Hi there maybe you could damn up further downstream to make the water level a little higher ? That would be better for swimming and maybe make the space a little larger with some rocks placed at the side to make better access ?
Can I make a suggestion, Clear out the full stretch of the stream on your land, Then at the bottom of the stream on your land drop in rocks and dirt on top, but don't do all at once, people down stream might be relying on the water, take a few days over it and raise it up about a foot each day until about a foot below the top ground level, doing this not only gives you deeper water, it will also raise up the water ground table level, and also you could stock up the deeper pool with fish, which will be extra food for you
caution: raising the water level could drown the tree roots. In Australia we are doing the opposite of stream clearing, we remove the weeds and plant reeds to slow the water passing quickly through, it soaks the surrounding area. This stops the wet/dry cycle and allows more plant and animal life to live.
As others have pointed out, you could build the little dam with some of the stones that stick out on the just cleaned earth around the creek. I would consider pressure washing them anyways. Also as a finishing touch, perhaps throw some grass seeds on the bare earth around the creek so it gets more comfortable over time.
What a lovely place at your creek, even a little bridge! I loved that both your Mums were there helping clear all the overgrown bushes, trees and brambles, two lovely ladies. This creek and the clearing around it will be a real asset to you in the summer xxx
Well done everyone! Especially the Moms pitching in. You might want to dig out a hot tub sized hole in the creek bottom as a cool water plunge that several people can sit in. If the water flow needs to be slowed down or deepened, a small weir could solve that problem.
Mom Army reinforcements! Such troopers! Was expecting your swimming hole to be a bit deeper but I suppose it still works. ;) Always great to see your improvements to the site! I was shocked to see it hail there! Didn't know that happened in Portugal. Cheers & looking forward to your next update!
@@crispindry2815 I meant what I said since they are part of the "One Army" working toward the goal of improving "Project Kamp" ~so laboring "troops", rather than just there to perform or entertain :p
You should definitely try the damn idea. If you simply put a few of the big stones in the middle of the river, you can damn the river and get a nice little pool. I have built such damns as a child in mountain rivers and the result is pretty robust and won't impact the nature a lot because it just raises the level like half a meter. But this already changes the bathing experience a lot.
I would also put a removable dam in place as well, not only do you get a deeper place to swim and cool off, it will also increase the ground water around the area.
I have a pice of advise for you! Buy some machetes. They are perfect for that type of enviroment. It was hard watching you cutting twigs with shears, machete will make quick work of all types of small trees. It will make cutting small trees faster beacuse you wouldn't need to go to grab a chainsaw. Just carry machete in sheath! It is primary tool of people leaving in a jungles for a reason! I would also recommend getting some old military clothes! They can be found for cheap (you can buy German army jacket for about 4 dollars) And they are really good for protecting you from thorns and twigs you will not regret using them even on sunny Day. I love your videos!
Fantastic little creek, looks great! all you need now is a few upcycled paddle boards/kayaks/swans! lol A hedge cutter/heavy rake is super handy for flying through brambles and torns, minimizing the worst torn snags/scrapes!
Loved this episode! The last part was great, Rita's smile/laugh is so contagious. Definitely think you guys should deepen that section of the stream/creek so you don't have to make a dam. (Or maybe making a dam would be much less work..?)
You both have great moms! It is wonderful to see so much effort rewarded with success in the end, what a difference between the start and the end! You mentioned a dam to increase the waters depth, another possibility that might take less effort would be to simply dig an area of the creek deeper, or maybe a combination of the two? I love to see your progress! See you in the next video. Cheers!
We bought a small derelict farm in central Portugal about six years ago, watching this reminds me of how the locals from the village used to watch us as we struggled to clear land, heavy duty strimmers with the bramble cutter blade required my neighbor gave me my first one after watching me struggling with one like yours for hours lol and the local style hoe combined with lots of heavy clothes boots gloves etc and get ready to be amazed just how fast things grow in Portugal it's phenomenal. It's been fantastic experience though.
Mummies are just great !!! The ‘four seasons in one day’ weather seems to be spreading through many countries … coming from Ireland I’m used to this phenomenon… I really do not see how anyone can argue against global warming ??? The wee pool is great for you all ! … this small creek could be dammed up a bit in the future, to give a bigger, deeper pool … have a good productive week … 🙏☘️😘
