It isn't important whether the top is still spinning or not.
It's important that Cobb isn't looking anymore.
- Christopher Nolan
A pithy line, but not the end all. Because it would only be a few minutes-an hour at most-before he came back inside and saw it spinning or not.
IMO it’s clear that it’s no longer a dream (Nolan is not in it for the tired Sixth Sense type endings, and it would be pretty lame to go through the whole plane and airport scene, get to see the kids’ faces, have Seito’s business presumably flourishing, etc.) to never have any of that have any meaning IRL. And of course the kicker is Caine saying Nolan explained to him that any scene he’s in is reality. (Nolan I’m sure was displeased with Caine for publicizing that, but Caine was an old man, and his slip of the tongue is our gain IMO).
@@HoyaSaxaSD also you have to remember that the spining top isn't his totem but his late wife's. His totem was his ring that he wore while dreaming and here he doesn't wear it so he is in fact in reality
@@emmanueledouard2191 but it is a hint. and the top will stop. it is already waggling.
it stopped spinning, it finally came out
He wears his wedding ring in his dreams. He’s not wearing his ring in this scene, so it’s not a dream.
This ending IS a 10/10, I agree Movieclips
@Divenaldo Penaldo twas a joke

@Divenaldo Penaldo woooooosh
Liked the way Saito suddenly remembers his deal with Cobb and makes the call.Beautiful movie.
My biggest regret in life is not watching this movie in theater.
me too 😭
I wish i watched this at movie theaters 😞
Same but I was 10 or sum lol
I watched this on first day and then 3 days later with my friend who was on vacation when the movie came out. The audience had it at zero dba, you could have heard the heartbeat of people and then the different reactions based on how did each one of them take the ending :D It was fascinating. Shock, cursing, smile, nod, satisfaction.
You gotta be lucky and patient my friend. Me and my brother finally got to watch it for its 10th anniversary right when the pandemic was in swing. Best experience of my life. Now I just gotta watch it in IMAX
Fun Fact: Michael Caine stated that despite the ending leaving it ambiguous as to whether it's a dream, that any scene featuring him is set in the real world, meaning that it's not an illusion!
I thought Nolan said to Michael that any scene he was in was real in an attempt to help him understand the story (He thought it was confusing). That’s what I heard.
The end tho..
Then why are the kids literally right where he left them, in the same clothes, and have not grown?
I haven't seen the context of this supposed (not saying it didn't happen) conversation... but Yahya Abdul-Mateen II indicated in his Emmy speech that he was playing the part of God...which doesn't make much sense when you digest the jokes the Silk Specter tells him on the show - nor does it apply in the preceding movie (which is directly addressed)...or in any of the comics for that matter (in fact they indicate the opposite to me, although do touch on very obvious parallels). Sometimes actors are told certain things to help them with delivery...or they just get confused - like Zoolander acceptance speech confused. Sometimes we all have different interpretations. Maybe Michael Cain had a different interpretation as well. That is the some of the power that art can posses. Fun Fact: beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
@@crowcrap5303 they aren't in the same clothes. look more closely. in their other appearances the girl doesn't have the white undershirt on and the dress doesn't have spaghetti straps, and the boy's shirt doesn't have the purple stripes.
I wish they could release this in theaters again.
They did in 2020 most cinemas
Mines did. We getting Mad Max soon too.
@Divenaldo Penaldo it was nominated for vfx and production design, but hasn't won any YET
@Divenaldo Penaldo it won an oscar for sound mixing too but yeah, they should have won more oscars
Yeah man a perfect ending
I wish I could experience this movie for the first time again
Same. I watched it a lone in theater at the time.
I just watched it last weekend for the first time and I have planned to watch it since last year. I can say that I don’t have any words for that masterpiece. Absolutely 10/10
I still remember the whole crowd gasping and sighing when the movie cut off in the theaters haha, such an amazing movie
It didn’t matter if he was still dreaming, he was happy. That’s all the matters in the end. A truly amazing movie. One of the best I’ve seen.
