I really enjoy your tutorials. I wanted to ask how you figure the aspect ratios. I am looking to make a wallet chain and I like the way your work is tight and not loose. What is the mathematical formula you use to keep it tight?
The all important thing is to keep the same AR, as long as you do that, your chain will look the same regardless of material or size. Check out my Byzantine video for an explanation of AR. But simply, the aspect ratio is the inner diameter of the jump ring (IE the size of the mandrel) divided by the diameter of the wire. You need to work in mm. So in my case the rings I use are 1mm diameter and have an inner diameter of 5mm. So... 5mm divided by 1mm = AR 5 if you think about it, this means that 5 wires will fit across the diameter of one jump ring. Hence it determines how tight a chain you can make. A basic belcher chain for example could be made (just) with AR 2. as long as you can get two rings through another you can make a belcher. But in the case of the Persian 6 in 1 here, the clue is in the title. Six rings go through each one, so the inner diameter needs to accommodate six wires. Obviously this varies depending on the pattern of the chain. But hence you see where we end up with an AR of 5 to 6 for a nice looking Persian. You can also flip the equation round too... Lets say you have some 1.2 mm wire and you want to make a Persian. Simple, just multiply the AR (lets say 5) by the diameter of the wire. 1.2mm wire X 5 AR = 6 mm mandrel. So just grab a 6mm mandrel and you'll get a nice Persian with your 1.2mm wire . But how big will the bracelet be? well that's simple too, imagine looking at a jump ring flat and drawing a line across the middle. You've got 1.2mm wire + 5mm mandrel + 1.2mm wire. Hence the outer diameter of the rings and bracelet will be 7.4mm (or in other words double the wire, plus the mandrel). Likewise say you have some jump rings. 7.2 mm outside diameter, made from 1.2mm wire. can you use these for a Persian? well, you just need to work out the AR. So if its 7.2mm diameter then , Simply subtract two lots of wire. 7.2 outside - 1.2 wire - 1.2 wire = 4.5mm inside diameter With the wire and inner diameter we can now calculate the AR thus... 4.5 inside dia / 1.2 wire = 3.75 AR That's way to tight and would not work for a Persian 6 in 1. (remember we need 5 to 6 AR) However a great ratio for a byzantine is 3.5 to 4 AR. so whilst these rings wouldn't make a Persian, they'd make a great byzantine. Inner diameter / wire diameter =AR Wire diameter X AR = Inner diameter (the mandrel size required) Wire diameter + mandrel Diameter + Wire diameter = outside diameter (width of final bracelet). Outer diameter - Wire diameter - wire diameter = Inner diameter (mandrel) Perhaps I should make a video on all this. Hope this helps. Dave

I'm new to this. Really new. I found your vid, and decided I wanted to try this design. I also decided to watch another vid, just to see. I made it about 2 minutes into the vid, and I was so confused, I quit watching. My point is, if I had found the other vid first, I probably wouldn't have wanted to even try. This is an awesome vid, and you are a wonderful teacher! Thank you.
What a wonderful thing to say. Thank you for those words. Indeed this is why I made the video, It's easy to do, but very hard to explain and many people miss out important details like the ratios and how to finish the chain. My intention was to explain it clearly from start to finish so that anyone could have a go. I hope you managed it. Do checkout my Byzantine tutorial too, a beautiful chain but very easy to do. Thanks for your videos. They are my favorites among chainmaille tutorials. I did want to pass on a small variation I stumbled across. For the flip step, I find it easier to thread the new ring through the v-shaped rings first, then thread through the two just-added loose rings. As far as I can tell, the outcome is the same but I get the fiddly bit out of the way with maximum control over the ring I'm threading. Thanks again. Can't wait for the next weave tutorial.
Thanks for sharing. Difficult to read it, but ill try it and see what you mean. there are different ways, of making the same chain. Thanks for your input. Dave
Returning to chain maille after a good few years on other hobbies, badly needed a reminder/refresher, especially on my favourite weave, the Full Persian. Your tutorial video is excellent, thanks! Have got the chain maille bug again :)
I just watch a video showing how to do this pattern. I assure you that your way is more easy and clear. I'm trying to lern chain mille, and with you as a teacher I think I can learn. Thank you so much for all your time and effort. God bless.