great video, instead of a dam that will block nature, dig out the bottom and sides to make your pool, might be more work but in my head at least it seems better for the creek, also less chance of a dam break , or complaints from down stream. Thanks for the great content. Best wishes.
Nice work guys, your moms are awesome! a small dam and an overshot waterwheel would give you a swimming hole and enough energy to pump water uphill for irrigation.
Hi there! I got ideas you have running river, you can make waterfall. You can make dam, you can save those water for garden or you can save it for drinking and cooking household chores, you can even do farming😁😁😁👍👍
That tree should be quite happy now not being choked out by all that bramble and undergrowth. I feel you with the hail. I live in the Midwest US and it hails here all summer during severe storms causing lots of property damage. The largest stone I’ve seen personally was the size of a grapefruit.
Of course, it's your homestead and will be entirely up to you, but if it was me I think I would go downstream a little way and put a small cofferdam in that would backup the water that flowed down through there making it a little bit deeper.
Wow you guys are doing a fantastic job! For the overgrown bushes that you guys work so hard on my suggestion would be to see if anybody in the area has a herd of goats! Those buggers will go through those bushes like nobody’s business is saving you guys tons of time cleaning up areas!
Lovely video. Enjoyed the satisfaction of the finished product. Please consider building a wall to dam the water up to have an awesome natural pool. Some natural rocks in place and concrete will do wonders. Hope to see that soon.
I am probably not the first one to come up with the idea, but you could build some kind of a beaver dam with some of the branches. That would also widen up your stream, which seams to be quite narrow due to the high banks.
Admire the Mom's support to their kids n enjoying what they do. We hope to travel to Portugal soon. If we pass by Coimbra. Can we drop by to see your property as we too plan to settle in Portugal
Forest for fish has a lot of videos on developing best management practices around lakes and streams. Making a fish pond could be cheap. Use wood to make aquiclude.
Hi , when the weather is cooler it would be a good idea to clear more along the stream for faster running water which would make it even more cleaner and fresher.🇦🇺🙋♀️
With just a very small dam made of small concrete sides with a slot in the center that you slid wooden slats in to make the water rise. You could have a nice deep area to swim in. Great job.
A dam is a brilliant idea. It's a lovely little spot. Make some sitting arrangements and table for under the tree. A home made wind chime may be a nice touch too... (thank me later) Eventually, a roofed structure, like a gazebo of sorts... Just keeping you busy😅 Thumbs up & subscribed
Happy people ... despite the hard work. That flow of water is gold ... you could easily creat a natural pool there with fresh water all the time ...amazing spot.
yeah, I was thinking they could dam it up, dig out a bit of a pond, and have an overflow continung the natural path of the water, then combine it with your idea and generate some hydroelectric -- EDIT: I just saw they mention the idea of a dam near the end of the video (always watch the whole vid before commenting, I always forget to do that :)
To slow down the proces of overgrowing again use a strong grass seed to let grass win over the weeds and thorn bushes. Strong seeds are not garden grass types but the ones farmers use on cattle land. Dont know about Portugal but your home country the Netherlands these seeds are very easy to purchase in large quantities.
I call it 'extreme strimming' I ended up with all strimming lashes on my legs and sent photos of my legs to the family for posterity. Make a picture folder on your computer and put in photos as a reminder of all the wasp stings, eye bruises, sunburn, nettle rashes and cut fingers and when you look back later on it will make you laugh and make you realize that it is the journey which is the most fun not the destination and that living in the moment is what matters.
You should dam it up slightly so you have a small pooling area but the water can still flow over after it gets to a certain depth...we used to do it as kids with rocks.
If you like to see us cleaning up stuff. watch this previous video ruclips.net/video/bN0ltucfelg/видео.html

@@bobjob3632 oh yes haha sorry. The damn idea also sounds good though.

Indeed if you check in Portugal most of the so called "Praia Fluvial" are built in the local villages and used as natural pools.

A damn dam on that damn creek!
As Alice in Chains once sung: Dam that river
What a delicious place to sit in, on a hot summer day, maybe with a beach umbrella....!

Very cool. You could build a small 2 ft tall dam down by the steps and would really be able to cool off.
A few well placed rocks upstream a bit could make a nice waterfall that would be even louder. Stone or timber steps.
