      Good evening from the UK... At the moment I'm in the exploration stage... despite how long I've been doing this, I just used to tough it out and go 'commando', so to speak! Mostly because I lack the understanding and I didn't just want to rely on 'Plugins' to sound good... or at least better! Recently though, having jumped headfirst into the academy, I'm becoming more confident in trying out stuff... nothing major, 'Enverb' for some gated toms recently, 'Stereo Spread' cos' I'm basically lazy and it's helping the tracks sound more dynamic... out of stock stuff, have used 'Fresh Air' which is subtle but nice and 'Drip'... I know 😉... but it does actually add some much needed pizzazz, or seasoning if you like? My biggest discovery is 'Output'... subscribed to 'Arcade' which is a pretty cool repository for samples and is already changing my style and sound! I've said enough!! 😎👍

    I love how in the audio industry, people are like:
    - "Adding EQ there seems to sometimes add a little too much..."
    - *intensely waiting, I can't even imagine what word he could possibly use to describe the situation accurately, there are no words for this, right?...
    - "...woofiness."
    - *that's the one

    TAL AUDIO XL Chorus is amazing for spreading synth based sounds when they come and go leaving space for the main bass figure in the center..... its free.

    • @Thoracius
      @Thoracius 2 года назад

      It's a very warm chorus. Like nothing-above-6k on the modulated signal warm. The hass will retain your crispy higher harmonics but make them stereo. The TAL will keep your highs centered and create stereo out of the low-mids/mids. The TAL chorus sounds great, but if you want to create space for something in the center, it's good to be aware of the frequencies involved.

    Great video - Thank you! As a German native speaker I had to laugh about the title insert "Hass Effekt"... the Haas Effect is the pseudo-acoustic effect named after Herbert Haas. "Hass" is the German word for "hate". Not sure what the "Hass Effect" is, perhaps it's something about our history...

      While I also like RBass. I’ve realized, after lots of testing, that MaxxBass does a better job at retaining sub-information while adding harmonics. You need to mess with all the parameters to dial it in, which is part of the secret- you have more control than RBass Therefore, I always use Maxxbass over RBass.

    I've been finding PS22 Split from Waves audio a great version of the hass effect. I recently mixed a live recording of a rock trio and used PS22 to push the distortion gtr to the sides to make room for the screaming vocals down the middle. Worked a treat. I've used a lot of mono to stereo spreader effects and PS22 is my fav.

    this was great! my first experience with the idea of HAAS on bass was from the David Moulton Audio Lectures like...25 years ago when you had to order the discs from Mix Magazine because there was no "online" ordering back then hahaha...everyone would look at me weird when I would use the HAAS effect on bass (I always high passed the effect to keep the mono low end clean) but in the end when I'd A/B it...they'd always choose the effected version...cool to see it showing up again 🙂

  • @svarogstudio
    @svarogstudio 3 года назад +2

    Some great tips here. I remember some years ago I was trying to achieve that wide big low end I heard on some tracks, and nothing worked because spreading you low end in stereo is "illegal"... and creating Haas effect with bass... "you are insane!"

    Thanks Marc for this one. What I learned most from this video was a tiny detail when demonstrating your use of Vitamin. While soloing the lowest frequency range band you were still listening for clarity between instruments. (Kick, Bass, Synth) This was very helpful in finding a more precise definition of tonal centers for each instrument, all while exploring in the “mudd” range . It was a Captain Obvious moment for me on how to keep using critical listening within a given range instead of hearing just the range as a whole. Dive deeper.

    Your videos are DA BOMB.
    My top bass plugins :
    1) UAD LITTLE LABS VOICE OF GOD
    Nothing beats the warm big sound for a FAT 35-45hz sub. Perfect to enhance kicks too... So versatile, you can use to enhance any source really, from 3-500 Hz and it just sounds so much warmer and bigger than anything else.
    2) BOZ DIGITAL LABS BARK OF DOG (FREE)
    A bit like RBASS but I prefer the sound and it's FREE!! Nice for kick and sub.
    I personally never got on with Vitamin. Sounded harsh on everything to me imo.
