I'm from farm and I know little bit about this.
Calves are taken right away from their mothers because doing it later only causes stress to mothers. Not all cows have sence of how to be mother and they can be danger to their baby.
You know how dogs and cats can survive with three legs? Well cattle and other big mammals can't. They're too heavy.
Plus keeping cow as a pet in dairy farm is expensive. You have to pay its food and water and other things to keep her healty and you don't get anything for your own needs.
Sorry about little rant. I want to be dairy farmer and I take this things little bit too serious. Also there can be grammar errors, I'm learning English.