Nice Video. I make chains and chainmail since I'm 15 years old, and this gives me the inspiration to try and make one of these chains once again, but better this time. I love the way you say "hook". Gave me a big smile on my face ;-) Greetings from Germany.
bought a lovely necklace with this weave, inspired me to want to learn how to make it. this tutorial is very good and Im looking forward to my chain mail coming in to give it a try!
Thank you Dave!! This is by far THE most straightforward, direct, shortest, and most informative tutorial video I’ve seen. You make it so simple to understand with your concise wording and extremely clear video. Definitely going to be looking st more of your videos. Keep up the beautiful work! ❤️
Glad it was helpful! As a few others have asked me. As long as you stick to the suggested ratios, most chainmail designs don't need to be soldered. I weld mine, but this is mainly to improve the finish and add value, rather than any real structural strength. Cut them cleanly with a saw and they will be fine. Dave
Thank you very kind. My intention is always to assume nothing and to show everything from start to finish clearly. Hopefully I have managed to do that, with what is a somewhat tricky thing to explain. Thanks for watching. Dave
Thank you. Yes I'm still here and making videos. I was very busy over xmas with commissions. But still here! More chain mail projects coming. Thanks for watching. Dave
I used this Technic for some key rings that didn't have chain. It turned out pretty cute. And I used some ugly jump rings that I would never use in jewelry. I might try to make a rose gold chain next for a bracelet for a quality pretty one. Thanks so much.
I did it I made a rose gold necklace set for myself. Pretty girly for a girly girl like me. Thanks again for your tutorial. If you would like to see what I made. instagram.com/p/Bz4yyJrFJdU/ It turned out real nice. And like again I say thanks for your great video!
Like every other comment, this is the best tutorial out there. Quality is great, you take your time, and go show, in detail, how to really create it. I spent 4 hours trying to make it. Alas, I failed the whole time, until I came across this video. Couldn't believe that I got it. I literally questioned myself, "how did it work? how did I get it right? what did I do wrong". I continued and now I'm halfway done with a bracelet. Taking a break now, but this video was the best help I've seen. Thank you.
I am impressed and I know when I start doing this I will watch your clips and follow it. Awesome channel and I am grateful to have you as a teacher lol. Thank you so much 👍👍👍
Good video! Helped me a lot. Before this one, i watched some 3-4 tutorials and they were bad, this one is easy and very simple to understand! Thank you Celtic Dreams!
Thanks for watching. I seem to be getting the Anthony Hopkins thing a lot. Don't see it myself. Weird. Hope you enjoyed the video and give it a go. Dave
Ty for your talent ad for sharing such great step by step instructions !! I finally made a Byzantine bracelet by your instructions and will try this ! Ty. Ty 🤩
THANK YOU for posting this excellent tutorial! I've struggled to teach myself the full Persian weave for months. Your video is so easy to follow that I easily learned the weave in less than 15 minutes! You're one of the good guys, Dave. Thanks again.
Just wanted to say thanks for this tutorial. Ends up my Aspect Ratio was the issue. Thanks for the slides for helping me get that straightened out... I was at waaaay too small a ratio! All the best.
Thanks, that's why I give example sizes. As many people don't understand the importance of aspect ratio. If you haven't seen it, do check out my byzantine video too, especially the beginning where I explain what AR is. Thanks for watching Dave. ruclips.net/video/OmNRbWeKASM/видео.html&lc=UgxT4jDsxpZAgbvWDz54AaABAg
I've only just started with making chain bracelets. I've watched several videos on how to do this weave, but this is by far the easiest way to do it. The rings are almost falling into place all by themselves once you've got the flip-and-turn movement going. Thank you very much for this tutorial. Also love the accent 😉
Thank you so much for the lovely comments. My intention was to try an explain it simply, so that anyone could have a go at it. Pleased to hear that you have got it. Thanks for watching. Dave
You make some fantastic chains--I could only hope to have your patience! I'm going to recommend your Etsy store to customers who want a heavy Persian or Byzantine chain.
Well, thank you very much. To be honest the Persian and the byzantine are quite therapeutic. I just sit on the sofa with my feet up and a cup of tea, half watching the TV. just two pairs of pliers and a box of jump rings. In summer i sit out in the garden. I'll then spend and hour or so at my welder. Again very therapeutic, almost like meditation. I find it very relaxing, and you know that you are also making money whilst you do it !. Dave