It was about finding catharsis after his wife's death. He couldn't see their faces in the dream because he didn't think, subconsciously, that he deserved to. Seeing their faces is a sign that he has moved past his guilt.
But he doesn’t care if this a dream or not then it is egoistic to leave his real children to suffer as they become orphans
@@sardonyfilor6886 It'd take longer for that to happen in the dream world, at least.
I love roberts subtle glance over to cobb - perfectly showing the idea of thinking you’ve seen someone somewhere before
One of the most interesting and unique endings off all time of this great movie!!!!
Honestly one of the most interesting and unique movies of all time not just the ending
Christopher Nolan does not understand human emotion- Hack film critics. I cried when I saw this in theatres, an excellent story of a man who will do anything to return to those he loves.
Someone really wrote that? Damn
No way watching Memento, The batman trilogy, This Interstellar, and Tenet shows you how well he understands it
I can watch this movie 100 times and it would still be exciting.
I was lucky to have seen this film last year. In IMAX for the very first time. It was an experience I'll never forget.
I had to watch this movie like 8 times to understand it
And even tried to replicate it
8 times? Inception is really easy to understand. 2 watches are enough to understand.
Pretty hard trying to replicate putting yourself 4 layers deep into dreaming lol.
You tried to replicate it? 😂 What
@@hypernova6930 with lucid dreams
It can work
@@LeonardoKlotz yes thats true, but to actually lucid dream is a difficult task.. I think there are devices that you can wear on your forehead that will let u do it. But then again its experimental and the science behind is not really concrete.. Anyways i hope you are successful and also share your experience whenever you manage to do it 😁
Important note:
The top is Mal's totem.
While Cobb's is his wedding ring.
Since Cobb didn't wear his ring in the ending, therefore it is in the real world.
Can't believe this movie was released 11 years ago...
The immigration officer is Michael Gaston, who plays the character of Gale Bertram in 'The Mentalist'.
And he killed the 30 seconds he was on screen. He was perfect for this role. That inexpressive face he executes so well is crucial to the plot and the fate of Cobb's re-entry to the US. Very short screen time but very effective acting !
Yes ik. Good actor.
I really don't care if this was a dream or not. This has to be one of the most happiest action movie endings of all time. Even though I haven't seen it in theaters because I was 6 years old but I had a movie night and that was a really good movie and ending too.
That's actually the point of the ambiguity.
It no longer matters to him whether he's in a dream or not.
Happy ending where he left his real kids and made them orphans? (If it is dream of course, I believe it’s reality cuz few things pointing on it)
I remember watched Inception on the Theatre, the idea, the plot, the complexity, the action, the soundtrack are mindblowing. I'm not the person who could easily being affected and swayed by movies, but Inception really gave me chills and anxious. A true masterpiece which wrapped in a clever way and ended beautifully. Inception's leaving a deep impression in audience's mind, which many movies hardly leave any single footprints.

Nolan always leaves clues to the audience so that they have to apply their mind to understand the scenes. He would not put everything in dialogue straightforward.
1. In one of the scenes when Cobb explains to Ariadne how he cannot change the moment when he is about to see his children's faces no matter what. But in the end he was able to see and meet them is sufficient for him to realise that it was reality no matter the top topples or keeps spinning.
2. The top was also about to stop spinning as one can see its axis tilted and hear the toppling sound.
The scene was cut just before the toppling is a trademark of Nolan movies which leaves audiences in awe.
Brilliant ending to a brilliant movie. Bravo, Mr. Nolan!
Its a Tradition to watch this video every month ❤
One of the greatest movies of all-time!
A lot of people forget the spinner isn't his totem. It's his wedding ring.
The spinner was Mal's totem, right?
So? What's the significance of the wedding ring then?
@@Checkmate1138it "tells" Cobb whether he is in the real world or not. In this case, no ring = real world.
Ive never seen the whole film yet but the fact that the top starts to lose its energy to snip (wiggling) makes me think that he is in the real world
One of my top 3 favorite movies of all time. So layered, so emotionally powerful, and this ending by Hans Zimmer is an absolute masterpiece.
