I was searching 'you learn to live without' and RUclips was like: Did you mean ''you learn to live without Idina Menzel''. Well of course not, you can't live without her.
Honestly it irritates me how undervalued Broadway is. The songs are most certainly written better than pretty much all the music on the radio. And honestly it is much harder to perform eight shows on a stage each week than to film behind the camera for a few hours a day. Actors/Actresses on Broadway aren't given enough credit or recognition for their work. John Travolta's flub at the Oscars proves that.
Is there a recording of the version with these lyrics below? And if yes, where can I hear it? You find the coat and tie you thought you'd given to good will You stumble along a long lost set of chess You see him there in corners and in closets and on shelves And truth be told you'd like to see him less You stumble through the morning but you waken for the day You tell yourself that all is going well But now and then a sense of loss just slams you in the chest You know that no one else can really tell You make it all seem swell
So true. When you share and build a life with another person and you become accustomed to having a safe place to call home with warmth, laughter, belonging, and then one day it's all gone. You grieve and a part of you dies. Then you grieve the other person, the life, the home, the safety, the dreams, the happiness, the comfort, the day to day things, and that part of yourself. Then you learn to live without any of it anymore, including that part of you that will never live again.
A few years ago I was essentially on my deathbed. Hospitalized for months at a time, slowly starving, the doctors couldn't find a diagnosis. My twin sister was on that cot next to me every single night. We spent our 18th birthday in that hospital room. She was too young for that kind of responsibility but took it anyway. When she finally took a break, she went to New York to see some shows. She saw If/Then and called me in tears because she had heard this song and was terrified that this was what she'd be forced to do. I think she wanted to make sure I was alive. She gave me the name of the song and I listened to a strange echo of what her life would be without me. It's a strange feeling, the same one I get even now when my best friend told me he wrote a speech for my funeral, one that had him in such a fit of grief he threw it out. My sister told me one day that the song "sara" by Fleetwood Mac is impossible for her to listen to because that's the song she'd play at my wake. It is an impossible look into the world that exists after I leave it. And this song is filled with such a strange fear and a strange strength, it's a wonder that these writers know how to bottle such daunting emotions into 3 minutes and 44 seconds. I'm so happy to be alive, but I've seen my death, and I've seen the world move on past me, and while it is a sorrow it's also strangely comforting that we all learn to live with and live without.
Idina Menzel has such a strong and beautiful singing voice. I was very fortunate to watch her in If/Then and I was blown away. To tell you the truth, I was in tears by the end. Haha :) She is amazing and has so much talent. GO QUEEN IDINA!!!!
+Alex L. I went into If/Then knowing what I was in for. It was its last week on broadway, and I had listened to it a fair bit since it first came out. I laughed, I teared up, and I felt all of the emotions. I also felt the ephemeral nature of a scene, knowing that the laughter wouldn't last for more than a few moments before heartache set in. I enjoyed the reactions of those who weren't as spoiled as I in the theater, those who were experiencing it in its rawest, truest form.
I can't believe that most of the songs made famous by music video, autotune, and such explicit lyrics that has no sense at all has more attention than Idina :( I mean I know everyone have their own favorite genres, but still Idina sings from the heart that you can really feel the emotions
Oh gosh, I looked up 'most emotional Broadway songs' and this was in the list. I love all the other If/Then songs I've heard but this one is the best so far! Thank you Idina!! Also 'you learn to speak so calmly when your heart would like to scream and shout' this basically describes my life, so thank you to the songwriter (Tom Kitt) for summing this up so well!
I love this so much. It's a gorgeous song and there is so much emotion in this video. I love seeing Carmel and the orchestra there for the recording too. This is such an awesome cast album for an incredible show!!
Out of everyone I saw, hers was my favorite female based performance, but I can understand why the other girl won, plus Idina already has a tony, so it's all good :)
this songs always tears me up........it was so sad watching her do this live cause you truly felt her pain......amazing show. So glad I saw her with Anthony Rapp and James Snyder
I think she makes sure of that! She really wants to protect her privacy! but I believe she's underestimating how much people just want to thank her and leave.
This song is so true. All of us can recognise himself in the lyrics. And the interpretation is awesome. We can see she is affected by the song. Excellent, as always.
This song is so beautiful with a such powerful message. The way I see this song out of context in the show is how in life we can't always get the things we want.
I'm crying so hard. This reminds me of my best friend. My life. She died last year in my arms. But till now I haven't learned to live without her. I miss her every day. So much. I'm not sure if it will ever pass, if I will ever learn to live without her. She was my life.

Awesome musicians but the lyrics make no sense...nobody knows where the train goes, but there are only two stops? Well then, that's where it goes, right?
I was searching 'you learn to live without' and RUclips was like: Did you mean ''you learn to live without Idina Menzel''. Well of course not, you can't live without her.
Thanks for that, I didn't realize it ! Couldn't agree more !
We need to make a new Sorcerer's Stone and give her Elixir of Life so that never happens

Exactly!
true
"You sit a spell a queen upon her throne"
Idina Menzel is Queen.
what does it means?
léo milhorini in this context “a spell” means an unspecified length of time.

She. Should. Have. Won. I demand a recount.

I saw it twice on Broadway, a beautiful powerful show. Her vocals literally shake the theater.
Idina is one of the most incredible performers
I can't believe that most of the songs made famous by music video, autotune, and such explicit lyrics that has no sense at all has more attention than Idina :( I mean I know everyone have their own favorite genres, but still Idina sings from the heart that you can really feel the emotions

I think she makes sure of that! She really wants to protect her privacy! but I believe she's underestimating how much people just want to thank her and leave.
I saw her live just a couple days ago and I cried so much it was beautiful.
This song is so true. All of us can recognise himself in the lyrics. And the interpretation is awesome. We can see she is affected by the song.
Excellent, as always.

This song is so beautiful with a such powerful message. The way I see this song out of context in the show is how in life we can't always get the things we want.
This song really got me through when my husband died.
I'm crying so hard. This reminds me of my best friend. My life. She died last year in my arms. But till now I haven't learned to live without her. I miss her every day. So much. I'm not sure if it will ever pass, if I will ever learn to live without her. She was my life.

I love Idina Menzel.

They should record this (video as well as audio) and release the DVD as soon as it's not playing anymore ;( please?

Was that Anthony Rapp there too???
Yup! :D
Idina in glasses
i can see elsa singing this song completely
what is this song about?
+El Tigrera It's the two different versions of Elizabeth singing about where they are. One is successful and rich in money and in time, the other has her two boys but no husband. Both of them are going to bed alone and learning to live without.
I wonder what "You learn how to amuse yourself" means... xD
+john ttee I'm 18 and my comment was ironic, I perfectly know what it means xD
Kristen Quigley, I know exactly what you mean. This is a hard song to listen too especially if you put two and two together. If you know what I mean.
Plants
I need to learn to live without a Boyfriend lol.
Awesome musicians but the lyrics make no sense...nobody knows where the train goes, but there are only two stops? Well then, that's where it goes, right?