I was struggling to figure out how to do this on my own and came across your vid. Fantastic tutorial, I really appreciate it! Figured out the hard way that an AR of 4.1 doesn't agree with this weave though. Hope you're doing well!
Glad it helped! Yes the aspect ratio is all important. Checkout my blog explaining this below. Dave pepetools.com/blogs/news/aspect-ratio-the-magic-number-for-making-perfect-jump-rings-and-chains
I really enjoyed watching this video Mr. Wilson, your bracket and instructions are awesome! I am inspired to make one for my husband for Father's day, thank you!
Thanks for that. I did study al the methods I could find, and found this to be the simplest that I could explain for others to follow. Appreciated. Dave
Thanks so much for this! Out of the few FP videos I searched this was the easiest one to follow. Your technique made it much easier to learn. I searched your other videos for more CM projects. I wish you had more!! =)
This is brilliant! I’ve looked at some tutorials for this weave that have made my head spin. Thanks to you, I just made a beautiful pair of sterling silver full Persian swag earrings with 22 gauge 3.6mm ID rings. They are stunning! Such a tight, beautiful weave.
Thanks so much for the comment. That's exactly why I made this video. There are lots of others who are kindly trying to share what they know, but sadly most are unable to demonstrate it clearly. Hence my intention here was to clarify it step by step for anyone to follow and have a go. Nice to know I succeeded in my goal. Enjoy your new skills. Dave
Thank's Anthony Hopkins. Did about 2 inches. Will continue tomorrow, as it's almost midnight right now and daylight would make this easier. Also, I don't use different colours, so it's a bit difficult. Edit: I didn't quit. I turned on another light and kept going and it worked out really well!
Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou your tuts are amazing and easy for me to follow so glad I found you on utube I very much appreciate the time and effort you take to share .
Not really tedious. I find it very relaxing. Not difficult one you know the technique and there are only two moves. So I just sit watching the TV with a box of rings. It's quite therapeutic. And as you say, a nice end result. Thanks for watching. Dave
This video is awesome and I can't wait to give it a try. I'd been watching mostly American videos and trying to work out jump rings is a headache and a half. They all seem to have lots of colourful versions easy to get in the correct sizes and I've been trawling ebay to find stuff 😂. Hope I get to give it a try when stuff gets here, thing I got the right stuff haha, I didn't get silver or gold stuff to practice on though! Hoping this could be a more fun physical therapy for the nerves damage in my arms! Thank you for your awesome videos!
You're very welcome. Perhaps have a go at the byzantine too (its very easy). Working out aspect ratios is indeed impossible with American wire gauges as the mandrel is in inches. You need both the wire and the mandrel to be in mm in order to divide and calculate the ratio. Have fun!. Dave
made a nice bracelet including the clasp, really happy with it! im now trying to make candy cane cord style, and really struggling... any chance you could make a vid on it?
Great, well done. Lovely weave isn't it? I haven't made a candy cane, but follow the link for a great chain mail site on it. My next video will probably a half Persian as a few people have asked for that one and the other videos onRUclips aren't too clear on it. So a few people wanting to learn that one. Thanks for watching. Dave
It's all about the aspect ratio. Thicker wire means you need bigger rings, to keep the same ratio. I use 1mm wire with 5mm inside diameter, which gives me a 7mm wide chain. Still easy to solder, just turn the joints to the outside edge and use paste solder or pick soldering, you can easily do 4 or 5 at a time. Plus it's fun ! Thanks for watching, Dave
Easy when you know how, as they say. But it really is. Once you get that flip move, you can sit there with a cup of tea watching the TV. It’s quite relaxing. I do hope you have a go. Thanks for watching, Dave.
So...
5mm divided by 1mm = AR 5
if you think about it, this means that 5 wires will fit across the diameter of one jump ring.
You've got
1.2mm wire + 5mm mandrel + 1.2mm wire.
7.2 outside - 1.2 wire - 1.2 wire = 4.5mm inside diameter
With the wire and inner diameter we can now calculate the AR thus... 4.5 inside dia / 1.2 wire = 3.75 AR
That's way to tight and would not work for a Persian 6 in 1. (remember we need 5 to 6 AR) However a great ratio for a byzantine is 3.5 to 4 AR. so whilst these rings wouldn't make a Persian, they'd make a great byzantine.
Inner diameter / wire diameter =AR
Wire diameter X AR = Inner diameter (the mandrel size required)
Wire diameter + mandrel Diameter + Wire diameter = outside diameter (width of final bracelet).
Outer diameter - Wire diameter - wire diameter = Inner diameter (mandrel)
Perhaps I should make a video on all this. Hope this helps. Dave

