I used this video with my adult ESL students this morning, and it was the first time that I have heard them laugh out loud at an instructional video. They were interested and seemed to really enjoy watching it. You are so great together! This video was very helpful and I look forward to using more of your lessons in the future!
So I noticed that the teacher on the left said pickle"s" instead of pickle"z" at 5:00, and then the one on the right corrected her to say picklezzz, and I'm confused because it is clear when the word is in a sentence, for example pickles are good, you'd say picklez z-are good, but when it's the last word in a sentence people would often just say pickle"s", unless when they want to emphasize the plural word in which case they would say pickle"z". Could you explain/confirm this?
Hi Sueyeon! This is a good point. Often, when a sound that is normally voiced is placed next to an unvoiced sound (which includes silence), it too becomes unvoiced. Therefore, while "pickles" would often end in a Z sound, at the end of a sentence, it may sound more like an S. We will have to make another video someday explaining this pronunciation rule!
Hi, how should the plural of theory (theories) be pronounced? I have heard some native speakers pronounce [s] at the end of theories. But based on the rule in your video, it should be [iz] because of the vowel ending [i]. I look forward to your answer. Thanks.
Thanks for the video. It helped me a lot. Nevertheless I still have a question. The word file [faɪl] has the plural files [faɪls]. Why do we not have the [z]-sound here?
For a long time I have been looking for something helping me , how to pronounce the (s) when making plurals! Now I feel much more better about that. But I have a question: Why do we say (teachers) with "s" not with "z", although I thing it belongs to the second group you have mentioned it ?
Hi, Azaad! Yes, "reads" is usually pronounced "readz", and "lives" is "livez". We don't teach on Whatsapp, sorry! But hopefully you can keep learning from our videos.
thanks mam.i am learning british english.mam p,t,k, aspiration consonant at end of the word voiceless stops? not pronounced aspiration sound.after "s" p,t,k is voiced but howmuch are rules when these are voiced.please clear my these doubts because nobody shows like this type videos except pdf.
examples- please/ˈpliːz, come/kʰʌm, stop/ˈstɒp, what/ˈwɒt ,walk/ˈwɔːk, bite/ˈbaɪt ,eat/iːt so in these examples native speakers do not pronounce p,t,k aspiration/voiceless end of the word.am i right mam?
cl ,tr,pl,cr,pl, pr, if these alphabets come initial position then c,t,p, with l,r aspiration or unaspiration ? preety mam please help me in India no aspiration sound of p,t,k,c initial position of the word.so nobody is available to teach me.if you clear my doubt i will share your videos to all my friends.
Hi Azaad. Well, we focus on Canadian/American pronunciation, so you might need to ask a British English teacher about this. Usually, in our English, voiceless stops are not aspirated (or aspirated to a lesser degree) if they follow S ("stop" , "skate", "risk") or precede L/R ("slide", "print"). This is true whether it's the beginning or the end of the word. Good luck!
We have two beautiful girls here, no one of both of them is welling to answer my question which is , how do we pronoune the (s) at the end of the plural noun (teachers), "s" or "z" and why ? The one who answers will be the queen of beauty!
Hi, love how you interact. That's much more interesting than watching a teacher talking to the end all alone.
We're glad you like it!
