi referred to it as the kind of place where you ended up either working in a factory, or joining a gang.
Don't be surprised by the harmonica--Sabbath's members were students of Blues music. In fact, before "Heavy Metal" became the universally accepted term for this type of hard rock, bands like Sabbath were sometimes described as "Atomic Blues". I wish that term had stuck.
Incase U Guys were not aware, the harmonica at the start, is sampled by cypress hill for "AINT GOIN OUT LIKE THAT", so u may have heard this tune before.
Love how Lex is so into ROCK! Love her freckles😍 and her t-shirt. This is one of my favorite songs from Black Sabbath🤘 and so is for my 6 years old daughter. She loves the harmonica in it. ❤
One thing that helps understand the lyrics of the song is they were big nerds. Sprinkled throughout their music is sci-fi and fantasy references, more specifically this song is about Gandalf from lord of the rings
bill ward played the sax on this -and ozzy the drums , keith emerson the synth
My favorite Sabbath song.
I could feel the smile growing on my face when I watched this. Always loved this tune!
I am so so glad I was brought up on this music.
Lex is so fun!
Ozzy's voice was crazy good back then.
I agree Pete Ozzie’s voice was the best when he was young
this song makes my spine tingle
This song is like blues but with a raw ass guitar sound & some aggressive drumming. Sabbath were truly legends
Love the facial expressions on Lex! Her head movements and lip action is so great! She needs to go to a rock show!
Great song 🎧 from that time was very hard to find this type of music on the radio never find the music
A favorite. Had the vinyl as a kid.
Never can go wrong with Sabbath
Tha harmonica and everything and everyone else is this song is trying to keep up with those damn drums. He really goes off the rails in this one and I have loved it for ever and ever at this point.
Symptom of the universe!!!! Black sabbath.
Exactly correct Lex- the first time listening to it- it’s a strange one. It sounds off, yet it’s on, crazy structure, but after a few listens though OH YES.
glad the younger people are experiencing this music,, it was a great time and is pure energy for all walks of life,,,
One of my ALL Time favorite SONGS ever. Bill Ward (Drummer) goes absolute nuts on this banger
Nice reaction! This song is from the very first Black Sabbath album released in 1970. At this point, Sabbath still had a very Blues- based sound.....you're listening to a very embryonic form of what would become metal. You should definitely take the journey with Black Sabbath as they refine the early metal sound through subsequent albums.🤘
I 🙏 too Bill Ward 😊
That is Ozzy playing the Harmonica!!! Great song....
One of the football teams from Birmingham are nicknamed ' the blues'. This has a really bluesy feel.
This is one of my favorite Black Sabbath songs !
My favourite Sabbath song, awesome energy.
What I really love about Black Sabbath is that you can really hear the blues influence in their songs.
Ozzy wrote this song about Gandalf from the Lord of the rings. He also learned to play the harmonica for this track...Try listening to "Sweetleaf" if you want to to get HIGHER! Great tune by one of the greatest rock bands ever...🔥🔥🔥
Love Lex's first reaction to the harmonica and I think she rode the raw energy of the song all the time.
Can never get enough of Lex discovering stuff like this. Wholesome af.
Yup, Metal came from the Blues, this song demonstrates this!!!!!
tomorrow's dream, sweet leaf, fairies wear boots, children of the grave, snow blind
Yess! Ooh do react to Hand Of Doom by them next :)
That is Ozzys fog horn voice. One of a kind. 🤘🏻
The tune reminds me of folklore, but with a very heavy twist.
Probably why it’s about a wizard.
Happened to find both of your channels today subscribed to both. Love the content and the way your not afraid to say what your thinking
This album was so far ahead of its time it’s ridiculous. Probably onne of the greatest albums ever made. I was eight years old when this album was released and it still stands, in my mind, as the greatest rock/ blues albums ever made. You really need to wear head phones to really hear how good this album was.
Need to do Crazy Train and Mr Crowley when Ozzy went solo so you can hear the great Randy Rhoads on guitar
Goodbye to Romance
Everyone is happy when the wizard is near , spreading his magic.
Can't go wrong with early Sabbath! SO many good songs. I think another one ya'll will really like is Sweat Leaf. Not just what it's about but the riff to it. And Lex, that's an all time epic shirt you have on!! Takes me back to High School :)
Brad, always the weirdest reactions !!!!! : o Lol
Debut Sabbath album Raw and Great every song !!!! : D
You all should try " planet caravan" by black sabbath!
Still my favorite band in 2022
Black Sabbath's debut album. Released on a Friday the 13th in 1970. It is a raw masterpiece.
I love this song
Nice song Black Sabbath was a good band that's music in my time makes me wish I could go back and have fun again compared to the music of today 70s and mid 80s was the best thanks for playing it A+
Your METALLICA Metal Up Your A shirt is GREAT!! Keep Up Your Great Work!! To You Both.
Classic Black Sabbath
This is the birth of heavy metal!!!
Such a groovy beat by Bill Ward on the drums and Geezer Butler on the bass. Also great guitar by Tony Iommi and the harmonica by Ozzy. On their by many hated album Never Say Die Ozzy wrote about his dead father on Junior's Eyes. Also a very groovy beat. On the same album Bill Ward are singing Swinging the Chains. Ozzy didn't want to do it. Great voice. Ward also sang It's Alright on the Technical Ecstasy album. Black Sabbath doing Beatles. Never Say Die was the last album with Ozzy before he was replaced by Dio. There was a lot of tension and the band were not showing up in the studio at the same time. You could say that the album were made on a very big pile of Coke
