Episode Summary
"And Now His Watch Is Ended" is the fourth episode of the third season of HBO's fantasy television series Game of Thrones, and the 24th episode of the series. The episode's title comes from a chant made by the Night's Watch at the funeral of a fallen brother while at Craster's Keep."

The moment when Dany says "Dracarys" and the music really kicks in is one of the most badass scenes in TV history.
That sound effect, almost like a dampened cello string, comes back again and again. Amazing effect.

I genuinely like Margaery. She has the ability to be charming and manipulative, but is a good person in general and doesn’t use her power to hurt and walk on innocent people. Like her grandmother, she knows how to not only survive but get ahead, but she doesn’t knock others down to get there. I think she genuinely likes Sansa and wants to help her if she can.
She’s definitely a chess player. She plays the long game. I like her. She is the smartest out of the bunch.

Danny’s offer for them to go back to whatever life they want or to leave her service and be free is genuine and has no expiration date
She knows she needs them to want to fight for her so she’s purposely trying to make it so that way they want to fight for her and not feel like they have to because she knows a swordsman there because they really really respect their queen and want to fight for their queen is so much better than a swordsman who’s there just because he doesn’t know any other way, or because he feels he has to

This episode is when Dany became the main character for many 😂 this shit turns up from this point on.
That's why she's the most popular character on the internet, and because of her we have a series of dragons and Targaryens, while you're crying, but crying like a whore, god doesn't listen.

Danny gave the Unsullied a choice which is more than they have ever been given. They r free to leave or go. Danny gave them their dignity and choice back. Danny knows she needs an army but she also knows that treating the people who ride for you well is the right thing to do. It’s unfair to take her off the honorable list because she used her power the way she does. Tell me exactly how is her freeing 8000 men and asking them to stay because they want to a bad thing? She killed their slave master. Danny is the freer of slaves and deserves respect for what she is doing. Not condemnation.

Not to be dramatic but misogyny is making them think this way. They want her to be so innocent and cute like she was when they first introduced her. They don't want to see her have any power because she's not being feminine enough. It's very weird.
@@khethiwelamula1901 I don't think it's that at all. I think it's that they fear the potential of her going down a dark path. They see foreshadowing and it stirs unease. And they knew the vulnerable, almost innocent state she started from and don't want to see her turn... this was around the time in the show that the same feeling started for many fans. I'd like to think they'd feel the same if she had been a young boy facing the same S.A. struggles and forced lack of power, it's the fact she starts out as such an underdog.

Ramsey is using psychological torture and manipulation which is why he played that whole psychological scenario on Theon. It's mind control techniques, drilling into Theon's head that there is no actual escape. Giving hope then stripping it away. Playing both the savior and the enemy. It really gives an early insight into the psychotic mind of Ramsey.

For me it was the hot tub scene. You find out why he really killed the King. He really is the reason why half of kings landing didn’t die.

The guy with the eyepatch is Beric Dondarrion. Waaaay back in season one, he was one of King Robert's knights, and in an exchange that lasted about two seconds, Ned Stark ordered him to leave King's Landing with a hundred men and apprehend Gregor Clegane, whom the Lannisters had sent to raid Catelyn's homeland of The Riverlands after Cat had taken Tyrion hostage. Eventually Beric met Thoros of Myr, and they started the Brotherhood Without Banners. Probably not the first person to post this but figured I would just in case.
EDIT: I've read the books twice and watched the first four seasons countless times, up until the show starts getting into books that haven't been written yet 😂And I never put it together that Gilly's baby would've been Craster's 100th son. Good catch.
Extinguishing their opposition, seeking justice not just for themself but entire regions, establishing warranted respect, loyalty, and obedience amongst their army and council through words and actions, being strong willed and empathetic and acting on both, somewhat self-made… Danny is a compassionate leader who actually stands on business. That is top tier characterization for any other character doing a fourth of what she is rn.

