Parallel compression works wonders. Also de-essing the reverb fx (send effect, de-ess before reverb) That way the esses do not catch unneeded attention in reverb tails.
I just discovered the Manny Maroquin triple D from waves. On some vocals, the de-harsher is a godsend tool that just does what it does so perfectly and smooths everything out. When I get vocals I didn't track and can't re-record it can really save a session.
Marc Daniel Nelson is rapidly becoming a favorite of mine thanks to these videos. Thank you. One vocal "trick" I use - use two sends - one to a stereo plate, one to a mono plate with a longer decay. As the stereo plate decays, the reverb seems to tail off into the center.
@@HollerAtcherBoi Yes, you can certainly do it either way. I like the first way, because it keeps the focal feeling centered for me but definitely either way works. May not be quite as noticeable though because the stereo will sort of fill in the areas where the mono was.
It feels like engineers are the rare few that actually have integrity in the music biz. Don’t have to sell their soul and have the freedom to stay real to their love.

I actually came to this technique by myself when I need to have huge long ambience for a voice, thank you for explanations of how it’s actually working, so now I can improve it 🙏🙏🙏😊
Great tip!! 👍 btw You can add mid side dynamic Eq (Q3, F6...) before C2 and sidechain vocal to 1-5kHz freq on mid channel and compress it 2-3 dB to create even more space. 😊
you professionals just teaching us.. just giving it away. thank you so much. i can't stand it. i'm CRYING. D: ok, i'm not really crying.. but thank you so much!!
Pretty "Rad" indeed! My trick learned this week: copy the vocals to another track, compress the hell out of it and add saturation, blend in with original vocal as needed, til the vocal pops out. Cheers!
@@Skykingsound yes or the other trick from Andrew which is similar: copy the vocal (or just use a send to a bus), use an EQ to filter out the low and bump the highs, compress that to hell with an opto compressor, optionally add another EQ to get the low end back. It's basically like a multi-band compressor where you are compressing the mid-hi's in order to get that stuff to cut through and make the words better stick out.
@@HollerAtcherBoi when I was first starting out, id either confuse parallel compression and side chain or think they were the same thing. Nothing sounded too good until I figured out how wrong I was.
I love this guy, thanks for having him on! He is becoming one of my favorites. I love this song Anchor! I will have some similar stuff coming out soon and hope to send it you guys way and let you do your thing! Top notch pro’s!
I dig how you explain things in a way that encourages thinking along the lines to experiment and this deal wont work with everything, but its a great feat.
Thank you Warren for partnering with Marc Daniel Nelson and bringing him on board your channel. Great tutorials from an expect that are truly appreciated. I'm a Reaper user so unable to use the presets he offers but enjoying the learning curve still the same. Your channel is always 1st class but Marc adds a lot of experience and knowledge he seems more than willing to share. Great work.
Hey, Jed! I work for Jason at Tate Springs. Just thought it was cool seeing you in the comment section here, small world. I enjoyed hearing you come play a set down here last fall, you were phenomenal live and I enjoyed your album as well!
@@corbanredman4732 man thank you so much! Very cool to see you here too. I’ve followed and learned quite a bit from Warren over the years. I’ve found I “fit in” better in the producer/engineer world more than the artist/singer world haha
I love how the reverb tail is huge but the compressor puts it out of the way when the next line begins. Basically the tail is always as long as it needs to be. Not too long, not too short!
Marc...despite what i may 'know', you always present in a philosophical/schematic way...and that sparks fresh perspectives which are so valuable. Delay>rev is always washy but from the early days of hardware, the dsp128 had parallel send from reverb>delay...simple building block that has stood the test of time esp.when delay timing is pattern based and you add limiter/over comp before the chain to take the edges off or swell the verb (diff space). Really appreciate you!
Every time I watch one of his videos it convinces me that Marc Daniel is the best mixer for my personal taste. Everything he does enhances the feel and vibe of whatever he works on. How is it possible to make amazing choices like that every single time?
What a timely video to pop up in my feed. We've just redone several vocal tracks in a proper studio and I knew I needed a blooming reverb on one of them but thought I was going to have to go into a complex automation chain switching a reverb on and off. Once again, thank you for a gold dust video.
Thank you very much Marc. I really dig this AA lemon, didn't know about it. The concept of ducking reverb and delays has been introduced to me by Warren in other videos but it's always nice to see another take on it done by other producers/engineers. Great taste as always
@@massivebeatzz What a nice thing to say; thank you :) Actually, I've been studying youtube A LOT and just updated my profile pic and banner. I want to start uploading more regularly-- and hopefully soon.
What a great technique! I went and added a send to my mixing template for ducked vocal delay and reverb and I can't wait to use it on my next mix! Thanks Marc and Warren!
very nice :) The ducking makes so that the delay doesnt steal the spotlite for the active vocal. Only in the betweens. Makes the song more beautiful :)
Yay, I like seeing the dog hanging out again, lazing away there on the couch. But wearing booties? Ok, now he's just showing off. Catnap slippers, perhaps? Also, thanks for the Tegeler recommendations from Marc and Warren, because it's hard to demo everything out there, so your recommendations are appreciated. Their Schwerkraft Mashine has become my new favorite mix bus comp. Gadzooks it's good! Another great video, too, so thanks for sharing your process. Mentoring is an open-hearted, kind gift and can be rare nowadays when so many are highly proprietary about their "secrets." Kudos to you two lads. Cheers
That's pretty cool. Being mainly a live sound guy, I tend to think of side-chaining in relation to bass and kick drum or vocals and instruments, keeping things that would get buried in a mix present. I never considered using it to let a dry vocal punch through and let the wet signal shimmer behind it. Thanks for sharing!
I am also excited to try this trick out in a live setting. I always feel like really pushing reverb & delay in a live setting just sounds out of place, but I can never get the tail to sound good at lower volumes. Adding the sidechain and pre-delay should really help get those nice reverb tails without sounding like the reverb plate is on stage with the band.
I love using the Sonible smart:comp, somehow more natural ducking with it, takes down only the frequencies that are being used and leaves the „air“ around the vocal intact
brilliant stuff Marc!! Compression for ducking on a verb/FX send is a MUST for serious pro level vocals with depth but still sitting right in front!! CHEERS!!!
Mr. Nelson, This trick is amazing! I'd equate the effect to an amazingly customizable pre-delay. Only rather than strip the effect back in time to reveal a leading raw signal, the effects combination allows for controlling the volume of the effect applied to the raw signal in time. Brillant!
I've done something similar for our band's live mix. I basically used Vocal Rider from Waves to duck delay when there's vocal - the benefits of using plugins live, you can get crazy creative with your sound :)
Thank you for teaching me this technique! I may not have or be able to afford these nicer plugins but I can still approximate the desired end by building the chain the same way and you know what? It sounds great!!! Thank You!!! 😃
As always great video from Marc Nelson! I like dynamic eqs more for this kind of ducking. Especially those with a release time. Sometimes I just duck a wide eq bell in the mids, sometimes the full spectrum.
Sounds truly amazing. Everything about the effects is just spot on!! ..it embraces/compliments the vocals to perfection. Its all in the details!.. Great video
What are your favorite tricks for mixing vocals?
