- In this week's video, I am making a simple, elegant, yet efficient knife organizer insert for kitchen drawers. It has two tiers that allow for storage of longer knives as well as shorter knives. If you don't have a way to organize your kitchen knives, I highly recommend you make one. I've used it for 4-5 months and really love it.
If you’re into DIY, woodworking, or like to live vicariously through other people making stuff, please consider supporting my work by watching the videos and liking/subscribing to my channel. I’m on a mission to post weekly videos with a mixture of beginner and advanced projects. If you want to know more about a specific process, jig, or tool, please leave a comment below.
Hope all of you enjoy this video! Thank you so much for watching!
PS -Did you kinda sorta get the batman reference? If so, leave a comment below and I'll let you know if you got my line of thinking.

Look at my wood and not the crocs - classic. Great video
Gotta keep an eye on the prize.
Put that on a t-shirt right - hilarious!
I didn’t hear Crocs…I thought he said crotch. Lol
Miyabi knives. Nice
First time viewer...enjoyed the video.
That shim is a fantastic idea for making consistent kerf cuts
Thanks! I’ve always struggled to make consistent kerf and sort of played it by ear on “close enough”. Haven’t seen anyone use this method but it works really well for a lot of situations
Love that you explain all you do. So many offer no instructions at all.
Really appreciate your perspective Suman! We’re all part of the continuum, just contributing as we can to our own small circles hoping to make waves.
I really want to see the magnetic one haha! But it's a great build!
Really like your honesty.
Love the magnetic version!! You should market it!
Great video and build man! While I would agree that a lot of what we make has likely been made in the past. I would also suggest that much like a painting, each piece of art created by a woodworker is completely unique. And as woodworkers we are certainly artists, and what we make are works of art.
Not only is your knife holder beautiful, functional, and uniquely crafted by your own hands, it will probably last a lifetime. The one from Walmart, or Amazon cannot make any of those claims.
Well done my friend!
I agree completely! Just because it has been made in the past, does not mean we cannot bring something novel to the process as creators.
That is beautiful! I need to make on of those. I love the walnut with the magnets- that is pure genius. I am going to make one in direct defiance of your urging.
lol I want to say good luck but all I can say is: be safe. Some cuts on that can be sketchy. If you can, buy imperial magnets so you can use a regular ol forestner bit. I had to CNC the recess because nothing I had would drill the hole quite well enough for it.
You just gave me a great idea. Thanks so much, storing this for later. And NO. No idea is original, but it’s ok. Mark twain quote below. Keep up the great work.
“There is no such thing as a new idea. It is impossible. We simply take a lot of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope. We give them a turn and they make new and curious combinations. We keep on turning and making new combinations indefinitely; but they are the same old pieces of colored glass that have been in use through all the ages.
That is an excellent quote! Yes, highly recommend making this knife organizer. I find it immensely helpful in the kitchen. Plus keeps the knives out of reach of children.
If the project isn’t unique, your content can still have your own style and spin. Although it’s not required, I think you’re still adding newness with your commentary.
I agree, we can always add our unique perspective to the platform. Happy Friday on a Tuesday!
Pretty cool. Just found your Chanel, well this video. Looks awesome. Do you have any plans or measurements In metric’s. Thanks and best regards from Germany. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great content! It's criminal this doesn't have more views. I love the walnut one & the straight line cuts - it looks much more clean and modern than others I've seen. Bravo and keep up the good work
Thanks Evan! Glad you enjoyed the video. One day, the algo will show some love. haha
Cool project! Good video.
Thank you! Cheers!
Looks like an original design to me. 😊 Never seen one quite like it. Great idea and great video
Feel free to steal my “original” idea and make one for yourself. It really is pretty great way to organize knives and out of reach of children.
You are doing a fine job here on your channel. Thanks so much for the time and effort you put into producing excellent content. Subscribed a couple weeks ago and look forward to watching more. Here's to you and your channel growing as big as you care to make it. Great woodworking and God Bless.
Thanks Mark! I am so glad you're enjoying the videos. I will say, the absolute BEST part about making youtube content are the awesome people that watch and comment on the videos. Seeing the community on this channel grow from 0 to even where it is today is aa humbling and fun experience. Thank you for watching and commenting. It is much appreciated. Cheers!
Wow I like that project . Honestly I have never seen a knife block like that , and part of me wants to build the magnetic one just cause you said not to except I have nowhere to put it so I'll just marvel at your LOL
Haha. That magnetic one was a true pain to make. I shot and edited this entire video in a day (was a personal goal). And the magnetic version took half of the day. Not worth it. It is kind of cool though.
Just found your channel. Great 👍 content. Keep it up!
Thank you! Appreciate ya
Very nice looking knife organizers! Liked and subscribed.
Thanks! I use one in my kitchen and still love it. Hope you’ll make one for your home.
Thats really cool. Very nice craftsmanship. Taking it to the next level. Great job.
Thanks Mike! Loved the variety on your build this week.
@@WoodcraftBySuman thanks Suman. Are you a teacher? You do an excellent job of explaining things. You also seem very comfortable on camera. Your channel will take off, I'm sure. Keep those videos coming. I enjoy them.
@@Woodcraft716 That is a wonderful compliment. No, I do not have any teaching background or camera presence. If you look at my earlier videos, I was more of an akward duck. What I lack in presentation skills, I make up by doing retakes. Haha.
Wear those crocs in the shop while standing on concrete while you're young. In 30 years you'll have a harder time of it, you'll see what I mean.
Great project and I've never seen a knife block like that one either as some have commented. Did you think about a finish for the wood? Food grade mineral oil or salad bowl finish?
Great work as usual Suman.
Haha. I rarely wear them unless its a little hot and humid in the area.
I've actually been using my knife block without any finish. Though, it probably is a good idea to apply a finish. I'd go with the conventional route of mineral oil and possibly apply a beeswax + mineral oil paste.
screw the amazon mass production version. yours is made with real craftmanship and makes you proud whenever you use it. 💪 great project, this goes straight on the endless list of future projects! 😄
Haha. Thanks! If you do end up making it, pls let me know what you think and how it went. I'd love to see it.
@WoodcraftBySuman will do, bro! 😊
Chin up pal, your uniqueness is undeniable. Great job as usual. Now go buy safer woodworking shoes (haha) Really enjoying your channel! Keep up the great work!
Hey thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. I will say though, Crocks could make a killing by putting a tiny sliver of metal at the toe and call it "summer woodworking shoes". All the ventilation for sawdust to get into.
You're right about the kerf width. Tried it one time and 0.1344" won't work.
Its gotta be 0.1345". You know, approximately. lol
It’s not that people put dirty knives in a holder so much as wet/nearly dry knives combined with the occasional errant crumbs etc can age into mold. Or so I’ve been told. I’ve never had that issue myself but if I’ve made one knife holder that gets yucky, I can make a new one and replace it. Problem solved.
Ahh that's a good way to look at it. I like your way of thinking: "make a new one and replace it". haha
What kind of wood is that?
hard maple. The dark one is American black walnut.
This really needs a finish. It's going to get grungy without one. Don't waste your nice work.