Dom ignores the totem because he no longer cares whether it's a dream or not. But there isn't any plot point hanging to suggest this scene is a dream.
this ending is somehow powerful i love it

Such a nice unique story. Only Hollywood can churn out such masterpieces repeatedly. As usual, the great Leonardo DiCaprio has a knack for landing up in the most special movies in film history. Everything he does has a special memorable touch. He looked quite dapper in suits in this fantasy film. He is easily one of this millenium's brightest stars. I wish him a long and successful future career in films till he rests in peace. I so wish I could meet this gifted actor once before I die. He's been a great actor since he was a young teen and since I'm a big fan of his, I try to watch almost everything he gets into, even if it isn't always the best.
The ending might be the most intriguing movie.
Still can't conclude on it. Such a great tactic to pull on us by the creators. Brilliant really!
Only Hans Zimmer could make picking up luggage exciting.
Got to see this in IMAX when it came out. It blew my mind at age 11. What a frigging movie this is. 🙌🏾
One of my favorite movies of the last decade and I loved the ending

Watched it twice in London theatres. One of the best endings in cinematic history!!!
yes it's interesting when a film has an ambiguous ending, but knowing how it actually ends makes me like it more, makes it feel like the writer actually knows what they want. Inception is a damn good film and getting a definitive answer on the ending made me happier than just deciding which one I liked more.
The soundtrack to Mass Effect is just so incredible. As evidenced by its used in so many important scenes.
For all the people wondering if he is still in the dream he is not. Whenever he is in the dream world he would have the wedding ring on his left hand and at 0:17 when he gives the passport over there is no ring.
Every scene with Michael Caine (Prof. Stephen Miles) is reality. He is never once appeared in a dream.
I still fight with my brother to this day because he thinks the totem wasn’t going to fall
It wobbles just as the screen cuts to black.
the point isnt wether or not it falls, but that he decides he doesnt care what the result is and goes to live whatever life this is
I rarely cry in movies, and this still didn't make me cry, but man was I close
I love the debate around this ending is literally centred around peoples lack of understanding of certain elements of this film. The ending is real, the totem at the end wobbles and that is the indication because they say earlier in the film "it'll just spin and spin" so the fact it wobbles atall shows its reality. For people who want to bring in the arguement of "His ring is his totem the top is his wifes", totems aren't bound to singular people, it gets explained very early on when the girl needs her own totem that only the person who's totem it is can know about it, so it can't be tampered with. The fact Cobb now has his wifes totem means only he and her will know the totem and still be valid to not be tampered with because of her death, if Cobb died and left the totem to one of his children they could use it too as they'd be the only one alive who knows of it, that is the point of the totems, not some soul bound commitment like the totem is sentient, its a tool, similar to codewords in spy movies that only the spy and his contact know so they can identify eachother.
this film hits differently when you are on a spiritual journey in your own life as well.
Yup, this movie was about more than just dreams. It was Nolan making a metaphysical/spiritual movie without outright stating it.
The music is so thought provoking
0:57 Omg!💓💓💓💓💓Leo, you are so elegant!💝💝💝💝💝
one of the best films ever made
i don't care about all other movies for me this movie is BEST!
God, that feeling of coming home back ❤❤
Such a beautiful ending, the soundtrack works so well. Inception is truly one of Christopher Nolan's best
A true masterpiece👍
Movie is a MASTERPIECE ⭐⭐
This movie is a master piece.
One of the most satisfying endings to any film…no…story…ever told. Hans comin’ in clutch again!
Perfection. Nolan needs to get this mojo back.
After watching this movie. I thought I was in a dream and pinched myself.
I was behind the scenes for this scene, the top did topple!
08/08/2024 My maternal grandmother passed away last October and she has since become my totem. Every time I see her in my dreams they start to collapse and my instinct is to wake up immediately.
Should of seen my reaction to this in the cinema.
I know its not all a dream, because at the end you very clearly hear it fall over, and you see it start to topple, if it werent real it wouldnt even move a bit out of the spin
For me it's very strange the time the top continue to spinning. In the others scenes in the movie, the top falls very quickly. In the end scene, he continues to spinning for much more time...
