  • In Uganda, only half of the population has access to an all-weather road within an approximate walking distance of two kilometres, which implies that a vast proportion of farmers are still disconnected from local, regional and global markets - but this trend will soon change.
    The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has recently embarked on the implementation of Uganda’s Third National Development Plan (NDP III) to support the country’s development opportunities in agriculture and manufacturing over the next five years.
    The Roads Agency will upgrade 2,500 kilometres of strategic roads to tarmac and add an extra 600 kilometres of low cost seals coupled with a vigorous maintenance programme, among other priorities. As with many things in life, there are already early winners in this quest - in Amuru and Adjumani districts, the long wait for an all-weather access is over.
    These agricultural districts, known for the production of coffee, sugarcane and beans, are having the 66-kilometre Atiak-Laropi road upgraded from gravel (murram) to paved standard with a grant contribution of EUR 50 million (Ush200 billion) from the European Union and counterpart funding of EUR 11.9 million (Ush48 billion) from the Ugandan Government.
    The road, which is being widened to a 7-metre carriageway and 2-metre shoulders, starts from Atiak at a junction off the Gulu-Atiak-Nimule road, traverses through Adjumani town, and ends at the Umi ferry landing site on River Nile. UNRA is supervising the road upgrading works that commenced in June 2020.