Something that might not be stated in the show is that in Westeros at least, there's this tradition of hospitality, meaning when you accept someone under your roof both parts agree to trust and not harm each other, some even believe the gods punish those who break this trust.
Thats why Lord Commander Mormont was so against killing Craster, not because he liked him or anything, but because he offered roof and (some)food for the Night's Watch, thus both parts agreeing to this "law of hospitality".
Not even a tradition, it’s a straight up law. It’s called ‘The Guest Right’ if I invite you and feed you then I am not allowed to harm you in any way. It’s a law because it’s dishonorable to treat someone with kindness and bring them into your home only to betray them.
The scene with Daenerys killing the masters… chills. Every time.
Not going to lie, I love letters as a form of communication. There is something about a person taking their time out of their day to write to you, mail it, and wait to hear back. If the world goes south and we loose our phones and other electronics, we gone be right back to it. Ravens and everything😂😂

It's really funny comparing old letters to the written word today. Even letters pertaining to basic things back in the day look like poetry compared to the written word today. Technology is great but we have lost a bit of nuance in the way we communicate with each other.

Well the nights watch is sort of like a prison full of criminals (though it contains others as well like bastards, falsely accused ect) so it would take a lot of encouragement and giving them reasons to want UNITY for them to have it.
And ntm on handwritten letters. I remember when I was in bootcamp my high school boyfriend wrote me letters 3x a week 😂😂😂 it was the sweetest thing. Even after we broke up I kept those letters for years

I was mad about his hand getting cut off for sure. Not because he didn't deserve it, because he really did. But as a reader of the books and watcher of the show, I hear so many tidbits throughout the series of how amazing warriors Jamie is, Ned Stark was, Robert Baratheon and so on. Some parts that really pissed me off was the injuring of Ned Stark and the cutting of Jaimes hand off so we didn't get see the intense fight scenes from some of the most feared fighters in Westeros. So many tales of battle and glory from amazing fighters, and I would've loved to see more from the big gods in the realm.

I hit that exact same threshold with Theon, the moment those guys were about to go... cheek to cheek, I wanted him to get saved. Before that, i was watching with a grin on my face at him "finding out" after f***ing around. There's some similar (but different) building going on with Jaime, but it took a while for him to grow on me too. This show is really good at making some characters who were awful become much more sympathetic (grey morality but likeable, like Verys) and then contrasting that with others who just get worse (but in compelling ways) as the seasons go on.
Something yall might not have caught, previously Missandei made a comment to Dany while talking about the Unsullied army, at the end of which she says "Valar Morghulis"
And Dany responds, "Yes all men must die, but first they must serve" or something to that effect.
It illustrates that the language that the slave master was speaking, Valyrian, is something Dany understands.
It's a nod to the viewer that Dany has absolutely understood every insult during the entire negotiation.
She knew she was gonna toast old boy.

Jaime's current arc from the last episode is really interesting because it's based on the well known trope in media called "Break The Haughty" which is obviously about humbling or breaking down a haughty character who deserves what's coming to them, whereas Sansa's arc going through last season and now, is the trope called "Break The Cutie", which is the breaking down of a character who was otherwise just sweet, wholesome, and/or naive.
They're almost the same 'journey', because it's all about being viciously broken down through the narrative, but one character you root for to survive, and the other you cheer for when they get their beat down.
Sansa getting beaten on by Kingsguard? Absolutely not

You guys should read about how a few years ago they were digging up this old parking lot in England and found the remains of King Richard III ("A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!") Richard died in battle during the actual War of the Roses, which was the inspiration for Game of Thrones.

i get where y’all are coming from when you think the power might get to dany’s head. you’re seeing her get tougher so it’s understandable. but tbh she’s a ruler and she’s fighting for her rightful place on the throne. she’s tough where she needs to be and also kind where she needs to be. she had to be both (and she is) if she wants to rule. season 1 dany could never make it to the throne and the higher lords would’ve never respected her the way they’d respect her from now on (as she’s showing more strength, but again, she also has that kindness to her as well). honestly from outside, she’s doing much better than anyone who’s been on the throne from what we’ve seen in the show so far

The guy (Chet) that goes out looking for Sam at Craster's hates Sam. He was Maester Aemon's steward until Sam came. John talked to Aemon about giving Sam the job because of how smart he was. Chet couldn't even read. Chet loved the job because it was easy. So Sam became Maester Aemon's steward, and Chet was sent to the kennels with the dogs.
