I think the ocean cruise is more about the ship with minimal time at your destinations. The river cruise is based on the destination but with classy comfortable elegant rooms. It’s like a nice hotel accommodation for your travel destinations. And they seem to be so relaxing and beautiful. So much more attention to detail and you get to see the scenery. And without waves and rough waters. It just seems perfect
It's funny that you had been on so many ocean cruises but thought River cruises were boring. I never went on an ocean cruise because I thought they sounded boring. the river cruise seemed really interesting and it was fantastic!
Don't forget that the USA has river cruises too. I went on a lower Mississippi River cruise on the American Queen Steamboat. She carries over 400 passengers. Regular shore excursions are included in fare. Places we stopped, we were only vessel there. Company had their own buses for shore excursions where needed. Each evening there were several entertainment options. Main show in theater. Smaller ensembles around ship later. Main Dining room and a smaller buffet on an upper deck. Also in afternoon hotdogs on a back deck. Could get coffee, tea, cookies, ice cream late at night. Beautifully decorated. Yes, it was more expensive than a lot of ocean cruises but I felt it was worth every penny. We had passengers from Australia and the UK aboard.
I’m so glad I came across your post! I have been looking into this company’s offerings but it would be my first cruise, not just my first river cruise, so I am very hesitant! I never considered other passengers being from a diverse background beyond the USA. Very cool and definitely ups my interest. Was your trip recent (as in, within the Covid-19 pandemic)? Thanks for your share!
@@jen93106 No. It's been a few years since I cruised on the Mississippi. My latest cruise was a partial transit of the Panama Canal out of Galveston, TX in March 2019. My sister and I spent a couple of days touring Galveston Island before cruise. It was extremely foggy that year. Carnival Valor was late arriving in port so we didn't leave on our cruise until about 8:00 PM. Weather was great during cruise and ship wasn't late anywhere else.
You look great with long hair! But the charitable gesture was awesome... well done! Loving the cruise videos too. I have not been on a cruise yet, but I am desperate to. Looks like a lot of fun!
We went with Viking for our first. It was great. The sights. The service. I would definitely go on others. There are river cruises from the US, Europe, Asia, and Africa. We will be busy doing these for this point on (after the pandemic!). You were so right, Emma!
I love the length of your hair! It looks so good short, and I would never have thought it because I liked your hair long too! It really emphasizes your awesome bone structure. My dream cruise is a viking cruise down the Rhine. Maybe one day....
Haha thank you! I actually don't hate it which I thought I would. I'll definitely grow it longer than this but not as long as it was before. Yes a Viking river cruise would be amazing!!! Thank you for commenting 😁👍🏼
elbe, danube, main.. mekong, ganges.... bus tours on average probably costs 3-4 thousand per week, plus no meals attractions are included, river cruises takes care of meals, attractions. ocean cruising is two thousand for costa to sixteen thousand for regent ,,silverseas, windstar , for luxury lines. costa is 400-749 on the low end but budget for excursions. yes which river cruise destinations can you take public transportation to anywhere you wish to go? and even if you miss your boat, it will not be far to meeting the river cruise boat at the next port of call, not that I recommend this of course. but compared to missing your ocean cruise ship or bus tour, not nearly as much anxiety or expense should that happen which means because river cruises travel such short distances, there really is never a need for excursions like there is a definite need for ocean cruises to offer excursions for cities three hours one way from port.
Wow! Lots of new and interesting info in this vlog, Emma! I’m certainly interested in learning more about river cruising. I’ve often thought it would be the best way to see Europe. You will so enjoy your upcoming river cruise! P.S. Loved your interview with Tommy on Always Be Booked podcast. 😊
We did our first river cruise this year, being late 40s and we felt very young on Emerald, only a couple of people were younger than us and most were well into their 60s. Good luck on SAGA.......
Haha, Saga is a 50+ cruise line so there's a 10000% chance I'll be the youngest. Looking forward to it though! Always wanted to try river cruising 😁👍🏼 Thanks for commenting!
I know this is an older video but wanted to say I adore your hair like this. I know why you did it, but also, it suits your face. Great information, too. If I ever cruise, I think I’d prefer river.
You almost are forced to spend hundreds of dollars per excursion on an ocean cruise just to get to : florence, rome, seville, figueres, cordoba, milano, paris, london, berlin, brussels, granada... not including a guide nor museum tickets which of course are extra available for purchase
often river cruises and ocean ships cannot go to same places, land tours, bus or train tours go to all of these destinations Except islands where only cruises can get to. uffizi accademia, vatican, last supper, pinacoteca brera castello sforzesco, st petersburg can be the only way through an excursion ocean cruise. vienna, budapest, munich, salzburg can be reached by danube, prague berlin dresden wittenberg krakow warsaw from elbe river cruise, Main river for wuerzburg nuernberg, hamburg elbe river or ocean, amsterdam rhine river or ocean. cordoba mezquita, alhambra granada, seville , figueres can be reached by bus or ocean cruise. wonder about leipzig, madrid, bergamo, busseto, eisenach, pesaro, many can only be reached by land tours. mont st michel can be reached by ocean excursion or land. but not how many ocean cruises mean destinations yes are available but only by excursion or extremely long bus or train ride. inclusions often make river cruises cheaper than both ocean cruises or bus tours. with meals, hotels, travel, all included.
Croisi? think when you are on a danube river cruise you actually get to vienna budapest, elbe to dresden wittenberg; Main to nuremberg wuerzburg; guadalquivir to granada seville cordoba. in contrast on ocean cruises you have to drive or take train As Much A Three Hours One Way from port to city and then back to port! You really runrisk of missing your ocean cruise whereas if there were no excursions on a river cruise you would be fine wandering around visiting any museums palaces to your hearts delight; extra paid excursions on river include classical concerts, operas, ballets, folk music and dance performances well worth paying for.
Hey Emma, when you went to the conference, did they say anything about how they’re reducing their environmental impact? I’d love to try a river cruise but I worry about the impact of pollution from these cruises (especially given how fast this industry is growing) being pumped into rivers.
Emma Cruises Hmm, I feel some research coming on ... I know the ocean cruise companies are making some effort to reduce their pollutants in their newer ships so I’d be surprised if river cruise companies weren’t doing similar with their newer boats. So let’s find out! Will let you know what I find. PS I’m cruising on Marella’s Discovery in Jan - looking forward to it! Thanks for your vlogs - and well done for the fundraiser, you were very brave!

I enjoy your verbal expression, but it would have been nice to see this glorious cabin and bed, etc.. Woops: Just watched your Emerald Waterways post and it filled in the blanks. Sweet.
Emma, you look stunning with short hair! I subscribed recently and this is my first time seeing this vid. I am gobsmacked (see, your Britishisms stick) by how your face (structure) is made for short hair. Beautiful. 🥰🥰
Just come across your presentations very informative and will have a look at more. Although we are experienced cruisers never done a river cruise but one booked on Saga down the Danube in September hope it takes place. I saw a story today in the telegraph that some rivers are short of water, so the ships cannot sail.
