Jenna Coleman was announced as a new companion who would be joining the show during the Christmas special (which is this episode), so her early appearance in 'Asylum of the Daleks' was an intentional surprise, highlighted when she looks at the audience at the end after saying "run, you clever boy...and remember."
Stephen Moffat used one of his rare Twitter appearances to thank everyone who kept her early appearance secret, since some of the British press seem overly keen on publishing spoilers about the show.

I remember her appearing in the Dalek episode and being so confused lol The internet was a fun time then trying to figure out what was going on.

I think my favourite convention panel of all time, hands down, has to be the time that Matt Smith did a whole panel alongside both Alex Kingston and Jenna Coleman. The joke there was it was The Doctor sitting between his wife and his girlfriend. And the three of them are honestly so darn funny together!

Loved this Christmas ep. And i absolutely love Clara. The way they clicked was my favorite part. But she's died twice. That's seems rather 'impossible'. 😏

The Great Intelligence was an enemy of the 2nd Doctor, in some of his best serials back in the 60s , one episode took place in the London Underground in 1967 ;) This is apparently the origin story of this villain :) although there was others origin stories in other medias before apparently, but the main show is the cannon ^^

The best that I can remember, the doctor has married Queen Elizabeth, Marilyn Monroe, and one of the person but I can’t remember. But come on, how can you blame Clara. Who wouldn’t fall in love with the doctor almost immediately. I actually was kind of impressed by how forward and bold she was. I mean we know Amy had feelings for the doctor, however confused. We know Martha was in love with the doctor. Rose was in love with a doctor. And there have been countless one offs who were just infatuated with him. And they have only ever been two, Cara in this episode and Madame de pompadour, who have ever had the courage to simply act on those feelings.

Edit - should have read the other comments first as someone has already said this!
To give you an understanding of how this played out at the time, Jenna was announced as new companion well in advance of the screening of any S7 episode. So the audience then already knew Amy and Rory were leaving sometime in S7. In fact, due to the screening schedule, E5 was clearly going to be their final episode as it took a break then until Christmas.
The big surprise, which was revealed to the press only (astonishingly no one spoiled it) was Jenna appearing in S7E1. So when that episode aired, everyone who saw it knew something was up.
Long way of saying that all of this planned before S7E1, not a reaction to Jenna’s (fantastic) performance in that episode.

I always find it amusing to see people get bent out of shape over the flirtiness between Clara and the Doctor. Like they’re expecting the centuries old alien to view romantic relationships in the same way they do. I guarantee you River would not give a shit, since that’s who people seem to get offended on behalf of.

The thing about Clara is she's forward, unreserved; uninhibited even. It's not a trait everyone feels comfortable with, I accept that, but it does feel strange to disapprove of someone because of it. If she was a more subdued character, the dynamic wouldn't work. There are two sides to every perspective - for everyone who feels uncomfortable around flirtatiousness, there are those who enjoy the company of same. Indeed, there are those who are just naturally flirty. Obviously, there's a fine line between overt flirtation and harassment, but most people tend to respect the boundaries if there's no aggression involved.

BTW the voice of "The Great Intelligence" is Sir Ian Mckellen - who has starred in a number of film franchises including "Lord of the Rings" and X-Men

One of my favorite episodes of the modern era. I've seen it so many times. Pitch perfect if you ask me. Great reaction, thanks.

FYI - there were a few minisodes before this - one (Demons Run - 2 Dyas Later) shows Vastra and Jenny reviving Srax after the battle in a Good Man Goes to War. Two others (The Great Detective and Vastra Investigates) follows Vastra, Jenny and Strax (called the Paternoster Gang!) investigating crime in Victoria London and trying (and failing) to get the Doctor to snap out of his isolation following losing the Ponds. Enjoyed the reaction to one of my favourite Christmas episodes BUT you didn't include two of the best lines - "Bowties are cool" and "Takes one to snow one"!

Also Colin Baker played the Time Lord Commander Maxil in Arc of Infinity before being cast as the Doctor.

Even though river and the doctor are very poly, at this point river have been dead for the doctor for centuries already (although they did a poor job explaining the huge time jump we just had)

Although Dr Who is made in Cardiff, 5.18 the ladder sequences leading up to the Tardis were filmed in Portland Square, Bristol & also some parts of the city centre.

The one word that could pull the Doctor out of his introspection: "Pond"... the first time I saw this I got goosebumps!

With Amy and Martha, they are completely different characters to the previous times that we saw them and you are right, they were just actresses in the show and they impressed the powers to be so they brought them back to play different people. In classic Who it happened with actors Peter Purves and Nicholas Courtney (I say no more - spoilers!!).

The Doctor is a time traveller. All of his wives are either dead or not born. When they aren't he is with them.

The Doctor and River are polyamorous. It can happen.

    • @upg315
      @upg315 3 года назад +6

To be clear, I don't ship Clara and the Doctor, really and am also not a huge fan of all the gooshy kissy stuff in this episode. I just think it's nice to see a semi positive portrayal of polyamory on television ... even if it is between two possibly sociopathic time travelers, and any time either River or the Doctor get kissy with someone else, folks automatically start projecting monogamy onto their relationship despite the fact that it's clearly been established that they are perfectly capable of being primaries together and occasionally loving other people in both romantic and platonic modalities.

This episode made me want a companion from the past or future to travel with him, rather than someone from modern day. I know they're supposed to be our connection to the Doctor but still it would be interesting to have someone from victorian times follow him/her on all these adventures

This may just be me, but did you know that your video does not show up on Doctor Who reactions for the first 13 hours that you were available? Again it could just have been me, but I could not find this for most of the day yesterday.