Dave

Extremely helpful, thank you for showing us how to do it in simple terms for us ❤
Thanks for watching. Dave
Returning to chain maille after a good few years on other hobbies, badly needed a reminder/refresher, especially on my favourite weave, the Full Persian. Your tutorial video is excellent, thanks! Have got the chain maille bug again :)
Great to hear! Dave
Last time I tried this weave I cried 😭 thank you ❤ I got it now
Great, glad I could help. Enjoy your new skills. Dave
I just started a metal arts class and was having so much trouble with the Byzantine. Your tutorial helped a bunch! Thanks!
Glad I could help! Dave
I just watch a video showing how to do this pattern. I assure you that your way is more easy and clear. I'm trying to lern chain mille, and with you as a teacher I think I can learn. Thank you so much for all your time and effort. God bless.
If you haven't already, do check out my Byzantine video, with some important information on aspect ratio. Dave ruclips.net/video/OmNRbWeKASM/видео.html
Thank you, thank you , thank you...I have 5 written tutorials and I just couldn't grasp this weave. Watched your video once and BOOM! I got it.
Great. My planning obviously worked then, and I explained it clearly. Nice to know you managed to get it. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. its appreciated. Dave
Excellent - truly excellent explanation of the 6-in-1 chain. Finally I can make one that has not been thrown at the wall - LOL.
It's really just a matter of understanding the flip move, once you've got that it's all pretty quick and easy. Good luck. Dave
Started this tonight for the wife for her Christmas present, thank you dave your the best👍
Good luck. Dave
I have to say I could spend all my free time watching your videos. Here in America we need that extra help you so pain stakingly provided us. I understood what your doing your a very good teacher thanks big guy my hats off to you. Loved your video so much after I finish this comment I'm going to subscribe.
Thanks for the lovely comments. This is why I do it. (Note no adverts or spam). Just sharing my passion and helping to inspire others. many thanks. Dave
Thanks so much! I was ready to give up on this weave, but you got me on track.
Thanks for sharing that. Great to hear you managed it. Well done. Should be much easier in future now you've got it. Dave
Very descriptive. thank you for including conversion of measurements between US and European units.
It seems a lot of my followers are American, So I do try and show both. Thanks for watching. Dave
I'm new to chain mail and your video is so helpful!!! Took a few tries but I got it!! thank u!!
Perhaps not the easiest to start with. I'd always recommend the Byzantine as a starter, ts surprisingly simple once you know how. Thanks for watching. I hope I've inspired you. Dave