You're right, It isn't a dream. Michael Caine revealed that any scene with him in it is real, Michael is in the final scene.
@@sammayo473 i knew that, but i dont even need that to know, it was obvious anyways
Ambiguous endings >>> Happy endings
ew
Those Bananas look delicious. It would be weird if a Sound Guy snacks on one of them
It's a shame I could only watch clips of this movie but not the whole film in its entirety. My son also agrees that Inception was a great movie and Leo DiCaprio's performance was the icing on the cake plus all the thick gooey layers underneath.
You can buy the DVD or Bluray
When I saw this in theaters with my friends, when the film cut to black, my friend literally cried out "BULL****!" in frustration
The riddle for the ages.
The ending is not ambiguous, but it is already clear based on two reasons: 1) the spinner keeps spinning, 2) the children do not age beyond what Cob last remembered...it is indeed sad, something to be avoided but that is how it is.
They confirmed any scene with the grandpa in it is real; the grandpa is in this scene, so this is real. Why the kids look the same, I don't know.
(Fun fact: the audience wasn't supposed to know that trick, it was supposed to be left to us to decide. Now we know for sure this is real though.)
1🇺🇸🌈🌲💪🥷🏽🏈 ITS COOL BECAUSE THE ENDING BEFORE THAT ONE HE TAKES A LAST BREATH AND SAYS MOTHER I WAS WRONG AND DIES...THE OTHER ONE HIS CHAUFER ISNT AT THE AIRPORT...
The 2 options are
1.He is in real life because he seas the kids faces
2. The title card is saying that it is inception
True master piece
Such an awesome movie. It's one of my top five favorite films of Christopher Nolan's (along with The Dark Knight trilogy, Interstellar, Dunkirk, and the latest Tenet movie). And the ending to the movie Inception was fantastic. So can you please upload those two Christopher Nolan flicks (like Interstellar and Tenet for instance), along with Johnny Mnemonic with Keanu Reeves, Wolf with Jack Nicholson and Michelle Pfeiffer, and Goodfellas with Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro, and Joe Pesci?
Great choices. I would also recommend The Prestige and Memento if you haven't seen them yet 👍
I've seen the movie The Prestige with Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale last year in February 2020. It was an excellent movie. So I liked the movie a lot. It's one of my top five favorite films of Hugh Jackman's (along with Christine Bale's, Michael Caine's, and Andy Serkis's). But I haven't seen the movie Memento yet with Guy Pearce.
I don't even think its a mystery it clearly started wobbling drastically and you could just hear it fall right before it ended. It's not as big of a mystery as it's made to be imo
nice that Alfred was there to pick him up from the airport
2:13 The Cobb's children had lost their mother😢😢😢😢😢
Leo is such a good looking person!
1. His totem was his wedding ring, which shows he is in the real world
2. Micheal Caine's character never appears in dream worlds
3. The point is that hes happy and can move on reguardless of if hes awake or not.
Hans Zimmer - Time
AMAZING
Listen closely to what James(Cobb son) says at the end.
There's a continuity error in this clip. In one shot Cobb picls up his daughter and in the next one he's carrying his son. Btw it's one of my favorite movies.
Sometimes truth isn't good enough, sometimes people need to have their faith rewarded.
- Batman
If the top spins perpetually in a dream, then the simple fact that it begins to wobble is all of the evidence I need to know that Cobb is in reality at the end of the film.
Michael Caine, who plays the grandfather, said that any scene with him in it is real.
As Michael Caine explained, if his character is in the scene, then it is the reality
I like this movie
Jim Carrey removed a cap on his tooth to make his scenes in Inception look like he chipped his tooth. Especially in the Tokyo scenes.
Although he held his daughter in his arms at the first scene, after the camera showed Miles, we saw his son in his arms🤫🤫
The best final shot in a film ever probably?
Lovely ending!

I don't know who Saito's connections are, but they sure acted fast. Like 20 minutes later after getting the call Cobb was allowed to enter the country 😂
