I always carry small bottle of iodine pills with my filter kit so i can make water safe. Also pretty good for cleaning your water bottle / toothbrush.

old school, that's all we did in the '70's and 80's. Mr. Hippe, the black snake with yellow stripes is a garter. Someday will share my story of how "Squiggles", my pet garter, got loose in my basement resulting in some dissonance in the household. 😄

Read the instructions on the filter, it says to soak them in clean water for 24 hours before use.

For almost two decades I never filtered or treated my water in the Whites. Now I do and always pack some form of chemical treatment as a backup. I had stomach issues in that area my first time I hiked the LT. I had filtered every OZ. It could have also been from trail food, who knows. This all said I would drink from a stream that was not coming from a beaver pond and not give it a second thought. What else can you do?