Nice Video. I make chains and chainmail since I'm 15 years old, and this gives me the inspiration to try and make one of these chains once again, but better this time. I love the way you say "hook". Gave me a big smile on my face ;-)
Greetings from Germany.
Thank you for you kind words. I'm pleased I have inspired you again. Thanks for watching. Dave
bought a lovely necklace with this weave, inspired me to want to learn how to make it. this tutorial is very good and Im looking forward to my chain mail coming in to give it a try!
Good luck. It's easy when you know how. Dave
Thank you Dave!! This is by far THE most straightforward, direct, shortest, and most informative tutorial video I’ve seen. You make it so simple to understand with your concise wording and extremely clear video. Definitely going to be looking st more of your videos. Keep up the beautiful work! ❤️
You're very welcome! Perhaps check out the byzantine too. Very easy to do once you know how. Dave ruclips.net/video/OmNRbWeKASM/видео.html
American friend over here! Thank you!
Thanks for watching. Dave
Nice! Thank you. ☺️🌸 I like the no soldering method.
Dave
This is my favorite channel. You're the best instructor.
Thank you very kind. My intention is always to assume nothing and to show everything from start to finish clearly. Hopefully I have managed to do that, with what is a somewhat tricky thing to explain. Thanks for watching. Dave
You are so osm please don't leave RUclips your video your voice is perfect for me and please make more videos 🙇👍
Thank you. Yes I'm still here and making videos. I was very busy over xmas with commissions. But still here! More chain mail projects coming. Thanks for watching. Dave
This was fantastic thank you so much, I kept trying and failing until I found your video
Glad I could help! Dave
Lost my rag about 7 times.... Once it finally clicked on my head there was no stopping me...... Love it, thanks for posting, amazing tutorial x
Thank you. Glad you finally got it. Dave
Really enjoying your tutorial videos, Thank you!
You're very welcome! Dave
Please make more videos you are a great teacher and you explain it so well
The chain mail videos seem to be popular, so few more of those to come. Thanks for watching.Dave
I used this Technic for some key rings that didn't have chain. It turned out pretty cute. And I used some ugly jump rings that I would never use in jewelry. I might try to make a rose gold chain next for a bracelet for a quality pretty one. Thanks so much.
Thanks for watching, and commenting. Dave
Thank you.
Many thanks for sharing. it's great to hear you got it. Enjoy your new skills and the things you can now make. Thanks for watching. Dave
I am impressed and I know when I start doing this I will watch your clips and follow it. Awesome channel and I am grateful to have you as a teacher lol. Thank you so much 👍👍👍
Very kind of you. Thanks for watching. Dave

Good video! Helped me a lot. Before this one, i watched some 3-4 tutorials and they were bad, this one is easy and very simple to understand! Thank you Celtic Dreams!
Glad it helped! Dave
@@CelticDreamsCoUk thank you.Have a nice day ;)
Oi! I just found Sir Anthony Hopkins long lost son!! No just joshin ya . Excellent video good sir.
Ty. Ty 🤩
Wonderful! Enjoy your new skills. Dave
THANK YOU for posting this excellent tutorial! I've struggled to teach myself the full Persian weave for months. Your video is so easy to follow that I easily learned the weave in less than 15 minutes! You're one of the good guys, Dave. Thanks again.
Thanks for such a lovely comment, its appreciated. Note I also have videos on the Full Persian Cross and the byzantine too. Thanks for watching. Dave

This helped so much; I struggled with the Persian for weeks because I didn't understand.
Once you've got the flip move, it's quite easy. There are other methods, but personally I think this is the easiest. Thanks for watching. Dave
Dave
Amaging, very nice. It's little difficult but you are an excellent teacher. I like the way you teach. Thabks a lot.
You are welcome 😊 Its quite easy once you get that flip move. Anyone can do it. Dave.
Dave

