Love it! This is how track mattes should've worked all along. I think Set Matte will still have uses with specific effect stacks where you want to shape the layer's alpha channel based on itself. But yes, it's far less needed now.
Also, Tint = quick desaturate.
Jake! I totally agree. It's so very intuitive now. Perhaps one day I will embrace the Set Matte effect.

First, congrats on being able to work for Adobe to make stuff for them. Second, as someone that suffers from a condition that effects my memory this makes things SO MUCH simpler and easier to remember without having to thumb through a notebook looking for the steps to make these types of effects. I've already updated to the latest version but haven't had anything come my way that requires this yet but I am now just interested in playing with it. Yep, I think I could actually enjoy and have some fun just messing about in After Effects instead of banging my head on a wall trying to remember what should be simple steps. Cheers! Hi Boone! Writing at your request. I happened to use the Set Matte effect quite a bit in the past. Seemed relatively easy to produce simple effects with 2-3 objects, more complex rigs required more focus and trial/error. Also, before 2023, there was no other way to achieve this type of effect. Clearly the 2023 Track Matte Layers is a dramatic improvement! Appreciate you sharing this!

Thank you for this great tut... I use the set matte effect with puzzle matte render passes from 3D appplications... it is really handy in this situation... and probably the only instance someone would need to use it...

Honestly was shocked at this change and it will take some getting used to. Hated it at first but after watching this I understand how much better it is for workflow!!
hiya thank you for the video do you know why when i do those steps it makes the 'flag' in this example black and white and doesn't allow colour?
This is great. I still have a problem with track mattes when i add borders to the ai layer via right click + layer styles.

I've had to heavily rely on Set Matte effect in my Geolayers workflow so it's amazing that I can finally ditch it. It never really worked how I wanted it to work and using multiple set mattes always felt like a bit of a hack.
For me it's just super complicated to understand what it's actually doing. I'm sure it's still handy in certain cases.
Great video. Instead of going to Hue Sat to take out color, just drop a tint effect on it. Nothing to tweak.

Sorry Boone, this isn't clear at all. I fail to understand why Adobe does not produce their own tutorials on new application features.
I was in my vfx class doing a tutorial from 2016 and I was wondering why everyone was able to select luma matte in the track matte tab except me. Haha pathetic classmates! you don’t even realise I’m an update ahead of you! your 4 weeks after effects skills pale in comparison to my also 4 weeks of after effects skills except I used the new track matte system ONCE!
i hated this format is there any way to go back to the old one?
Yeah I'm guessing just use the older versions of After Effects.

But as Chinese, every inch of land is very important and serious to us, even if Taiwan is not under the management of the Chinese Communist Party now, it should still appear in the map of China. Sorry for saying something unrelated to the matte.

I have nothing to do with drawing out the borders or worrying about which land needs to be included in the map. You should contact FreeVectorMaps if you're concerned with that. This tutorial is about teaching animation and design techniques.
