- Health economics is about health and money. We don’t have all the money of the world to spend on health. So, how much and how do we have to invest in health for all? Health economists try to provide answers to these and other questions. And with what we do, I argue that we make the world a better place. Shouldn’t we all try that? This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
I disagree with the reason of "altruism" for contributing more to the system as a rich person. Improving health outcomes for the poor leads to improvements of the lives of the poor....which leads to more social cohesion and decreases in crime.....so if you don't want to live in fear of being burgled/looted/mugged, then contributing to improving the lives of those less fortunate than you indirectly improves your life and the lives of your children. So not altruism....pure selfish interest of living in a healthy, happy, safe society without safe compounds and security guards and heavy-handed police
Thank you for expressing your view, I find it very insightful. I wonder how this can be indoctrinated into society, especially in third world countries.

We need to strive to connect in a way where humanity becomes "as one man with one heart," meaning that each of us feels everyone and wishes for the benefit of all.
This is beautiful ❤ inspired me to look into health economics even more thank you!
I liked this speech very much! Thanks to organizators and Lieven, but how can pharmaceutical companies succeed without "sickness healthcare" system? Probably they should invest more money in preventive drugs, that's the future of pharmacoeconomics ..
The best preventative drugs are eating little, having good variety, drinking lots of water, freshly squeezed fruit juices, taking regular exercise, and reducing stress by not overworking and engaging with nature. Unfortunately, our relentless pursuit of capital makes such a lifestyle impossible to achieve.
this was very interesting and learned a lot. thank you for sharing
i love health Economics

Smokers actually make a positive contribution to the economy because most people actually use a similar amount of resources in their last year of death! Smokers die earlier and use less pensions.
The taxes on cigarettes is larger than the associated cost of smoking in the UK