I really enjoyed watching this video Mr. Wilson, your bracket and instructions are awesome! I am inspired to make one for my husband for Father's day, thank you!
Thanks. Perhaps check out the Byzantine video too, perhaps a little easier to make. Dave ruclips.net/video/OmNRbWeKASM/видео.html
Love you tutorials, best descriptions and explanations, thanks
Thank you. very kind.Dave
Excellent tutorial.
I find it easier to go through the sides, first.
Thank you so much for making these tutorials. : )
Thanks for the comments. Dave
Excellent..........thank you for this tutorial! Have tried to make this bracelet 4 times and now I think it is possible!
Simple once you get it. Good luck, and if you need any help just shout. Bets wishes, Dave

Спасибо за просмотр. Надеюсь, вы смогли понять это по видео. Dave
Thank you so much for this flip trick! So much easier than the method I was using! Much appreciated!
Thanks for that. I did study al the methods I could find, and found this to be the simplest that I could explain for others to follow. Appreciated. Dave
Love the bird sounds so relaxing

The best tutorial ever!!! Thank you!!!👍👍👍👍
Glad you think so! You’re welcome 😊 Dave
My very first chain came out perfect! Thanks for the tutorial!
Great. Thanks for sharing that. So pleased, I've inspired someone else. Try the byzantine, its easy when you know how. Dave.
You are cool. I love how you explain and show step by step how to make this wonderful weave. Thanks, God bless.
Thanks for the lovely comments. Note I have also made videos on the Persian Cross, and also the Byzantine. Do check them out. Dave
Thanks so much for this! Out of the few FP videos I searched this was the easiest one to follow. Your technique made it much easier to learn. I searched your other videos for more CM projects. I wish you had more!! =)
You're very welcome! I will make more videos. see also the full Persian cross and the Byzanine to be getting on with. ; ) thanks, Dave
Very easy to follow, and nice close ups. Thank you
Thanks for watching. Dave
Unbelievably beautiful demo!!! Thank you so much!

Excellent tutorial. Very detailed. I've been looking for something with the wire sizes and aspect ratio.
Glad it was helpful! Dave
Your videos are the best!
Glad you like them! Dave
Dave
P.s. Try the byzantine and the Persian cross video too.

I'm glad that you persisted. It does get easier. Easy when you know how. Well done ! Dave
Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou your tuts are amazing and easy for me to follow so glad I found you on utube I very much appreciate the time and effort you take to share .
Nice to be appreciated. Thanks for watching. Dave
Wow, a very nice piece. It seems to be a bit tedious in the making, but it turns our looking wonderful. Well done !
Not really tedious. I find it very relaxing. Not difficult one you know the technique and there are only two moves. So I just sit watching the TV with a box of rings. It's quite therapeutic. And as you say, a nice end result. Thanks for watching. Dave
Yes you are the one of tha best Goldsmith
Very kind, thanks for watching. Dave
Absolutely beautiful! You are a fantastic teacher! Thank you!
You're welcome. Perhaps check out the Byzantine too. Dave
You are a great teacher! Thank you so mucin
mucin ?
Have fun!. Dave
started mine today thanks to this video! thanks buddy
Good luck. Shout if you need any help. Dave
made a nice bracelet including the clasp, really happy with it! im now trying to make candy cane cord style, and really struggling... any chance you could make a vid on it?
Great, well done. Lovely weave isn't it? I haven't made a candy cane, but follow the link for a great chain mail site on it. My next video will probably a half Persian as a few people have asked for that one and the other videos onRUclips aren't too clear on it. So a few people wanting to learn that one. Thanks for watching. Dave
Yes I plan on soldering all the joints. Do you think I also need a larger wire along with the soldering? Thank you for all your ideas.
Спасибо что так подробно всё объясняете.Thank you for explaining everything in such detail.
Your welcome. Dave
You're welcome. Dave
Cool stuff, very helpful! Gonna use this technique to connect my sheep pelt cape on the front for my viking costume. Your accent is very charming btw.
Sounds great! Dave
You really made it look easy and very clear, thank you!
Easy when you know how, as they say. But it really is. Once you get that flip move, you can sit there with a cup of tea watching the TV. It’s quite relaxing. I do hope you have a go. Thanks for watching, Dave.
