A little quick TLDR of the story. "Bastion" was a series of robot created by Cyborgs camed "Omnics", who themselves were corrupted by as yet unknown means to attack humans and there was a war between "Onmics" and humans a few decades before the time-frame of the game started. In the current time-line in the game, the war is "over" in most places (except Russia) but there are shadowy organisations trying to start it up again. "Overwatch" was an international "police/special" forces that ended the war, but it no longer exists as the organisation was disbanded. The other shorts of this are equally amazing and you should check them out. If you want too check them out, you should start with the very first released trailer then watch the animated shorts in order "Recall", "Alive", "Dragons", "Hero" (after Hero is when you should have watched this one :P) and lastly "Infiltration".

One of the designers is Torbjorn Lindholm, one of the playable characters in-game. They did not have weapons. 3. Bastion units were repurposed by an unknown God Program when it stole SST Laboratories Siege Automaton E54 blueprint schematics, adding weapons and combat software to be frontline expendable troops. 4. Omnics did not exist before the First Omnic Crisis, which started when Omnica Corporation's dormant Omniums were infected by God Programs. 5. The game is NOT canon - only cinematics and comics are. 6. Overwatch wasn't police - it was a peacekeeping organisation under UN supervision which was created after First Omnic Crisis ended.
Overwatch is a story set in the distant future where after a period of conflict between man and machine, things settle down and the world prospers. Overwatch was then disbanded for being accused of crimes and other conspiracies. After that, terrorist organisations and criminal groups threaten the peace, will Overwatch be recalled against laws set, which make Overwatch activity illegal and punishable by law, or will the world slowly burn?
