Definitely believe if after the jig hits the water, the reel SHOULD NOT BE 'ENGAGED' (spool locked/bail closed)! Reason being...as that lure sinks and the line becomes taunt-the lure is traveling BACK TOWARDS the fisher, thus shortening the actual length of the cast! Letting the line come off the spool/opened bail-allows that bait to reach the bottom closest under where it entered the water; therefore, keeping the bait/jig in the 'strike zone' longer! This was clearly demonstrated during several boats shows utilizing a clear tank (75'? long x 10' deep) and the rear portion of a bass boat on the same platform.
